Catherine Zeta Jones would tick all the boxes.

Could this lure Lily Savage out of retirement?

I do hope not!
The casting does have to have an element of “national treasure” though doesn’t it? That’s what seems to be the case with earlier successful productions. If so that unticks the boxes for Catherine ZJ and Sharon DC whilst pushing Jane McD front and centre again...

Sarah Lancashire or Tamzin Outhwaite could also work, as they are names the general public would easily recognise and have both appeared in the west end a few times

What about Gemma Craven? She may have retired, I'm not sure what she's doing nowadays but she always had glorious warmth, killer comic timing and a lovely voice. She could fill The Shaftesbury and The Prince of Wales in the 80s it would be lovely to have her back. Wow, thats a name i haven't heard in a long time, I wonder if she's still in the business?
She wouldn't sell tickets but Kim Criswell would be great as Dolly. Too bad she has a difficult reputation.
Kim Criswell did a concert performance as Dolly in Dublin and she was fantastic.

I love drag but I hate the idea of a drag Dolly (in an actual production of the show...) as I think her story is a uniquely female one.
As much as the show is a lot of fun, there is depth to be mined in the character. Before The Parade Passes By reduced me to tears when I saw Donna Murphy perform it on Broadway. The character deserves (a lot) more than a Panto dame.

Since we're throwing new names into the hat, what about Celia Imrie? She's a brilliant comic actress and was fantastic in Acorn Antiques: the Musical. I'd love to see her do more on stage. Not a 'national treasure' per se, but definitely a respected and widely popular name. I can imagine her being a terrific Dolly.

She is an incredible suggestion!
She was absolutely wonderful in Noises Off. Such a great comic actress.

I can’t believe this name hasn’t been suggested yet - I can just picture her at the top of the staircase with her scarlett head piece and feather boa...

Linzi Hately would do it superbly. I'm not for one moment suggesting she could sell it. But she would be brilliant.

Sutton Foster reminds me of Gemma Craven. A very classy sort of enthusiasm.

I believe if Imelda can do it she will. I remember an interview when she was doing Gypsy at the Savoy she was also filming and said that a car would take her straight from the set to the theatre every night. She is a trooper and one of the old school actors.

Yes , just heard her on radio 2. Guess everything is up in the end at the moment. At least it is still planned to be done at some point!

She is a trooper and one of the old school actors. I can guarantee most ‘new school’ actors would relish at the chance of doing two jobs at once - particularly if one was a West End lead role and the other was filming on set. The people on the west end who aren’t ‘troopers’ tend to be the ‘stars’ who have been stung casted - you can usually rely on properly trained professionals to be able to sustain their 8 shows and then some.

Well I can think of several "current" west end shows that lead cast members dont do 8 shows a week.

I wouldn’t say it’s an ‘old school’ thing not to call out of the show - more a demonstration of someone’s own commitment to their craft, stamina - and may well say a thing or two about the role or the show (ie Prince of Egypt...!)

I think it’s unfair to single out name castings for unreliability - lots of them are very reliable (Kat McPhee and Sara Bareilles for recent west end examples) but it’s just that you tend to hear about it more if they have a tendency to miss shows - like Dove Cameron and Alfie Boe. Also got me thinking about this recent tweet by David Massey, whose been the company manager for various shows, lol! 😆

Just decided that I would kill to see Vanessa Williams have a crack at Dolly (I may have just watched Celebrity Drag Race)
