So I have a friend who I do like, but she went to see Kinky Boots for the first time in January and she is obsessed with it, but when I say obsessed I mean, she does the lottery every, single day, it is the only thing she listens too... she lied about how many times she has seen it. One Friday I asked her and she said she had seen it 12 times, the following Monday, it had changed to 24 times! She also tried to beat me out by saying she was a bigger fan even though she had never heard of Kinky Boots until this year whilst I have loved the music since 2012 and I am happy to have seen it 4 times thus far, I couldn't go to a show as often as 20+ times in 4 months. She won the lottery once and she asked me to go and I knew it would be a nightmare but I went along as I love the show...
SHE SANG ALONG! SHE WHISPERED LINES TO ME BEFORE THEY WERE SAID! SHE DONE THE DANCE ROUTINES IN THE FRONT ROW IN HER CHAIR!
Now I am all for a bit of whooping and cheering... If a star is in the show I will clap at the entrance if everyone else does etc... but I can't deal with that kinda crap in the theatre! Please tell me I am not the only one who has had to put up with this?!
*I apologise for the rant, I just had to get it off my chest and you seem like nice people, I like a lot of you haha. I am usually a lovely person!

Ahhhh... nope, not her. And I think I would of preferred to sit next to Miranda than my friend!
Honest to God, if murder was legal...!

I'm not sure what your issue is. Kinky Boots is obviously providing some sort of lifeline for her and why not? All you have to do is not go with her.

Sorry, I should of mentioned too that every time I see her around the Campus (I am at Uni) she is constantly singing it, when we go on nights out she is making snapchat videos of her lip synching to it and plays the Cast Recording whilst everyone wants to listen to cheesy party anthems haha. So it is not just a case of not going with her, though I agree that let her enjoy it. I wouldn't go with her again, it must of been massively distracting for the people around us though!

I understand your plight, Daniel, but, as obsessions go it's not the worst one to have. And she'll get over it. People do.

I understand your plight, Daniel, but, as obsessions go it's not the worst one to have. And she'll get over it. People do. I agree... the other day I said to her "if you go so much now, you will get bored of it really fast and not appreciate it" and she brought up the fact I have seen Wicked about 15 times, to which I responded "true, but I am not obsessed with it, I love it and those 15 performances are split over 5 years, not over 4 months"... so she is getting the picture, I'd rather she just be a fan of it but not let it take over hers (and our) lives haha. And this coming from me who is a big lover of Kinky Boots!

You need new friends, maybe ones who aren't obsessed with musicals or theatre...

The worst is when you DO go to a show with a friend and find out they're THAT audience member, but because they're a friend it's harder to shush them. I've been there, so I feel you!

Is she reading this thread ? I don't actually know haha, but I doubt it. She is not actually a fan of musical theatre, she had never been to see a theatre show until Kinky Boots, so it may have been the first time wow that got her hooked haha. And funnily enough, she hasn't seen any other show other than In the Heights which she said she, in her words, despised. Though she does have somewhat attention-seeking tenancies too so she likes to be the odd one out. Apparently In the Heights got a full standing ovation, she was the only one who stayed sitting.

Can you not at least take her to one side and say "look, I love how much you love the show, but when you go to see it, you need to sit quietly in your seat, because other people will be seeing it for the first time and they won't be able to enjoy it as much if they're being distracted by your singing, dancing, and reciting along"? Worst case scenario, she drops you, and you get a break from her constant oneupmanship and can just quietly enjoy the show on your own terms without her obsession slowly causing you to resent or even hate it.

I kind of had to do this at intermission with a friend with a, shall we say, DISTINCTIVE laugh when we were in the front row of a rather funny show. She's one of my oldest friends (as in, longtime; we're about the same age) and took it well. But man it was HARD and stressing me out for all of Act 1.

Let me know next time you go to see a show with her and I'll book the ticket behind her and pointedly tell her to shut up if she starts singing and stop moving if she's dancing. I really dislike people who can't be considerate of others in a theatre.

And i can understand the whooping or cheering at the end of a song, even I do that sometimes if I am really impressed! but whne it comes to attempting a full line read, yeah thats too much.

I can't make up my mind if it's worse to have a friend obsessed or not to have a single friend who cares about musical theatre, sigh. But I do know what you mean. I get obsessed about all sorts of things fro time to time, but each obsession is bound to blow over eventually.

I myself am obsessed with musical theatre. It is more just the way she goes about her obsession rather than the actual obsession itself.

It was just an opportunity to whine about my lack of friends who share my interest in MT. And I do know what you mean. There are many ways in which various people's various obsessions manifest which I find embarrassing, but then again, I'm pretty sure I've unwittingly embarrassed others on occasion, too. (Hell, I've even found my own behaviour embarrassing now and then...)

Oh trust me, it was only because I was in the front row I didn't say anything. The front row at the Adelphi, I don't want to distract the actors or anything, even though she was probably causing more of a distraction! I have been embarrassed too, even about how I react in shows. As I do enjoy a lively audience, cheering and clapping etc... I have no problem and join in! but sometimes, when you are the only one whooping, I get a tad embarrassed, but then I remember that the audience will catch up with me within the next song or two (most of the time!)
