ENO website had a running time of 2 hours earlier in the week, now its saying 2 hours 30 minutes - I'm assuming there's an interval? Yes there is. Act 1 is 75 mins, act 2 is 50 mins and 20 min interval Cheers. |

It's the interval. Despite feeling a long way away Glenn is fantastic. Not sure of the staging or that dummy. Young Norma rather touching in both appearances so far.

Noticed tonight, that rather strangely, although the logo in the marketing of the show is a new "reproduction" of the original, the one that is projected on stage during the climax of the Act I car chase is the original logo.

This is my sixth Sunset. I think with Aspects it is ALW's greatest work but then I love the original film as well.
Dammit Glennis you made me cry in both your big numbers. That is A Star.
Fred was an excellent Max I thought. And although I still rate Joe by John Barrowman this one was on the money.

And you paid top whack for the front row? I always prefer to see things up close. At least then if I dislike it I know it was the show and not the seat! I liked the second act better. I just wasn't blown away. I would happily listen to Siobhan Dillon sing the phone book though. |

I was there tonight too. Up in the gods.
Didn't go with any particular expectations, as not a big Glenn Close fan, but have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish. With One Look was worth the ticket price alone. That woman is a class act.
Also thought Michael, Siobhan and Fred were excellent. Have come home really buzzing from this.

I too was there tonight with BurleyBeaR (such a nice guy BTW) and thought Glenn Close was riveting. I could not take my eyes off her!
It's late, I'm tired and I am in awe of the whole experience.
Sorry Alece10 that I didn't see you. I was in the foyer area near the bar both before the show and at intermission.
Will further expand on my thoughts tomorrow.
Needless to say I am speechless; I am completely without speech!

Im not going to regurgitate all the earlier comments. I'll just say she is worth the wait. She is The Greatest Star Of All.

anthony40 and BurleyBeaR sorry I missed you both, it was a bit of bun fight there as the theatre is so big and I am also rubbish at spotting people.
Have to say I agree with all the hype. That was an amazing night. Glen Close, what a star. I was in the dress circle, great view but I didn't realise how far you are away from the stage there, its such a massive theatre. It didn't really matter as her stage presence was so huge I didn't feel I missed anything. Great cast and Michael was excellent. He is on stage practically for the whole show. And that orchestra! Amazing.
I liked the staging and thought it was very effective. But poor old Norma up and down those stairs all night, I kept thinking that any minute she would trip on one of those lavish costumes and go a cropper.
I don't think I have ever heard such a long and loud ovation at the end of any show and 3 curtain calls for Ms Close.
After Gypsy this is best performance I think I have seen.

Glen Close was amazing at times. I could have stood after With one look and Goodbye but the rest of the time she played it a bit too much of it for laughs
MX was weigh out of his depth and was totally miscast. The rest of the casting failed to excite me
With last year’s Sweeney having the orchestra on stage was integral to the staging and made perfect sense but here it looked superfluous. The staging looked very cheap and nasty. Some poor directional choices – young Norma, the car, unrealistic dead body
I didn’t hate it but I would not recommend it
… this has to be Lewd Rubbers best work, some great tunes and then some shocking stuff – give me Sondheim , Kander and Ebb, Rogers and Hammerstein, Hamlisch, Menken …

If you deduct the cost of the two Toxic Avenger tickets that you won in our competition but WOULD have bought otherwise, and take off the cost of the mug, tote bag and programme you're NOT going to buy this afternoon then you probably only spent £25 on your ticket. Plus annoyingly my mother saw someone walking around with a Sunset tote this past week and dropped a less than subtle hint that I need to get her one. This and final Billy is resulting in a pricey day and I've not even arrived in London yet. |

Great show last night. Waited 20 years to see this and loved every minute.
Don't need to say much about GC, she is the best Norma without a doubt and as I expected less staging I was surprised by what I saw. Likely helped by being second row. I'm not sure I'd enjoy it as much at the back but being able to see expressions and close up of the staging makes a difference for me.

I was there last night - up in Row C of the Balcony. It played well up there too though there was an annoying safety bar a bit in the way and a persistent leaner so a little view blockage very downstage. However, Close's performance works at a distance too. Her reaction when the studio spotlight was put on her was really detailed and exciting and the moments when she'd go into her silent movie past....Like centaured above (welcome centaured!), it was more staged than I expected and that was a good thing. My theatre companion, who had been a bit dubious about it, loved it and said she couldn't imagine anyone else playing Norma.

In terms of staging I've seen less staging on fully staged productions (I'm looking at you, Book Of Mormon, cheap cheap CHEAP!) than I saw last night. There's a car on stage for gawd's sake!
I reckon this was described as such just to reset everyone's expectations around 'those sets'. For many of us who never saw the original production it wasn't an issue.
