I imagine it's damage limitation. Have the Thursday night off in the hope that she is able to do the remaining three shows of the week. I guess weekends will be when most people are travelling from afar and have hotels reserved etc. Can't help feeling a teeny bit smug that I booked for the start of the run. However sad for her, for the people who will be disappointed, and Miss Jones for performing in less than ideal circumstances. On the other hand I'm pleased she is getting to perform.

Unsubstantiated of course, but saw a guy on Twitter complaining that he'd flown over from Singapore to see Ms Close! #awkward
If only Glenn Close ran her own Twitter account like Sheridan Smith, she'd probably reimburse him his air fare!

The thing is, people are paying for glenn close. Tickets would not be so expensive if this didn't have a big star in the lead. To not even offer exchanges is really unfair.
I do think with ticket prices the way they are,when producers are clearly happy to sell their production on a big star name in such an obvious way there should be some regulation in place to protect the ticket buying public. It comes across as very sneaky when you sell sell sell on a star name, then sneak away saying 'you pay for the show' when that star can't perform
It would also protect theatre staff from dealing with the fallout and vague rules

Honestly, if I'd fly in all the way from Singapore, I'd stay a few days, so "just in case" I could see it another day. Would be surprised if he didn't.

The producers are also to blame for this for having such a long run,and no alternate. Anyone could see this would probably happen with someone of Glenn close age in a role like this. It should have been a shorter run like sweeney or she should have had an alternate. Yes they'd probably have to cost the alternate shows differently but it would protect everyone involved.

I have only just heard that she is out tonight and the understudy is on. I'm not gonna lie, I would be gutted if this was my only chance to see the show and Glenn wasn't on. I usually don't care about it being an understudy or anything, but this show is being marketed as The Glenn Show, for a very limited run. All the reviews mainly speak about her and not much else. I am so glad I am seeing it at the end of the run and not tonight. I can understand she may be ill and needs rest etc... but I would be truly gutted.

Let hope the front of house have a protection detail things might get pretty hot with ticket collection tonight, but really they should have had the foresight for such an outcome considering GC's age & her absence from musical theatre for eons You could just as easily argue that the audience should have had the foresight to know that there was no guarantee. I'm certain there's not one single person in the audience who hasn't heard of understudies or who doesn't know that it's possible for people to be ill. They have every right to be disappointed, but every last one of them booked in the knowledge that this could happen. |

She may not have wanted an alternate. The producers are not obligated to refund or exchange any tickets. You paid for Sunset Boulevard. Benedict Cumberbatch had an understudy for Hamlet last year, and if he went off it would have been much the same.

I do think that if a show like this, where the star is so highly publisised, something should be done about exchanging or part-refunding... I would of said the same for the likes of Benedict, Sheridan, Imelda... these stars that come in and are so highly publisised and associated with the productions that it is near vital for them to be on or there is a backlash. Its all well and good saying you are paying to see Sunset Boulevard but truth be told, alot of people are paying to see Glenn.
IfI personally got her understudy, yes I wouldn't expect a refund and I would still watch the show but that is because I love theatre. I would still be gutted but I wouldn't kick up a fuss. Whereas alot of people aren't so kind. It seems the easiest way to solve it sould be to offer an alternate night at least, which in this case is not really possible as it is a very limited run.

Are there signed prints? I was told last night that they had sold out!!! Just been to ask, they have signed and framed prints, no unframed ones. The lady said they should be getting more again soon though. |

Granted it's only Thursday and I'm not due to go until Saturday but...I WILL be beyond truly gutted if she's not on. I booked to see Glenn, as splashed over every advertising feature/article available - just like Imelda in Gypsy although I accept the teenie tiny small print as a week get out clause. If travelling to London from Glos wasn't such a faff for me (dog sitting arrangements, travelling time, fuel and parking cost, etc) then I'd gladly go and see Ria BUT...if Glenn's not going to be on the I won't be going. But over and above all that, I really hope Glenn feels better soon and returns when she's happy to. |

According to some reports on Twitter people were just leaving the theatre when they found out it wasn't Glenn. Didn't even stay to see what RJ was like!  |

I nearly booked a train ticket when I saw ria was on, I'd have made it with minutes to spare. Then I realised I have bills (and it was only hinted on here, I'd seen no confirmation). I'd love to see another interpretation after seeing Ms Close twice (and loving her) with my only other time being the actor musician production so vastly different! I can see why people would be annoyed but it's live theatre

We know the legal aspect of this - you payed to see the show etc.etc.
BUT when the star is above the title there should be a facility to exchange the ticket if possible, as the show is marketed as Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard. It has to be compared with paying to see Madonna and not the understudy.
It is about the huge cost - we are not talking the usual £70 top price to see a fully staged musical but £100 - £150 to see a semi staged show! I can understand the guy "kicking off"!
However, I have to report that many people were picking their tickets up at the box office with a resigned shrug and "oh well ...let's go and have a drink before the show!" Plus several people were booking tickets especially to see Ria as they were friends who wanted to support her!
I felt very sorry for the duty box office manager who had a bad shift! There were plenty of security guys around in case anything got physical! He took the line (and held it) that it was not the ENO policy but the policy of the producers of this visiting production which the ENO had no control over and they could not exchange or refund.
I would have bought a cheap ticket (having seen Glenn the first week) to see Ria but unfortunately I had tickets to something else this evening.
