Hasn't ALW got any more filmed shows he could put on? if he has why end the series now? As has been mentioned recently, I think that's due to it being Universal putting on their back-catalogue of ALW shows as opposed to ALW himself! I guess Universal must be all out now. I'd love to see his private collections of films - Aspects of Love in London... Whistle Down the Wind.. Sydmonton concerts - I'd be there ever Friday night. But I'm sure it's about contracts with the actors, musicians, etc. Would hope in a global pandemic we'd look for ways to keep at this to keep people connected, but...

I know it costs money but they REALLY should have filmed The Woman in White at Charing Cross - it’s the PERFECT production and cast of an average show. I can't tell you how disappointed that there was nothing recorded of this, especially a cast recording. I saw WIW on Broadway three times in its short-lived run and always loved the score. Was curios to hear how it was "altered" and definitely wanted to hear this cast as people raved about it. Real pity. We have Three recordings of By Jeeves and only one WIW (and Aspects for that matter)

The Woman in S (w) HITE as I always called it was a mess on the West End. I suppose mostly because of the set. I gave it 5/10 but the Charing Cross production was GLORIOUS. It was a better cast, easier story to follow, better (or little set), gorgeous lighting and a super 8/10.

Watching cats now. Not seen it since the new London what feels like a million years ago. It’s lit beautifully.
It’s perfect viewing for lockdown when we’re all at various stages of losing our minds.

I have such fondness for this filmed stage version. Yes it's beautifully filmed and lit. You can tell video effects/CG were just coming in. But I like how they plant elaine P and John mills in among the cast before their big moments, and isn't the scene between John mills and Susan jane tanner, from the original cast, tender. I wish it had been a complete recording though. Talking of the original poems, does anyone in the know, know if Lloyd Webber ever set Pirate Morgan to music. It seems to be the only poem not included. Sorry he lost his cat this week.

If there is one thing I've learnt from listening to experts on the wireless it's that antiques and collectables come, go and come again.

Not enough to drag a bear to a Jellical Ball? I’ve said enough about it in the past so won’t bore anyone with repetition. I suppose there’s the faintest possibility that Act 2 completely turns this thing around but I doubt it. I’ll leave well alone from now.

My first 'Cats' was the recent Kilworth production, which I enjoyed more than I expected, so watched this afternoon alongside ALW's commentary - good combination

I was able to put up two tabs - one for the Cats and one for the commentary - not too bad on the coordination. I wonder if they will leave up ALW's commentary on YouTube when Cats comes down.
Some notes on his commentary - some of which was new to me.
1. The Americans wanted Michael Bennett to re-choreograph the show for Broadway. Bennet came to London, watched the show and told ALW, et al that he wouldn't change the choreo (maybe a small bit here and there) and wrote a lovely letter of congratulation to Gillian Lynne. And the American producers wouldn't believe that Bennett had written the note!
2. ALW says a British author could not/would not have written the Eliot poems - at least in the way they were written
3. Eliot wrote Skimbleshanks to a 1930s song - and ALW thinks he knows which one - but he wouldn't disclose it! ALW's music is different.
4. John Mills did his scene in one take.
5. Others here knew - I did not - that Stoppard had written a screen treatment.
6. ALW dedicated this showing to his cat Mika that just died. I think he really loved that cat.
7. Mr. Mistoffeles was the first poem set to music.
8. I don't think ALW liked the Hooper film...…
9. I really enjoyed ALW singing along at the end.

No one delivers 'Memory' like Elaine Paige. End of... Ey oop, Jane McDonald did. And Nicole Shirtswinger. Elaine is great at it but we’ve seen it, right down to the funny faces and sloppy mouth placement.

I put a very similar suggestion in his comments!

In his "live" commentary, he did hint that he might do something online with Cinderella.

The live commentary has about fifteen minutes of introduction and background - so if you are just trying to match up the filmed version - start the filmed version when the commentary is at about fifteen minutes. There are various places in the commentary with a specific reference so you can coordinate.

8. I don't think ALW liked the Hooper film...… I will say my twitter feed had never discussed James Corden as much as they did the afternoon this was on.

I’ve said it before, but I’d love the archive recording of Stephen Ward and that Unmasked workshop they did at The Other Palace. Both with little to no commercial value so hopefully they’ll appear.
