I really couldn’t think of more perfect homes for this than the likes of the Watermill, Regents Park or even the Minsck in Cornwall. It needs grounding in the elements or something similarly rustic. The watermill staged it in 2007. Press raved about but it left me cold - I remember leather and ribbons tied to instruments to try and make them look medieval! |

Whilst I’m with Ceebee in my love & respect for ‘Martin Guerre’, I do not wish to hear the score played/augmented/bolstered/butchered by a machine that will make it sound like an ice cream van has just entered the cul-de-sac or I’m about to get on a Blackpool carousel horse.

Just such a fascinating musical. To change and evolve so much yet to have such glorious parts in all versions. Even Chess doesn't come close to all the chopping and changing that went on here.
Wish the 2nd Prince Edward version had also been recorded!
Though never saw the Watermill version so no idea how it's changed again since the WYP tour.
Still find it utterly bizarre to use the alternate in the OLC (stunning though she sounds - but what a snub for the leading lady).

The problem with any retelling of this story is how to create tension when we already know the essence of the story.
Of the versions I have seen, I do prefer the original which I saw very early on in the run. It felt better than the rather heavy handed focus on the conflict between Catholic and Protestant communities which came to the fore with the earlier reworkings.
But they have never found a way to build real tension into the musical.
There is a lot of good music to be salvaged.
But the plot is a harder but to crack

Saw a version at the Goodman Theater in Chicago on the 90s and was blown away by it all. Longest-lasting memory is of the cast foot-stomping in the opening musical number and the sheer power of a simple gesture done in unison.

As long as they don't restore the prominence of the sex obsessed elder village women, and the lad singing songs to a corn dolly. I saw the West End version when it opened, and then the version after it closed for readjustments and reopened. Just watched a bit of archive on youtube and lyrics landed very four-square on too much 4/4 time, leaving lots of time to guess rhymes which always takes you out of it.

Hmm. While I loved some of the changes made for the second recording, I much prefer the orchestral sweep of the original. As many have said, the story lacks a certain dramatic tension.
The Jim Carey movie The Majestic is a partial update of the legend of MG (it’s set in the 50s in the aftermath of WW2) and I wonder if this might actually make a better musical; although not critically acclaimed at the time it’s actually a great little movie & is well worth checking out.

The burning of Louison used to make me cry. (Or at least the superb acting of Sebastien Torkia did when he was playing Benoit.) The three old crones can do one though. |
