What musicals would you like to see at the ENO, and which ones do you think they'll actually go for?
I think 2018 could be good for EVITA. It'll be 40 years (!) since it opened in the West End. It has an ENO link, in that ALW was apparently approached by the ENO to stage it when the concept album came out in 1976 - so there would be a good story there too. By then we will either have a female US president, or a US president who is all about the personality cult and hoopla of grand gestures - it may have a relevance the recent revivals didn't quite achieve.
If this happens I would beg that they recreate, (but soup up ensemble numbers) for the Harold Prince original staging. Get Lady Gaga to play it and film the stage production. That was an iconic classic staging in my view and should be captured.
Of Sondheim's I can see them doing FOLLIES - possibly next year. You can get lots of star names in who don't want to carry a whole evening but would love to appear. Ria Jones has said it's on her wish list of shows to appear in.
Those are my wishes / guesses.

I think Evita would be a good choice, the Vancouver Opera has just finished doing it with Ramin and Caroline Bowman so could be a possible transfer in the pipeline perhaps?

It's Carousel or 42nd street next year. Can't remember which.

Do ENO semi-staged productions work well? Would it be better if they stage a full on musical revival for a limited time instead?

As long as it is no Sondheim show, I'm okay with it.

I know someone like Glenn Close wouldn't do a 5 month stint but a full on revival of Sunet Boulevard would be amazing. I would prefer them to do say Evita with Nicole Scherzwinger for 5 months and have it as full on musical rather than 5 weeks with a huge orchestra on scene and just the basic set

I also don't think they'll do Evita with someone like Nicole as she's not exactly ENO material

Considering sunset apparently had external producers, I wonder how much money the eno actually saw out of sunset.
Sweeney, sunset and carousel I can see why an opera company would attempt, but 42nd street?!
I guess if they do 42nd street then Catherine zeta jones would be an obvious name for it

Put me down for Evita or Follies. I love both of those ideas.

Fully staged would be good at those prices. Like the suggestion of 42nd Street, but personal choice would be Mame.

...Jerry Springer - The Opera?
...Wishful thinking, but I'd love to see it revived.

Love Never Dies. That needs to be heard again, big orchestra, some decent (semi) staging. Might give it a whole new life...

A Little Night Music with Angela Lansbury as Mme Armfeldt.
Would be great to bring back Huge, sorry Hugh Jackman, to do something like Carousel.
Would love Evita but think that would be a great show for Regents Park.

A Little Night Music with Angela Lansbury as Mme Armfeldt. C'mon..... she's 90. And still performing and going strong. She played the role on Broadway not that long ago. Her performance of 'Liasons' at the Oliviers a few years back was sensational. She is pushed around in a wheelchair for her few scenes.

I heard 42 nd st. Fully staged. Once it's finished at the Chatalet it will ship over here
I would really love their My fair lady to come over as it looks stunning in the designs by Tim Hatley but I doubt Cam Mack will allow it :-(

She is pushed around in a wheelchair for her few scenes. And in Blithe Spirit she displayed an enviable amount of energy for a lady of her years. She'd be fantastic as Mme Arnfeldt.

I guess if they do 42nd street then Catherine zeta jones would be an obvious name for it The producers of Sunset also produced Sweeney Todd last year. It's part of a 5 year deal with the ENO. ENO don't risk anything but stand to make lots of money from the partnership. The article also states that they want to stage new work once an audience has been established. www.thestage.co.uk/news/2014/michael-grade-original-musicals-planned-part-eno-deal/

I'd love to see Follies at ENO, so that I can finally forget that trashy concert at Royal Albert. But please, hire a true director.
