Love SFANW. I was listening to it just yesterday. So many great songs, Stars and The Moon being my favourite.

I was really hoping that when we all come out of lockdown this bloody show wouldn't exist anymore.
And I really don't to hear Stars and the bloody Moon sung ever again at a cabaret, recital, piano bar or audition.

I am reminded of the production of Songs For A New World I saw in about the year 2001 at the late lamented Bridewell Theatre in London which had an excellent cast of Golda Rosheuvel, Craig Purnell, Sarah Redmond and Nigel Richards. The cast were very professional and gave it their all despite the fact that there could not have been more than about 10 of us in the audience.

You caused me to do a bit of googling and although it did announce its closure at that time, I had not realised that this was the Bridewell Theatre Company closing and that the building itself has remained open as a functioning theatre. So my lamentations must be restricted to that theatre company who I remember putting on some good productions. I am glad to learn the building is still in use as a theatre - or at least it was until this wretched pestilence arrived. |

I worked on a production of this show a few years ago with a cast including Cynthia Erivo and Jenna Russell. It was a great experience.

Did anyone else watch this over the last few days?
I thought it was truly excellent, and I think I actually enjoyed it more than the St James production from a few years ago! This and ‘The Last Five Years’ are two shows that work incredibly well in isolatio!
I found the whole thing incredibly moving. I had tears in my eyes from the Opening, and got quite emotional again during ‘Hear My Song’. The show just seemed to take on a new meaning in the context of the current circumstances, making it seem so vital and fresh. I loved the use of news footage throughout. The score is a marvel, and that was brought to the fore here.
More live-streams like this please! I have been racking my brains to see what other shows could work in this isolated way.

Yes, I loved it, too - especially all the creativity that had gone into staging it at the performers' homes and yet mixed together so well. And the finale, when they showed the closed theatres again, made me cry.
I don't think many shows could work like this though as it's more a song cycle and not a real musical where characters interact all the time. Maybe Larson's "Tick, Tick, Boom" ?

I also really enjoyed this, I'm surprised there's not been more of a reaction given its one of the few new things we've been able to watch for months! I thought the way they recorded it and sang 'live' (rather than pre recording the vocals then being filmed lipsynching) and the very raw way it was filmed made it seem less like a film and more like 'theatre', along with the streams being at a set time. I'm not sure if I'm explaining what I mean very well, but the joy of seeing sort-of live singing from theatre folk after all this time was lovely and I felt a bit emotional. My attention waned a bit in some songs, but Cedric Neal I've never seen before and he sang amazingly. If he had an album I'd buy it. The rest were in great voice too.
I think there are more productions that could work this way, Assassins springs to mind, also Tomorrow Morning or perhaps Tell Me On A Sunday or Ordinary Days.
