^ I have no idea whatsoever where that is but I do remember Eddie Waring saying “Warrington” on the telly... would it have been to do with rugby?!? I can recall his voice as he was a presenter on It’s A Knockout (or Jeux Sans Frontieres as the posh version was known!) and I thought that was the best programme ever! (At the time...  ) |

Was that first tour a wholesale recreation of the West End version? No. From memory they replicated much of the original production but it certainly lacked the moving floor, the large TV screens and all the big production values. It lacked the TV screens. The chessboard floor was much, much smaller than the London one, but it lit up, revolved, and tilted. At least, it lit up, revolved, and tilted in Bradford, Liverpool, and Manchester, so I assume it did everywhere else as well. Pictures here: CHESS 1990 UK tour |

(At the time... ) Yes we are quite the name in Rugby League...or we were when I lived there 25 years ago. Turns out I was 17 then when it did Manc, and I had seen plenty of exciting things by then so not sure why it holds such memories...other than Storm who I’d already seen in ‘Blood Brothers’. Anyway, she’s welcome back whenever! |

I remember the spinning / tilting Chess board well from the Bristol Hippodrome. Rebecca Storm and Maurice Clarke remain the standard that other pairings in that role need to meet in my opinion. Was initially a bit disappointed as neither were a "name" to me (as a teenager that was very important) but it didn't take long for all doubts to be dispelled.

Hark at us! So desperate for a bit of real news about the up-and-coming production at ENO, we’re arguing about how much the chessboard floor tilted in the 1990 tour...  It seems the further north the tour went, the more the stage tilted, which makes sense in a medieval kind of way. I wonder if the new production will feature a tilting stage... and if it doesn’t what gimmick it will feature to hold our interest? Because you gotta have a gimmick! |

The Chess games will be filmed with a panasonic camcorder off of the 80’s and projected onto a polycotton sheet hung at the back of the stage and onto the audiences 3” portable b&w tellies ontheir seat backs.

^ True story: Years ago now I was filling my car with petrol when onto the forecourt comes this natty little sports car and three women in matching outfits jumped out. The outfits were powder pink and comprised flared trouser-suits, matching capes and berets (which were worn at a jaunty angle). All three had bubbly, curly hair like Shirley Temple. They looked like they belonged in Hollywood in the 50s; this was Whetsone High Road in the 90s. When I went to the kiosk to pay, there was a lot of talk about them. Yes, it was The Beverley Sisters! Someone in the kiosk was saying, “Ooh, the twins argue like cat and dog! Poor Joy is forever having to sort them out...” (It’s a shame she’s no longer with us or the Arbiter’s role could have been hers.)
I have just been looking at their page on Wikipedia and seen that they used to record on the Decca label. Now funnily enough I was in West Hampstead this weekend where the Decca recording studio is situated. Decca no longer own it. It is now rented by... ENO! With Chess in mind, I skulked about a bit outside, hoping to catch a ‘name’ bobbing in and out so I could come back and report. Nope! Nuffink! Zilch!
But you know what they say: No News Is Good News!

Thanks for all the info SF. Having worked at the Royal for many years (ago)I have all the Posters, programmes etc some where in the house. That was as stated a great pairing of Rebecca and Maurice in Chess. I'm not sure now IF it was a Royal production. Rebecca came back to the Royal for Evita starting there and Maurice back for Brigadoon staring there as well.

Hilty has a concert and a 2 week residency in the US during the ENO run so she's out. Emma Williams hadn't announced what she's up to yet so she may be a possibility for Svetlana or Florence?

How many tickets are still left to shift? Are they still dependent on a big name?
Haven’t seen much marketing for this around London so far, apart from the occasional poster with the horrible quote “You know it so well”...
The use of the black on white makes it look like the concert too.

The venue is so big and tix so pricey hey will have to have one or two names or the whole thing will be a disaster. Very odd they still havent announced anyone!
