The American premiere recording is for me the best. Its complete and Glenn Close is brilliant. The OLC has the best Jo (a role weirdly often overlooked) but Patti i find almost unlistenable. The Canadian recording has the worst Joe and the radio concert recording with Petula Clark, Michael Ball and Emma Williams is dire (Emma is a great Betty but Michael Ball and Petula are awful) In what sense is Patti unlistenable? I know that to each his own, but I'm struggling to understand how someone could objectively say LuPone is unlistenable. The woman is one of the finest vocalists of her generation of MT performers. I actually like the Canadian recording a lot. I never liked it in the '90s, but its Joe and Betty are great singers. There needs to be a mention to the German cast recording with the divine Helen Schneider. She was a beautiful Norma.

Petula was far from the worst. You obviously didnt see Rita Moreno in the part. Smaller than Elaine Paige and not a great singer either. No, Moreno was off the day I went and we had Jill Martin who was rather good too!

A Solid Norma, who had vocal power when it mattered. You just couldn't shake the feeling that she was 'doing an impression of people acting Norma' rather than acting it herself. Her voice goes from Marilyn to Bassey and back again. I really enjoyed that production though; even the budget staircase.

I also saw her multiple times, but luckily I also saw LuPone, Buckley and Paige multiple times, so I can remember those while trying to forget Clark If she was that bad , how come you saw her multiple times? I have seen several other actresses playing the part. I guess what you think of others performances is very subjective so we will agree to disagree!!

Will be interested to see how this shapes up. It is on In Birmingham later in the year and am still undecided as to whether to go. Seeing Danny mac is an incentive however!

Because it's my favourite show and Clark was in it for a while, so I wasn't going to avoid it entirely just because of her. Certainly didn't see it as regularly as before her though.

She died recently, sadly.
I saw Moreno - the only time I saw the original production in the stalls!
I don't remember that much about her performance. I think I was more enthralled with the show as a whole.

I know. Terribly shallow, but gawping at Mr Mac is definitely an incentive.

I have bootleg recordings of most of the major productions/actresses to don the turban.
I don't have much time for LuPone's performance - very much an acquired taste. I do love the way she sings the two big arias though - especially with the original key of With One Look.
My bootlegs of Elaine Paige and both Alex Hanson and John Barrowman, then Kathryn Evans with Dave Willets will always remain my overall favourites to listen to, with the ENO production coming very close (mainly for Glenn's acting, the orchestra and Siobhan Dillon)

Joe did not strip down to swimming trunks in the original production. This was only done in the Coliseum production. We will see if it happens in this incarnation.....
