It's Cats. It'll sell by the bucketload. A $500m box office success looms. It comes out the day after the new Star Wars so I imagine it will struggle to make $50!

I’ve slept on it and watched it again this morning and doesn’t look so bad, maybe even a little exciting. Except Jennifer Hudson’s head. What’s that about?
However opening the day after Star Wars, a few days before chrimbo? That’s just suicide. I wonder if they will put it back? Even to Boxing Day

Surely Cats and Starwars are two very different markets? Yes and no. I wouldn’t Star Wars, my partner probably wouldn’t see Cats, but Young would happily see both- and probably will!

Start Wars is arguably gonna be the biggest film of this year (obviously Avengers came out too). Both are kids films and it’s JUST before Xmas so can’t see parents taking kids to both. Also Star Wars movie is literally the end of a saga.

Granted I watched the trailer at 5.30 this morning but thought it looked interesting but the cats faces were a bit creepy. Didn't like whoever was singing Memory. Sounded very cruise shippy and OTT. I'll still go and see the film though.

I think it will do well. Theatre fans will obviously see it, but you have such a great ensemble of actors, who I’m sure will all be doing promo left right and centre in the run-up. The Graham Norton sofa with Judi Dench, Ian Mckellen, J Hudson and Rebel Wilson for a start. You also have Taylor swift, who is number 11 on the most followed Instagram and number 5 most followed on Twitter - that’s a huge fan base there.

Looking back at it and also looking at the amazon costume above here are the things wrong with it.
The scaling is all wrong - they are too small. A cat is much bigger next to a gate and this makes them look like rats.
The CGI doesn’t look fully rendered. I was so concerned at the Genie in Aladdin yet the film worked. So I sit and hope.
Grizabella. Jenifer Hudson just looks plain weird and her head doesn’t look finished. Unlike the theatre show, not many of these cats have a full furry head - not sure it works.
The set - I think I like some of the designs but where is the rubbish dump? It’s like having Starlight without a bridge!
The fingers and hands. Cats don’t have them. To add them makes them all look like creepy aliens.
Memory - it’s too over sung and too much belting and riffing. You need a dramatic objective and purpose.
James Cordon - the most overused talent on this planet (I cant stand him) gosh he must have a great agent.

It looks awful, not sure what I expected but it's hardly different to the stage show albeit better sets?

But as far as riffing is concerned, I can’t hear any ornamentation or variations to the melody - to my ear, it’s sung as written??

I see all these complaints about Jennifer Hudson riffing her way through Memory, and I need to know what trailer you guys are watching? Or is today the day we realise that some people just never learned the difference between riffing and vibrato?

I think people are forgetting this is an adaption for the masses, not a recreation for theatre purists. Asia will go wild for this, they love CGI like this (which whilst it doesn't look strictly like a cat, it is incredible work) and animals - visually it will appeal. Agree the scaling is off but this isn't realism they're going for - they're singing, dancing animals after all. Whilst opening on top of a Star Wars might not be ideal, the Star Wars appeal is waining slightly as people become fed up with the milking of the brand. How did Mary Poppins 2 fair vs the Star Wars movie last year?

There wasn’t a Star Wars movie last year at Christmas, we had Aquaman instead and while Poppins did great in the UK, Aquaman did better overall grossing over $1bn

There’s a part of me that thinks that much the original production, people will laugh at it but then it becomes a huge hit.

Having slept on it I’ve actually changed my mind. Yes, it’s weird and bizarre and trippy but I suppose we’re experiencing the emotions that people felt when they saw the costumes for the original London production. Some of the cats look unfinished but the sets are magnificent and the cats that ARE finished look incredible. I’m sure once we’re in the cinema and the music is blasting we’ll be wrapped up in the story and we’ll forget about the human/cat hybrids.

So some of the cats are wearing clothes, and thus making the other cats resolutely naked, but it was ever thus. Donald Duck just wearing a sailor top and nowt else. And the scale seems to ebb and flow - one second they are tiny and next they are huge. Well perhaps it's all magical stuff.

Isn't Cats MEANT to be a sort of demented dream ballet though?

I think people would complain if they went for a realistic approach
