The Station of the Nation is going on Vacation and doing a whole Musical Theatre Weekend. Culminating in Elaine Paige’s countdown to the greatest musical theatre song.
However as this is huge content, we cannot possible listen to it all, so awesome we have BBC Sounds App to catch up. So if anyone is listening and catch something worth posting, post it, include the show and the time would be useful, so I can catch up.

Listening to this on and off today. Have so far heard two versions of One Day More and it struck me how much Les Mis has changed between the original cast recording (gorgeous) and the 2020 concert cast (twice as fast and very shouty!) They do seem to be playing a good range of showtunes. Looking at comments on social media there's a lot of regular listeners moaning about the takeover but loads more praising it!

Listened to Sheridan Smiths podcast today where she is talking to Amanda Holden. A few nice showtunes as well. Sheridan tells a very funny story about when she was cast as Annie as a kid and went to an audition with a clowns wig her mother had bought and sprayed it orange with car sprsy paint.

The concert on Sunday has a great line up of performances. Only disappointment is that no one from Come From Away will be performing.

Purposely not read the post above as I'm only up to No 13 on catch up. But the programme is actually making me feel quite sad. Hearing all these grest songs from shows I have seen and wondering if I will ever see them sung on the stage again. I know theatre will reopen but I just hope I am alive and fit enough to actually go. I ain't getting no younger. This wasn't helped by using public transport today for the first time in ages and nothing has changed. Still the same group of people not wearing face masks or caring. And I am pointing the finger at young Eastern Europeans who are the main culprits where I live in East London. Anyway back to musicals, really looking forward to the Palladium concert tonight on Radio 2.

Listened to both Michael Ball and Elaine Paige today for the first time.
Quite an ecclectic mix of songs. Great to hear West Side Story. I thought that Gethsemane was an interesting choice.
Two songs from Hamilton.
Good to hear a song from Dear Evan Hansen and Wicked
Disappointing that Seasons of Love was at Number 20.
No songs from with Jason Robert Brown or Rogers & Hammerstein.

I'm Here and What I Did For Love should have replaced the DEH and Hairspray entries in the top 20, but otherwise given the original list I can't hugely complain about that result, though I would have switched the order of several. The top spot is correct though as far as I'm concerned.
Pleasantly surprised to see two WSS songs in it, and JCS.

Although we know his work I don't think the average Radio 2 listener would know who Jason Robert Brown is. Even in MT he is a little bit niche.

Disappointing that Seasons of Love was at Number 20. [ Whilst it is indeed disappointing, it galls me that this is the song that represents ‘Rent’ so often when there are at least fifteen better songs.

None that are anywhere close to as well-known though. Also unsurprising given it is a hugely uplifting song and the one casts frequently performed in promoting the show.

I guess it worked best ‘out of context’ when they were trying to sell the show and doesn’t sound like its about gays, drug addicts and the disenfranchised struggling with rubbish life and hiv.

We had an enjoyable couple of hours listening to this countdown. Pleased to see One Day More at number one (my personal vote), I was surprised that Les Mis also secured the second place too. Shame Gethsemane wasn’t higher, the Steve Balsamo version is one of my all time favourites.

Yes it was a good show. It would be interesting to see how the panel arrived at their original 50 songs (Nothing from Phantom for example). Glad Les Mis won though.

There is no good way of doing a survey for the ‘best’, this came across as a lot of young voters voting when I see Rent, Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen in the mix then a massive curveball was thrown at me with Porgy and Bess, I wasn’t expected that.
Defying Gravity I wouldn’t even say is the best song from Wicked, I would say more For Good is better.
Interesting 1&2 are from Les Miserables the greatest musical ever composed. I would have Bring Him Home as number one, it was the one I voted for. However One Day More is a brilliant song and brings in the whole company and is the best act 1 closer in any musical. If we believed the critics who done their best to tell us how awful Les Miserable was ‘The Glums’ & ‘Turning a Mountain of a Book into a Molehill of a Musical’ if we took the critics on face value the top 1 & 2 would be completely different, maybe Defying Gravity would be number 1, alas the barricades won beat the broomstick.

The critics also slated Wicked when it first opened on Broadway. So taking them at face value would have removed Defying Gravity too. I don't think The Greatest Showman (number 4 with This Is Me) was very well received by the critics either.

I was also surprised at Phantom being left out. Might have been better to limit the long list to one song per musical, as there was a few with 2 in the list.

As with most of these things, its usually the 'Well known and crowd pleasing' songs that make the list, but of course, even that is subjective. Neither of the Hamilton songs would have been in my top 50, let alone top 20, but Wait For It,would have been. Surprised And I AmTelling You wasnt on the lists.
I did notice that she played alot of the soundtrack versions, eg Hairspray and Lion King, but made sure it was her versions of Evita and Cats. Keeping her eye on the royalties!
I also really enjoyed The Sounds of The 80s and 90s, even if Jennifer Holidays presenting style seemed very affected.

Also AlfieBoe’s version of BHH rather than the John Owen Jones one! JOJ may have been a bit miffed. He posted a link to his version plus a link to the 2010 version of One Day More. Accompanied by lots of endorsements on Twitter.
