I was at the 'end of season' event at CFT on Monday where Daniel and Kathy gave details of the highs and lows of the season (Oklahoma and This is My Family were both very well received by critics and audiences, the 3 female led plays - Hedda Tesman, Plenty and The Deep Blue Sea were a bit of a trio of misery and needed some light to go with the shade...and Macbeth was very marmite). However, they were giving nothing away about 2020...not a scrap. But I still have my hopes pinned on Hedwig and The Angry Inch, that would be great in the Minerva, and I suspect the traditional revival of an older musical in the main house, I reckon 'A Little Night Music' is a good shout. If I hear any rumours, I'll be sure to share.

I was at an opening night summer before last and i pushed myself onto DE to tell him he simply MUST do A Little Night Music with Chichester local lass Mrs Bucket!
He had a little twinkle in his eye and told me I had read his mind........

I mean they aren't awful but something is definitely missing for me now. The worst case being Me and My Girl which should have been a home run for Chichester but was the worst show I've seen there. Not helped by a hopelessly miscast leading man.

Is it really a bad thing if a show doesn’t transfer? Obviously it’s a bonus but it shouldn’t be the be all and end all.
A number of plays have transferred such as The Watsons and Quiz

But not that many really. You're right, a West End transfer isn't the ultimate arbiter of excellence but it does create a buzz and it always feels a bit of a damp squib when the shows just end after a few weeks on the South coast. Under Daniel Evans, the seasons now just feel workmanlike, but you just sort of know now not to expect any big London buzz which is a shame. For years, Chichester was synonymous with great London transfers and it's a shame that that's not really the case anymore. |

The main stage at Chichester is BIG.. so it’s very hard to transfer shows from There to the west end , particularly when so few theatres are ever available. The seasons have been low on excitement in the last few years though . I think the year of Gypsy was the last one that was genuinely exciting.

All four of the London transfers since Daniel Evans took over have been from the Minerva and whilst I agree CFT shouldn't exist as a try out for the West End - it had over the previous years produced quite a number of main house transfers - often musicals - and coupled with Evans's successes at Sheffield meant that expectations were high. I think the main house shows have been a tad disappointing on his watch - for whilst there has actually been some good stuff it's rarely fallen into the unmissable category.
What was interesting in the 2019 summer season was that he directed only one production - a Minerva restaging of This is My Family (which he'd done twice at Sheffield)- whilst his own large scale show was actually in London and LA with Light in the Piazza. Given that there was a new Executive Director this year, albeit one with a longstanding connection to Chichester, following the shock departure of Rachel Tackley citing 'different leadership styles' between her and Evans, one wonders whether it was a wise move to take on such a production during the height of the summer season. Piazza is due to play in Sydney in August 2020 which may impact on his availability for the Chichester season this year.

The Chekhov Trilogy
In addition a revamped version of Barnum did an extensive national tour - as did Mack and Mabel.
And a few more including The Pajama Game, Taken at Midnight, South Downs and Private Lives came into town from the Minerva.
