Poor ENO. They've taken quite a beating for this already; and it sounds like the matter is out of their hands.

Yes, it has nothing to do with ENO at all. It is a completely independent production company. Does anyone know what is the matter with GC? She really must be ill and not just "vocal fatigue" to be off for 5 days at least? I wonder if there does come a point where GC just does not return to the role at all?
Continued good luck to Ria Jones for tonight - the opportunity of a lifetime.

She's got the flu apparently, so I can understand her being off for a few days, but I did think she might be back tonight. But instead another lucky audience will be fortunate enough to see Ria, which is no bad thing. There are tickets left for most performances, I had no trouble getting one last week before I even knew Ms Close was out.

At least they've announced it earlier today.

Well damn, that was a quick turnaround. Do you think the producers have finally put their foot down?!

Sadly, it must mean GC symptoms are more serious than anticipated let's hope she makes a full recovery to grace the boards again before the end of the run.

I am going this week, I hope to God that Glenn is on or, and people can judge all they want, I will be majorly disappointed.

Lots of excited Tweets earlier from people thrilled (or planning special trip) to see Ria. Hope they don't demand their money back. The drama around this show...!

This is just daft now. I hope Glenn is well enough to complete the run. This will be disastrous if she manages tonight (maybe tomorrow) and then we have the whole thing again!

I would! ;-) Seriously though I have been close to booking a train ticket twice to see her, the timings just don't quite work (I'd get to Waterloo at 19:10)

They'll be absolutely screwed if some people decided not to attend when they heard Glenn was off, and now she's on, and they can't make it in time.

If I'd booked to see Ria tonight I'd be having words with the ENO (though I'd still go obviously, and not be demanding a refund, just telling them they've handled it all badly) - it's extremely poor form to announce that she would be on then go back on it!

A friend called in to the Coliseum at 2.30pm to get a ticket on the basis that Ria would be on... not hugely thrilled at the later about turn!

A friend called in to the Coliseum at 2.30pm to get a ticket on the basis that Ria would be on... not hugely thrilled at the later about turn! I think your friend has a much stronger case for complaining here than anyone who booked weeks ago expecting to see Glenn. I would be claiming misrepresentation at this stage. They have been induced into buying a ticket because Ria was meant to be on. Presumably if she went off sick, the whole show would have to be cancelled and a refund given. So anyone who bought a ticket to see Ria could legitimately claim they expected to see her or nobody. If you have been informed on the day that a particular performer will be doing a particular performance, you really should expect that they will be on (barring something unexpected e.g. illness - rather than a miraculous recovery of another performer!). This is presumably why west end shows don't normally put the cast board up until closer to the performance.

As I missed her on Saturday night, I have just forked out £165 for a train and ticket to Saturday matinee.
Please be well Glenn!

I'm inclined to agree... notices up at the venue and Box Office even pointed out to her that it was Ria who would be on, a mere 36 minutes before they tweeted the miraculous* return. *sounds more sarcastic than intended, but only marginally.

It reminds me of Noises Off! Ladies and Gentlemen the show will commence in 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 2 minutes!
It does seem a bit of a shambles. How is GC not well enough to perform at 2.00pm and then OK at 4.00pm? She must have a doctor called Lazarus!
I can never remember an occasion ever before when an understudy announcement has been revoked.
If they weren't sure about her performing at 2.00pm why not make an announcement later in the day (around 5.00pm) as they did last week?
