I watched this last night and enjoyed it immensely. Excellently written and performed (and sung!) and really drew you into the developing relationship between the two characters.
The streaming quality was very good. Just a slight hitch at the beginning where Danny Sapani's microphone was not faded up. The only slight irritation was the overuse of side view camera angles. I like to sit in the good central seats, not the cheaper side seats!

Lovely. Perhaps not the most brilliant text but it's a beautiful opportunity for two actors at the top of their game and the post-show q-and-a tonight was as moving as the play itself. Well worth catching before it ends on sunday at 5 pm.

Lots of positive points to this play. Fantastic acting, largely a great script, and the emotional heft translated well on the screen (even if it certainly would have been more powerful in person). It reminded me in some of the ideas and tone of Death of a Salesman. I also thought the integration of music worked really nicely.
If there’s one downside for me, it was that a key narrative beat, that shifts the story completely, felt a little off. I’m not suggesting that this doesn’t happen in real life, but it just felt too unusual/convenient in a play that otherwise feels very real and (in the best way) mundane.
All in all though, a fab piece and well worth the time and money. Four stars and can’t wait til see what the almeida puts on next.

Yes, another positive vote for this. The story took a bit of a backseat for me to the two performances, which were terrific and would have been absolutely electric in person. Nicely choreographed with only a couple of clunky moments where the social distancing was noticeable. Amongst the best streaming theatre I've seen.

I sat transfixed by this. Maybe it was because it's the first play I've had to sit down at the ordained time to watch live in over a year, but both Lester and Sapani were magnificent. The plot is paltry, but it doesn't matter when the main thrust comes from the two characters interacting. By the time it got to the bonding scene with the costumes and music, I was grinning from ear to ear, they manage to capture such a joyful spirit onstage. I didn't even notice the social distancing until one key scene at the end where, in any other play, a hug or at least some form of physical touch would have occurred.

Wonderful, a real tonic - almost got up and danced. Two great actors in their prime. Go and see this, not the disappointing Bach and Sons.

It's funny you mention "Bach and Sons," because there are some plot similarities, in that both plays are about father-son and sibling type relationships, but it's the sharp micro-focused humans-relating parts of this that really set the stage on fire, rather than the macro epic-history scope of that play. I saw today's matinée, and while some of the bits recounting back story weren't as dynamic for me, as the parts where the two characters were just relating, the whole show is a really wonderful, exciting and meaningful theatrical experience. And the musical parts are instant theatrical highlights of 2021! Danny Sapani and Adrian Lester really couldn't be bettered in their respective roles, and I found myself both very moved AND wanting to dance. Being alive, really. 4 and a half stars from me. Highly highly recommended! (I'm glad my Sky Digibox packed up and I lost my recording of this, which led me to booking a live ticket lol). |

Lovely afternoon back at the Almeida. Adrian Lester and Danny Sapani are both fantastic. The chemistry between them is superb and I would have happily watched another 90 minutes.
Within a couple of minutes of the play ending, both actors were out in the lobby and chatting away (masked, as they were entering and exiting through the sales) with people as they left. Most comments seemed to be amazement they were doing it all again in just a few hours time.
