It can’t be that spectacular if it’s moving venues every week. Very intrigued to hear reports though with further details! A standing ovation at a first preview is obligatory. Quite confused by your comment here. Why would moving venues every week stop something from being spectacular? Spectacular doesn’t equal complex, or expensive, or large. Spectacular can just as easily be accomplished in a way that’s simple and clever. And even if it *is* large scale spectacular, it’s no different really to shows like Wicked touring, and I’d argue there have been many spectacular touring productions in the past. Anyway, I’m very heartened by all the breadcrumbs of info and reports coming back from this show. I have a real nostalgic love for the movie, and it sounds like they’re approaching it just right. Looking forward to seeing and hearing more of it in the coming weeks.

The staging can’t be that complex if they move it every week that’s what I mean. Not saying it isn’t a brilliant show, with some wonderful magic in it, I very much hope it is and can’t wait to see it.

TBF shows like Wicked or The Lion King are much bigger in scale but also they run for longer than a week when they tour with longer get ins and get outs.

So say it like that in the first place rather than trying to sound deliberately unpleasant and superior. You have a wealth of impressive knowledge and experience which you devalue with the way you share it.

Sometimes less is a bit more, the touring set to Mary Poppins is far superior that the original West End/Broadway one.

Not been on this forum for so long but popped on to read people's thoughts of opening night. Alas nobody else from the board seems to have been there. This is the show I always wanted to be made into a musical and what they have produced is quite extraordinary. Perhaps, if anything, too ambitious as there is so much that can go wrong every night as the set is very elaborate for a touring production. There is loads going on onstage so I can only imagine what is going on off stage to keep it all moving. Literally. I won't post any spoilers but it really is the best touring production you will see this year and the leads are perfectly cast. Dianne Pilkington a sarcastic, sassy Eglantine and Charles Brunton a bumbling, excentric Professor are a dream pairing. The ensemble work their socks off from beginning to end and you would think there was double the cast there is the amount of roles and jobs they have to do throughout. The magic is wonderful. There is so much humour and heart. I absolutely adored it. Is it like Mary Poppins which was an amalgamation of the books and the film or just based on the film? If it did get a West End season, I wonder which theatre would be suitable as the tour venues are a mix of small and large. I’d love to see this in the Garrick. It just seems slightly dusty and quirky enough.

Warning - may contain some spoilers!
The audience reception on Saturday night was wonderful. Jamie Harrison (director) & Candice Edmunds (producer) were onstage before curtain up to give a speech to the audience about the journey so far, and to ask for their support for the cast who'd been working so hard. Huge round of applause and cheers, which continued through the evening after each number, and a massive ovation at the end.
It's a very imaginative staging with a relatively simple set with little to no automation - the cast bring on the various pieces of scenery and interact with them too. There was a lovely moment when Miss Price was taking the children up the stairs which brought an appreciative laugh from the audience.
Portobello Road was a nicely-staged ensemble number, and thankfully MUCH shorter than in the film!
The highlight for me was the act 2 opening under the sea for Bobbing Along and the dance competition. The costumes are beautiful, and the fish puppets work really well, especially the main one.
There's some fantastic puppetry on the island too with the bear, the bird and the king (especially the king), which is done Timon/Pumbaa/Zazu-style.
There is magic galore in all shapes, sizes and methods of delivery. Some beautiful use of "Filigree apogee pedigree perigee", and "Substitutiary locomotion" is fab, both on Browne's shoes and the contents of the museum.
As shady23 said, the cast is perfect, and I was amazed at the curtain call that it was such a small cast, it certainly seemed much bigger through the show. The orchestra sounds great too, and it's lovely to see a harp in a touring production! The new songs were lovely, and fit in nicely with the existing songs from the film.
Oh and the flying? Yes, it happens, and looks bloody marvellous. Seeing Miss Price hovering over the battle on her broomstick was a real goosebumps moment, and there is a very clever bit as the bed takes flight from London where it goes through an archway which then moves 360 degrees around the bed to fox the 'it's on wires' theorists ;-)
It's a lovely show and a great adaptation, and will hopefully run for a long time!

I can't tell you how happy I am to hear such positive comments on this. It's a film, and score, very dear to my heart and, while I'm not usually a fan of film musicals being expanded and staged (why mess with perfection?), in this instance the show seemed ideally suited to the kind of theatre I love best - where magic and poetry and genuine heart triumph over big budgets and glossy but soulless spectacle.
It sounds like they've created a winner and I can't wait to see it!!

The Disney website description does say UK Tour & London run - so hopefully this means a West End transfer at some point?

Is it weird that i've never seen the original film? It's not on TV half a much as Mary Poppins seems to be.

It's such a brilliant film. I think bobbing along was actually left over from Mary Poppins and ended up in Bedknobs. Angela gives one of her most charming performances and it's really lovely. Think I might even watch it tonight!

I haven’t seen it since I was a kid. The only bit I remember is the underwater scene. I’ll be seeing the show in October so I’ll enjoy being surprised.

I adored the film but I must say I've not seen it in many many years. I always thought though it would make a great stage musical and so I'm vert excited it's come to fruition. I will refrain from watching the film again so I'm coming into it more fresh when I see it in October and not comparing it too much.

I've only seen Bedknobs once as a child. It's not really repeated on the main channels unlike Mary Poppins.
In terms of a future London home, I think the Savoy would be good.
