Fair enough. I've never seen a production of it I've really, really liked, though my favourite was probably Jude Law's at the Young Vic. There was some great staging in that (Annette Badland played the pope) and Law really shone in a couple of the speeches. The worst was Barry Kyle's RSC production many years ago with Gerard Murphy. There was one great image of David Bradley as Mephistopheles, screaming, in a loin cloth (at least that's my memory - I hope I haven't confused it with an after show party) but the rest was truly painful. I only paid £15 for my tickets for this one, so I'm hoping I like it enough for that - judging from the production photos I've seen and Steve's critique it might work for me on a visual level so if I treat it like an art installation rather than a proper play I shouldn't be too sad? (I'm trying to cheer myself up about having booked for this. Overall I've had a great 2016 in terms of theatre-going, but I may be descending a slippery slope now. )

How does a theatre flood - from what. I was over the road at Sunset and happily we were nice and dry, but have the duke of York's got a leaky roof or something?

Could easily be a plumbing problem - burst pipe or blocked drain.

I was also hit by the flood cancellation which came too late to see anything else in the West End because everything else (except some of the longrunning dross) also starts at 14:30.

That is annoying as hell, when informed late.
Well this is getting a good kicking in the press, Georgina Brown in today's Mail on Sunday awarded this 1 star, it has got atrocious reviews and several 2 stars or below, Jamie Parker must be a shoe in for the best overrated director, his honeymoon period is done. I am in 2 minds about seeing this and could easily swerve, I don't want to pay a lot of money for this and ATG are asking £35 for a day ticket.

1 star in the Sunday Times too - 'an unutterable mess' according to Christopher Hart. He is one of the less forgiving critics, but I can't remember the last time he gave a single star to a major West End opening. This show can surely only survive on the patronage of Game of Thrones/Harington groupies - are there enough of them to make this critic-proof?

How is it that Admin are happy to ban some of the chats on here like rumours but are not happy to ban the likes of trolling that continue to happen and have done since last year?
Also, whatever happened to all bodies are beautiful? Just saying.

It's just the show was SO ugly That it made everyone in it seem so too Have you see it? It is worth it in order to put theatre into perspective They have red lighting in the foyer And pop music playing in the theatre Awful songs I thought you were and Angel You were the devil This sort of thing It is not going to attract new audiences Just gullible young people who will get their parents to pay for them Do you think in 20 years time THEY in turn will pay £90 for their own children to see this kind of waste? |

I haven't seen it, due to Saturday's biblical event, but Kit Harington obviously has drawn many people, including "new audiences", to the show and this must have broadened many people's range of theatre experience, even if the show hasn't appealed to everyone who has seen it. In twenty years it will be someone and something very different which will be of popular interest and people then will flock to that. Surely we can all look back at our past experiences and shudder or chuckle at what then seemed attractive. |

In principle I agree with your sentiment But we all know the reality They have used a moderately attractive young man with average acting skills to lure an audience to a pile of rubbish The method and means don't justify it It's like trying to use a boy band to hand out drugs And then validate it If it takes this sort of desperation to attract a "new" audience I would rather they stayed at home and didn't go to the theatre at all Furthermore the actor in question and the "director" have( one could argue) a responsibility to offer theatre of the highest quality The girls sitting next to me didn't even understand any of the dialogue in the first act How is that likely to make them go to the theatre again for its intrinsic essence as an art unless the next flavour of the month is appearing in it? - they are better off saving to see Beyonce or Rhianna They at least have a message which resonates with young people and captures their love and imagination If you want true engagement with new audiences see what Almeida are doing with Boy This is meaningful and worthy All I know is that I would not have been impressed with this when I was a teenager And none of my friends with children would take them to such lowly rubbish A parent who thinks this show is suitable for young adults needs to question their taste in art as well as their moral fabric And these same children should not be watching Game Of Thrones either |

Susannah Clapp says in her one-star review that Kit Harington "suggest(s) undoubted acting talent" although she's frustrated that the production only gives him a brief spell to show it. The critics had to see this as part of their job and Parsley saw it for personal West End-completist reasons, and I guess that none of them truly wanted to be there or expected to appreciate it highly. More important are the views of the genuine audiences attracted to this show. If they keep coming through the run, then the show will have succeeded, and we can look forward to more such events to follow. At the very least, this provides a serious dramatic West End alternative to Judi Dench round the corner. I welcome Doctor Faustus (in principle) and groan at The Winter's Tale (also in principle) but there should be space for both.

Please sister See it and report back Sometimes we need to advise people though Many patients come to see me and tell me they eat 10 doughnuts and they like them And I tell them they are tasty I agree But that they have given them diabetes And therefore they need to reassess the situation based on my advice After you see it I doubt you will use the terms "serious" or "dramatic" with respect to the show |
