Aww man I loved her in Follies and I'd love to see this in an actual theatre but it would be quite the trek to Opera North. Then again I'm sure plenty of people have done further journeys and this is just me being spoiled by being in London most of the time.

I'm probably the only person who is more excited by Quirijn de Lang as Frederik than Josephine Barstow as Mme Armfeldt. Now quite so sure about Stephanie Corley as Desiree. Then again I'm sure plenty of people have done further journeys and this is just me being spoiled by being in London most of the time. If you're travelling from London then it's only 2h15 & a direct train, which in my book would be an easy journey. I've done Cambridge to either Leeds or Nottingham several times over the last few years to see ON productions, which takes longer because I can't get a direct train, & all the trips have been worth it. I'll certainly be making my second trip to Leeds next year for this (already got Nozze di Figaro booked in February).

I've just looked and it seems it'll be on when I've got exams so I probably won't be able to catch it.

This is fantastic news. I have never seen a production of this, so it is definitely one to tick off my Sondheim list.
I hate to that person, but where are the best places to sit in the Leeds Playhouse? (I wish there were TheatreMonkey seating plans for regional venues).

At the moment I'm living less than an hour from Leeds. By the time this comes around I won't be, but I will certainly make the trip back for it. Their Into The Woods was superb.

I hate to that person, but where are the best places to sit in the Leeds Playhouse? (I wish there were TheatreMonkey seating plans for regional venues). It’s a large thrust in a modern theatre. A bit like The Crucible in layout. Legroom good, steep rake from the very front and all the way back. There are no restricted views but the further to the side you go the more you’ll be looking at the actors side-on.

Tickets are now on sale. The first two rows of the side blocks are only £14 so I went for that. The view should hopefully be reasonable given I've booked the end nearest the centre block & the price seems ridiculously low. Though admittedly the fact I'll have to spend about £40 to get there slightly negates the bargain!

^^ I sat around there for Into The Woods Dawnstar and it was absolutely fine. Is it your first visit?

^^ I sat around there for Into The Woods Dawnstar and it was absolutely fine. Is it your first visit? I don't think so. At least, I've been to the West Yorkshire Playhouse once & I gather it's the same venue under a different name! I saw White Christmas there a few years ago but then I was sitting in the central block. Unfortunately I've now looked at train tickets & it appears it's going to cost me nearly £90 to get from Cambridge to Leeds!! I'm sure it wasn't nearly that expensive when I went up last year. I may have to re-think this trip as that is a ridiculous price to travel to a place only 150 miles away.

I’m all booked for it. Thank you BurlyBeaR for the advice on seating.
Even though this isn’t until June, I am very excited for my first NIGHT MUSIC!
I wonder how many more Sondheim revivals we can look forward to in 2020?

I thought it would be a long way for you Dawnstar when you mentioned it. Anyone travelling should add in a min 25 to 30 mins to walk from the station to the theatre. It’s on the edge of the city centre across a busy dual carriageway (with crossings obvs) but it confused the hell ut of me first time. You can get a cab but for a vehicle to get there it has to go on a detour around the one way system so I wouldn’t, unless there are issues with the walk.

I have just checked a random date and tickets from Cambridge to Leeds are available for £19.30 each way. I use Trainline's Ticket Alert to email when the Advance tickets become available. They tend to be released about 12 weeks or so before the date of travel and they do tend to sell out quickly at the lower fares.

I was looking 12 weeks ahead to get an idea of prices & the cheapest it was coming up with was £87 for the Saturday. Maybe all the advanced tickets already sold out as that Saturday is just before Christmas. I suppose I can only hope that that's the case & it'll be cheaper come February & May.

Booking an advance train ticket on the East Coast Mainline is all a bit complicated at the moment, Dawnstar. Mon to Fri tickets are available 12 weeks ahead which, from recollection, takes us up to Friday 13th December. However, the full weekend timetable has not yet been finalised with Network Rail, presumably because of engineering work, so advance tickets are currently only available four weeks ahead. Rather than all advance tickets being sold, none have been sold! 🚄

Well I am retired with time on my hands so I thought I would take a look at what the problem may be with the train tickets. I also looked at alternative options. There are some but for your journey although cheaper are quite long journeys. I have just checked the trains again and advance tickets are available up to 13th December for Mon-Fri but the latest Saturday that has them seems to be the 26th October. I have had problems myself booking train tickets for weekends when engineering work is going on and it can be a guess as to when and if advance tickets are put on sale by the rail companies. An alternative is to have a look at what raileasy.trainsplit.com/ offers. This is a split ticketing web site. I put in your route for 23rd November and it gave this multiple journey route for £44.28 (inc. £7.58 booking fee): Cambridge (dep 06.05) to Ely Super Off-Peak Day Return £3.20 Ely to Nottingham Advance Single £6.80 Nottingham to Leeds (arr 11.15) Advance Single £7.50 Leeds (dep 18.11) to Wakefield Westgate or Kirkgate Anytime Day Single £4.10 Wakefield Westgate or Kirkgate to Sheffield Advance Single £4.40 Sheffield to Ely Advance Single £10.70 Ely to Cambridge (arr 23.03) You could also go by National Express coaches, changing at Milton Keynes for £29.90 but it does take about 6 hours!

Booked my ticket for the first performance. It’s a bank holiday on Friday so might take the train up a day early and make trip out of it. Journeying to the North in the name of theatre

Rather than all advance tickets being sold, none have been sold! 🚄 Ah, that may well explain it then! I've just had a look & weekdays in November are indeed at lot cheaper than weekends. I really hope they manage to sort out their timetabling by next year, as both my planned trips are on Saturdays. Well I am retired with time on my hands so I thought I would take a look at what the problem may be with the train tickets. I also looked at alternative options. Oh help, that's rather complicated! I was hoping to do the route I've done before, which is Cambridge - change at Stevenage - Leeds & takes about 3 hours, depending on how the connection works out. I@m certainly not prepared to spend 6 hours each way on a coach, no matter how much cheaper it is!

With split ticketing you don’t necessarily change trains with every ticket. You’re just dividing the journey up into several smaller chunks each with its own ticket. You could potentially be on the same train for a whole journey (although that wouldn’t be possible for Cambridge to Leeds because there’s no direct service).

Agreed split ticketing is fine when you are on the same train but gets silly with a complicated journey and the added risk of missed connections.
I have just booked via the Opera North web site. This has a different selection of seats to that of the Leeds Playhouse and does not charge the Playhouse's £2.50 booking fee.

Yes, it wasn't the split ticketing pasrt of fossil 's post that I was referring to as compilcated but the actual route, with several changes there/back rather than just one change each way. Agreed split ticketing is fine when you are on the same train but gets silly with a complicated journey and the added risk of missed connections. I have just booked via the Opera North web site. I hadn't realised that the theatre was selling tickets separately to ON, as I don't think that's been the case when I've booked for ON operas as soon as booking opened. I do'nt think I'd've gone for a different seat though, given the front row of the central block is £45, so 3 times the price of the seat I've booked just across the aisle.

I’ve just booked for a sat matinee. Simple 1hr journey from Manc. Expanding my Sondheim repertoire. I’ll probably hate it at first hearing then think about it for ages after. That’s how it’s worked out with my limited exposure so far.
