How about this for an idea?Jules Verne’s famous story set to an 80’s soundtrack including Kylie and the B52’s.....at the beautiful Frank Matcham-designed Grand Theatre in my home town of Blackpool throughout late July and all of August.
I will be there with the fam in a few weeks.Hope it doesn’t close after the first night! It sounds ludicrously bonkers!
Oh,I do like to be beside the seaside...super lol.

Wish Kent wasn't so far from Blackpool, hoping it will be a huge hit and be in London by October....
There was a version of this which had a run at Cadogan Hall a couple of years ago.Not a musical and aimed at a young audience but that was seriously good.

It's a very famous book and a plot that lends itself well to a musical theatre adaptation. I wish someone would develop a proper musical based on this instead of just throwing a handful of old pop tunes at it. (Not wanting to rain on anyone's parade, it might be great fun, but still, this source material could be used for much better...)

First preview tonight...first time ever that the Grand,Blackpool have solo-produced their own musical...break a leg to them all on their first show! Will be there tomorrow afternoon...also doing the backstage theatre tour on Friday which should be fascinating.

A riot of a show.Takes elements of the Jules Verne story and adds panto-style one-liners and re-imagined 80’s hits(eg Walk Like An Egyptian becomes a slow sultry blues number to suit the action).Lots of audience interaction in a fun way.We got £10 preview tickets.Best pure fun I’ve had in a theatre for ages.Completely crazy but it works.

It appears to be a 'family musical' so I'm not sure what exactly that means in terms of being adult-friendly. Back at the Blackpool Grand Theatre from Friday 8 October to Friday 5 November. Seating being sold socially distanced and I've just booked for £15 a single front row stalls seat, plus an overnight B&B in Blackpool for £20 so I can also see the Illuminations after the show . Very cheap travel partly due to the Northern Trains £1 ticket sale and also split tickets - North Kent to Blackpool costs just £15 in each direction with my railcard. I do get a buzz out of getting the travel and accommodation for shows hundreds of miles away at rock bottom prices. |

Having a read about the show and sounds like it's a lot of fun. I love a jukebox musical so this is right up my street. A row B stalls ticket just sorted for the 1st Sunday matinee preview for £15. A trip to Blackpool is always a good day out and The Grand Theatre is a lovely building as well. Thanks FrontroverPaul for bumping up this thread. |

I wonder if the 1946 Cole Porter-Orson Welles musical is kicking around. It had 4 mechanical elephants and a live one, film montages, about 50 stagehands for the 38 elaborate set changes, no plot and a run of 75 performances.
It was supposed to come to London, but the unions refused to use the Broadway sets, these were destroyed and it was discovered there was no money to replace them. So, no show.
Those were the days.

I really enjoyed it when I saw the original production.
Certainly no mega musical, but it doesn't need to be - not at the prices it charges anyway!
A really good camp, fun night out that's suitable for the whole family.
No major spoilers but what I will say is there's a boat called Eileen that may or may not feature in a musical number 🤣

A nice day out to Blackpool for today’s matinee. A real tongue in cheek show that really doesn’t take itself seriously delivered by a wonderful cast of 8. With plenty of 80’s hits and audience participation thrown in made for a great afternoon spent at the Grand theatre (its Victorian auditorium is stunning) A lovely way to end the week. With no programme available, having a look on the Grand website no mention of any musicians in the listings so I think the music was prerecorded and tracks played by the sound desk as required. Despite there being only a few patrons in this afternoon, there was certainly plenty of energy from us in the auditorium joining in when needed ( TallPaul, dancing was involved!). |

I happened to be in Blackpool at the weekend so saw the Sunday evening show. Overall I enjoyed it and it certainly appealed to my sense of humour, though I felt that it veered a bit too far towards panto at times. I don't mind some audience participation but it felt like a bit too much here. The cast were wonderful and its always a pleasure to be back in the Grand Theatre.
