Anyone know where I can download any of Tom Jones’ versions of the songs from ‘Matador’? They don’t appear to be on Itunes or spotify. I have the cd somewhere but would rather just download it.

I found Barrowman doing ‘A Boy From Nowhere’ on something but it’s the other two that I like better, especially ‘I’ll Dress You In Mourning’.

I was just reminiscing with a pal about El Piano bar in Sitges and the array of MT posters they have (had? I don’t know if the bar has survived Covid). The two posters that always struck me in my drunken fug (it was bear week.. get over it) were the classic Wicked “whisper” poster that we all know and love but also this one..  What was Matador all about? How was Barrowman? Did you see it? Is it connected with the Pedro Almodovar film? Why hasn’t it been revived? |

It was about a poor boy who became rich and famous due to becoming a successful Matador (and playboy) in the 1950s/60s and was based loosely on the autobiography of a man named El Cordobes (sp?). I saw it and thought it was pretty good. Barrowman was, as I recall, great vocally and decent acting-wise. One thing I recall was that the bull was played by several male Spanish flamenco dancers dressed in black - really effective! |

I loved Matador and the poster is great in it's simplicity, but yet conveys a lot. I had it on my wall for years. I wish I still had it. Will write more about the show tomorrow. it's late!

I saw Matador 3 times in it's brief run at The Queens theatre. I thought it was excellent, but then i loved everything i saw back then. The show is told in flashback form, about 'The Boy From Nowhere' who goes on to be a legendary bull fighter. It was reported at the time that Tom Jones, who had had a hit single from the show wanted the lead role, but producers thought he was too old for the role. John Barrowman was excellent in the role, full of passion and fight and sang the score beautifully. Caroline O'Connor played his sister and got to sing the wonderful 'I'll Dress You In Mourning' and Mrs Hart herself, Stephanie Powers played an American film star who didn't appear till the second half. Surprisingly she had a nice voice, but the role really could have been played by anyone. The choreography was a big part of the show and the bull was played as a group of male dancers, all in black, doing a mix of dance styles like flamenco and paso, it was surprisingly effective. I seem to remember the 2nd half tried to make the Matador some kind of allegory about living under the Franco regime but it wasn't entirely clear and not really needed IMO. There was cast recording planned, but cancelled the day before recording was booked. I think there is a great show in there that definitely deserves a revisal of some kind and would love to see Ricardo Afonso in the lead. I had a soundboard recording from the show, but it was on a laptop that died on me and can't be retrieved. So if anyone has it, i'd love a copy again! There is a bootleg video of the show, on that well known video platform, although the quality isn't the best, it gives a great overview of what the show was like.
And John Barrowman had his first real love affair with one of the dancers, Paco!

Seeing that poster made me look up Elijah Moshinsky who I had not heard about for years - he was mostly an opera director but he did quite a bit of TV work and some theatre productions - I remember his "Much Ado" with Alan Bates and Felicity Kendal. He also directed the RSC Richard III with Robert Lindsay. Sadly I read he died around a year ago after contracting Covid while in hospital for a fracture.
Just by the way, that production of "Much Ado" features in Peter Sallis' autobiography "Fading Into The Limelight" which does his reputation no favours at all. On the back of his TV sitcom fame he was cast as Dogberry which is the leading comic part in the play. No sooner is he on board than he goes and asks if he can play Verges instead - a supporting role of 18 lines. A pay cut does not appear to form part of his request. They tell him to take a hike and he moans on about it and how he was miscast which, having seen his performance, I can confirm.
