Could it be the Hope Mill production making a (very) belated transfer? I’d be surprised if it was, based on who’s casting it and that it doesn’t mention that it’s a transfer of that production. But you never know! Who’s casting it? |

I've always been intrigued by this for launching Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff (both of whom I love) but I've never been able to get into the OBCR. What songs should I start with?

There is a recording of a German production (Frankfurt I think) but sung in English that is very good. Craig Mather is on it. It also includes the introduction to ‘Purple Summer’ that was omitted from the OBCR.

its one show i have never gotten into. The music all sounds the same to me. I've tried with it a few times but it just (mamma who) bores me to death.

So. Much. Angst.... its one show i have never gotten into. The music all sounds the same to me. I've tried with it a few times but it just (mamma who) bores me to death. I saw the HM production and was a bit underwhelmed (apart from the production values which were ace ). Then it was one of those situations when you cant get it out of your head so I went back. Totally converted. |

I saw the National Theatre of Wales’ version of this (in Welsh) a few years ago and it was fantastic. Performed in traverse, it was very intimate and very simply staged. I’ve wanted to see a professional English version since but they set a high bar...

I saw the Deaf West version so I'd like to catch a different production to see just how different they are.
While I loved it, none of the music jumped out at me so I've never hunted the soundtrack down.

I heard a rumour that the Almeida had the rights at some point... The Almeida rights expired this year, last I heard, they were the reason the Hope Mill production couldn’t transfer... whether they expended the rights or someone else snapped them up for 2020 I don’t know. |

Confirmed by an actor friend who has said casting notices have went out for a production to start 4th July. No mention of venue x

Interesting there’s no mention of venue as that will greatly impact on payscales and the spectrum of people they will have auditioning.

The original London cast were all in their late teens/early 20s (16-23 if I recall) excluding the two adult roles.
The casting notices should give some indication of the pay rates - and the casting director being used may give a clue as to the scale of the production. I don't believe any major London producing theatre currently holds the professional rights - so more likely an off west end/fringe production/hire - though there's quite a long lead time so maybe it's more than a 6/8 week expenses only/profit share!

I saw this for the first time at the now-defunct Stockwell Playhouse a few months ago. A high standard amateur production.
Found it all a bit too dark for my upbeat taste though quite enjoyed the musical numbers.

I remember listening to the OBCR a first time and giving up after three songs top. I couldn't quite get what the hype was about and put it aside for a few months. I gave it another try and still failed to get through to the end of it... and assumed it just wasn't for me. Cue to probably about a year later, I was in NY at the TKTS booth deciding on the spot what to see... and almost as a joke asked if they had anything for 'Spring awakening' (I mean, both Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele were still in the cast) and I was offered amazingly good seats at a ridiculous prize. So I said, well, why not? And... it was a revelation. Everything that kind of annoyed me on the recording, all the bits that I couldn't quite get the point of... it all immediately made sense and I remember at intermission saying 'why on earth has it taken me so long to get it? it's just beautiful!' So my advice is, if you get an opportunity maybe with a rush ticket or offer, give it a chance. Maybe you'll still hate it, but it's got a story to tell. |

One of those shows that get overhyped on Broadway, then die a quick death in London. The German production was postponed for a premiere in Vienna, but after that silently closed after a while it never came to Germany in its original form. Had quite a second life as student productions though. Saw the show in London (stage seat), was nice, but not a revelation. Maybe swearing on stage and some nudity was a highlight for American teens, but I think there were already more progressive and provocative productions of this 1891 Play in 1960s German theatre.  |

99% sure this is going to be at the Almeida. They have shows booking until 27th June so 4th July which was mentioned as a potential start date would fit with that. |
