I absolutely love Wicked. It's my favourite musical hands down. The only thing that troubles me is that in my opinion the original Broadway cast recording isn't very good. Aside from the fact that I'm not a big fan of Idina Menzel's voice, I also think the music doesn't sound as good as it does now because I think it was reorchestrated later on, which makes it sound a lot better. So for these reasons I am still hoping for a London cast recording. I think it's very strange that nearly every show gets a new cast recording after a transfer, yet the most successful musical of the last decade still doesn't have a West End cast recording. I've been thinking, maybe our best chance of ever getting one will be at the 10th anniversary of the London production. If we don't get it then, we probably never will.

I guess no. I would have imagined it's because Menzel and Chenoweth are considered the definitive performances and Menzel opened the London run (with a fairly unknown Glinda) so no need to re-record it I suppose.

The days of musicals getting both an original West End and Broadway cast recording are pretty much over. Sure, they happen, but not nearly as much as they used to.
Pick your battles and you won't be disappointed in life. Or theatre. Or both.

I think if they were going to do it then they would have done it by now. There have been too many great cast members that picking just one definitive one for each role to appear on the cast album would seem odd, and recording a new one for the 10th anniversary when we'll seemingly have a new cast (or at least 2 new leads) wouldn't be representative of what the fans have loved about the show for 10 years. I think personally it would've been nice to get a cast album of Rachel Tucker or Willemijn Verkaik (although she does appear on the German cast album!) but now I just can't see it happening.
In a dream world it'd be nice to get a load of ex cast members back to record different versions off all of the songs and put them all on a CD, but realistically I can't see it happening. A few of ex Elphabas have featured their own versions of Wicked songs on their personal albums though, so there's that.

The original UK Glinda was AWFUL...

I thought that Helen Dallimore made a wonderful Glinda; she just wasn't a carbon copy of Chenoweth. It makes me laugh when people slate her because she made a few braver acting choices than the same old same old.

Pick your battles and you won't be disappointed in life. Or theatre. Or both. Not necessarily, Legally Blonde, Scottsbro Boys, Memphis and Kinky Boots all have West End cast recordings (even if they are live), and the same has happened the other way with Matilda and American Psycho (which is supposed to be released soon) releasing Broadway albums. As for Wicked, I doubt they'd do anything, unless the production and score is given a reboot in 15 years time like Cameron Mackintosh's Les Mis 25th anniversary UK Tour. Even then a Wicked one would still likely to be American.

Helen could not sing the role!! She did not have the belt or soprano lungs. That's a fact. She made great effort yes and is a lovely person, but her characterisation wasn't as successful as Chenoweth either who literally brought the house down when I saw the original Broadway cast. Did you see Chenoweth also?

Not everyone likes Idina and Kristin's performances in it. I think many people would buy a new cast recording

What I'm hoping for is a cast recording with the 10th anniversary cast. Ideally, they'd bring back Rachel Tucker. In my opinion she's the best London Elphaba, and the best Elphaba ever based on the ones I know. But even if they don't get her back, it would be great to have a cast recording to commemorate the 10th anniversary. It doesn't matter to me if it's a new cast.

The original UK Glinda was AWFUL... I never said they should do it with the original London cast. I wouldn't want that anyway because that would mean having Idina Menzel sing Elphaba again, and I don't like her singing in Wicked. I like her in general, but not in Wicked

Perhaps they will wait for the film (when ever!!) to be released and issue that.

I'd love a live recording from London actually - something that captures the entire play, dialogue and all. The problem with any new recording of Wicked I'd have thought is that it would detract from the original recording - which has such a huge fan base: for a musical, even their streaming figures are impressive - Defying Gravity on just Spotify has almost 15 million streams. I want it to detract from the original recording, because I think that one isn't as good as it could have been

It won't happen. The 10th release on Broadway was the OBC with a few extras stuck on a second CD. There's next to no chance London will get one for its 10th.
The next likely Wicked recording to be released will be the film, whenever that gets sorted.
I'm surprised no one has pointed out there originally was a London recording planned (I can't remember if it was to be with Idina or Kerry, but certainly was OLC otherwise), but it failed due to the producers wanting to use the Broadway orchestra recording with London actors singing, rather than the London orchestra.

Yeah but there already was a Broadway recording, so there's no need for a new one. A London cast recording would be different. It would have been stupid if they had used the original Broadway orchestra recording because it was reorchestrated, which made it better. I think they should just do a live recording like they did for Miss Saigon and Kinky Boots. It will capture the energy of the performance and it's probably a lot cheaper to produce. And they know tons of people would buy it. There's virtually no financial risk and a very big chance of financial success

The German cast recording has them singing over the Broadway orchestra. Clearly a cheap way of doing it, and if I was one of the musicians I'd be up in arms. (But better than nothing for the consumer??!)
Live like Miss Saigon - great. Live like Kinky Boots - dreadful. The only OLC to feature extensive audience coughing. Pathetic eye to detail, no idea how this got signed off.

Cameron Mackintosh also happy to invest time/personnel/resources/money into these things. That's the problem with live recordings. Done properly they can be epic. But many producers see them as a way of doing it on the cheap, not having to translocate cast and band to an (expensive) recording studio.

Why wasn't the 2013 Broadway cast any less worthy of a cast recording than the 2016 West End one? Agreed. Cameron Mackintosh also happy to invest time/personnel/resources/money into these things. To be honest, the west end needs a better cast first. It needs a better Elphaba. The current Glinda is perfect in my opinion. But there will be a cast change before the 10th anniversary anyway. I'm hoping for Rachel Tucker to return for a limited run as Elphaba.
