It’s had a couple of revivals fairly recently though. It had a 2013-14 tour and a separate production a couple of years later in Regent’s Park. I think if modern audiences were to have a problem with this show it might be more to do with the “let’s kidnap some women and make them fall in love with us and do all our chores” plot rather than a lack of any inclusion.

It has been out on tour in the past decade and it is creaky at best. There are a couple of decent tunes and some good dance opportunities. But the plot is just not workable.

I enjoyed this a few year back at the Open Air. I remember it was light and humourous - who knew Stockholm syndrome the musical could do this?

This repeated use of 'woke' is tiresome. Many of us totally agree! But with the current zeitgeist to put a warning before Disney films and the current narrative is to rewrite history and frown on anything that is not inclusive, seemingly misogynistic and a quest to include only left wing mantra into current shows - this causes great issues with old classic musicals. Sometimes this is a wonderful thing BTW, sometimes not. When it comes to producing old classics - this does not fall into the cultural mindset of many creatives today. Unless they can readapt them - these shows will be seen in a negative light sadly. I sadly see a day when The King and I, Kiss me Kate and others will no longer be performed. |

Mainly not to do with racism but politically correct culture gone mad such as naming snowmen snow-people etc. It is not a racial narrative but about the modern day changing (pros/cons/common sense) v social justice of many areas of society. No idea why anyone would want to revive this anyway.
It exists on film for those that like it, but thankfully the world has moved on and I just don’t think this show is acceptable as it is to modern audiences.
Also, it’s a really bad musical.

It's so interesting to read this discussion - so many of the classic musicals are now horribly problematic. I'm fascinated to see what the Open Air Theatre will do with 'Carousel' this summer, fingers crossed it goes ahead.

On a related note, we've been sorting out our loft including our theatre programmes and we have two spare for the Regent's Park production if anyone would like them. Would just need to cover postage. For what it's worth we all enjoyed the production and felt it really suited the setting. ** Sam advises that the programmes have now gone. Burly. |
