I thought Rosalind Russell was great as Mama Rose. I don’t care that she didn’t sing all of it. I think it was better for it 😱.
Barbra Streisand should never have been cast in Hello Dolly and she was terrible in it.😖
Kinky Boots should never have been made into a musical. 🤫
Michael Crawford had a lucky break in POTO, and his performance wouldn’t stand up to scrutiny today.😷
Book Of Mormon would not make it past the workshop stage today. And even if it did, no producer would touch it. 👹
Sarah Harding wasnt as bad as people said in Ghost. 👻
Over to you...

I can't bear Alfie Boe and think he's very overrated.

Bernadette Peters has the acting range of a three-speed blender, and the blender might be a better singer.

The recent revival of Company was vastly overrated

Hardly new ones from me, but, since you did ask.
Glenn in Sunset. No amount of acting can compensate for such a mediocre singing voice.
Hamilton whilst no doubt clever and fresh is insanely overrated.
She Used To Be Mine aside, the scores of Waitress, Come from Away and Dear Evan Hansen are a total yawn fest.
Rent Remixed was not that bad and DVO marching on in the very last second of Act 1 was iconic.

Stop making Imelda Staunton the premier Sondheim interpreter of the UK. All she does is bark. That Sweeney Todd revival was boring. I wanted it to load out and get The Bodyguard in. Stop making Sheridan Smith a musical theatre icon. Zero. Talent. Come From Away is pedestrian and basic AF. Pretty Woman looks and sounded like trash but I do listen to I Can't Go Back all the time. Joe Iconis should stop composing. I really like Lin Manuel Miranda as a creative mind, but I wish he'd stop being everywhere and most of all I wish he'd stop singing. Casey Nicholaw and Jack O'Brien are awful directors. Lawrence O'Connor is overused and over-employed. Why him? A Jerry Mithcell show is starting to look like a parody of a Jerry Mitchell show. Retire, queen. Kinky Boots has an awful book but a good score. British drag queens don't sound and sass like that.
I've said my peace.

Yeah this is just the unpopular opinion thread for Covid generation. Quick hide from the mods before they close it down.........oh no wait...... Unpopular opinions thread: covers everything, theatre and non theatre. This thread: very specifically about musicals, for people who wish to read/talk about musicals and not necessarily all unpopular opinions. Participation is, as always, entirely voluntary 🙂

Sondheim is overrated.
The Menier Chocolate Factory’s churning out of revivals (some of which have been stinkers) has become increasingly tedious. Try producing some new work for a change which don’t feature the same performers over and over again.
Sunny Afternoon only stood up due to the Kinks songs, the book and direction were dire. It certainly did not deserve all the hype and awards heaped upon it and if it hadn’t had all the might of SFP productions behind it, it would never have made it past the Hampstead Theatre run. I still have acid flashbacks of virtually being dragged out of my chair to dance during the finale. I stayed clamped to my chair despite that.
Any shows where the audience are expected to get up and dance in the finale are the enemy of the people. I pay to watch a show, not to be in it.
Spongebob Squarepants - The Musical was shockingly robbed of the Best Musical Tony Award by The Band’s Visit.
Next to Normal is right up there with the best contemporary musicals of all time. Such a shame it hasn’t come here, but possibly just as well if rumours that Jenna Russell (always the same, dead behind the eyes performance) would be cast as Diana are true.
The massive success of Dear Evan Hansen is an enormous case of Emperor’s New Clothes ( including the mediocre paint by numbers music of Pasek & Paul).
American Psycho was hugely underrated both here and on Broadway. Great shame that it didn’t transfer after the Almeida run.
Spring Awakening was let down badly by the book..
Women on The Verge of A Nervous Breakdown was let down by the director and lead actress. Hopefully Tamsin Greig will give musicals a wide berth in the future.
Grey Gardens was an atrocity and did the original documentary a massive disservice.
Heathers deserved a West End Run.
The dialect coach for the recent production of Fiddler on the Roof should re-train ( unless the conceit was to have all the characters representing different countries across the Globe).

The Company revival wasn’t good at all. Too pleased with itself and Rosalie a Craig was weak.
Follies at the National was a disappointment. Badly directed and choreographed. A collection of OTT performances.
Jenna Russell needs to stop being cast in roles that require actual singing. Hope to god she’s replaced when they eventually do Dolly.
Alfie Boe is the worst ‘actor’ to ever step on a west end stage. He must be stopped.
Hamilton is overrated. Act 1 is great, Act 2 a snoozefest.

Movie-musicals are almost always awful and need to stop cluttering up the West End DEH soundtrack was dull and I remained unmoved The Les Mis film was great

Agree about Follies. It left me cold, despite looking great. Hated the Sally character and I thought imelda was totally wrong for it.

Hamilton is almost completely indecipherable - rapping in a fake French accent? And you expect me to be able to hear the words at the back of that huge theatre because they were the only (still hugely overpriced) seats I could afford?
When people say 'I can't stand musicals' they're talking about Sondheim. And I agree!
Patti Lupone. Just no.

Musicals should have a term limit placed on their West End run of 5 years. Once they have closed, no matter how much Cam Mac reworks them, they are then not allowed back in the West End for another 5 years. Don't care if it closes on opening night or after the 5 years thats it - gone for another half decade.
A maximum of one "jukebox" musical allowed in the West End at any one time.
Comedy sidekick characters all to be rounded up and fired into the sun.
Sometimes when it comes to orchestrations, less is more (I'm looking at you Matilda).
And anyone in the audience who is singing along be fed to the under stage crocodiles during the interval, no exceptions.
