From a scan at the booking tab on their site, it would appear the Union are doing Tom Browns Schooldays, Blitz and then something called Peace in our time. Blitz is exciting, i seem to recall the RSC going to revive this a while back that fizzled out.

Oh come on, this is a Lionel Bart show, you should realise the title is "BLITZ!" not "Blitz"  There's an obscure Noel Coward play called "Peace in Our Time" so the other one could possibly be that? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_in_Our_Time_(play) |

I shall definitely see Blitz and Tom Brown is a maybe, will wait for the reviews on that.
Shows at the Union rarely sell out and it's unallocated seating so no incentive to book early. Shame they don't do reduced-price previews like Southwark or an opening night special like the Gatehouse.
Nice intimate theatre. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was great fun. Whistle Down The Wind I saw last week and thought it was a dull score but extremely well performed.

Yes ,Whistle Down The Wind is a musical but a completely different show to the Andrew Lloyd Webber production. Set in Yorkshire, merely okay and definitely fooling a few people. I heard the lady behind me say to her husband that it's not like she remembered it...

Saw a professional production of Lionel Bart's Blitz! at the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch, some years ago. Its nowhere near the quality of Oliver! but probably somewhat better than Twang! About an East End Jewish family during the London Blitz.Can vaguely remember 2 catchy songs - 'Mums and Dads' and 'Down the Lane'(ie Petticoat Lane).Worth seeing if you are a fan of Bart. look the show up on Wikipaedia for more information and a synopsis of the complex plot.

I thought their Closer to Heaven was absolutely dire compared to the original, but I saw a Miller play there last year which I enjoyed very much. Some really great performances.
However my bulky frame was hanging precariously off a very wonky foldaway wooden chair for 2 hours and I felt like I was going to go hurtling to the floor at any minute which didn't make for a very enjoyable night at the theatre.

Same here. They had a really good run of musicals 2011-2014, when I saw 9 different shows there, but since then they haven't done anything I've particularly wanted to see.

Their production of Elegies for Angels.... last year was fantastic. Really well thought out and beautifully acted.
it's a difficult space to get to work well.

I agree on Elegies, that was excellent. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was ok too, as were Midnight and Twang.
Also for any tall folk, I've discovered the back row has a lot more legroom than the other rows so I always sit there now. It's such a small venue that the view is never rubbish from there.

I saw Tom Brown's Schooldays at the Union tonight. Enjoyed it but as the early reviews acknowledge it's a play with music rather than a musical. Suitable for ages 10+ I'd say. Almost full tonight.

Thanks for that, never sat at the back and I find anything other than the front row very uncomfortable. Will give it a go next time! I enjoyed "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "Market Boy" at the Union last year, hated "Hello Again". Nice venue and the food is pretty good too. |

Really enjoyed the two productions I saw at the Union last year - Can-Can and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - though there's nothing that's piqued my interest in the new season.

You have to wonder what informs their programming decisions. Have the shows they've paid on in the past couple of years paid off in terms of bums on seats...…..

I've been there three times recently - Whistle Down The Wind (70% full), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (95%) and Tom Brown's Schooldays (80-90%) . Two on weekday evenings, GPB Sunday afternoon. I think that like Southwark Playhouse the venue has a loyal following who attend most or all of their shows, as I now do with the musicals. Incidentally the front row seats there are rather uncomfortable hard plastic chairs. Good in a way as they don't go immediately but I may take a cushion in future ! |
