I saw the matinee yesterday afternoon and quite enjoyed it. Seemed to go down well with the audience (including the old guy in a MAGA hat sat next to me)

There is a lot of smoking in the script. Even if you cut half of it, you still fill the theatre with smog.
But if you think to one of the influences on the script - Ma Nuit Chez Maud (the film by Rohmer) - it does sort of make sense.
And, of course, smoking was far more prevalent in the 80s than it is now.
