No matter who is in the lead, it is a long play with not much to keep you excited. Been in it twice. Second time, I should have known better.

Not a play that interests me. I saw it at Greenwich yonks ago with Edward Petherbridge, Jemma Redgrave and Jason Connery! I even missed the RSC with Sher.

It is a play that sells because of the lead actor not because it is a great play.
It is too long for the plot. Most characters are wafer thin.
It is an opportunity for a lead actor to show off. And there are better plays that offer similar platforms

And there are better plays that offer similar platforms The Depardieu film is great, though, a very rare example of a great film being made of a play. The language is funny (in the French) and should be funny in English. If you've got a good rhymer, it should make one laugh. But a play to see a couple of times in one's life, not ten, I agree. |

The Terry Hands/Derek Jacobi RSC production was quite brilliant. On the other hand the Howard Davies/Stephen Rea NT one was very dull. Sher was OK as far as I recall - the type of show-off role he likes. |

The STC/Andrew Upton 2014 production was really, really funny and one of my favorite things on stage. Richard Roxburgh played it to the hilt ( pun intended!) and was a very physical Cyrano, the sword fight was worthy of an Errol Flynn movie!

I mostly enjoyed the Citz/NTS production last year with Brian Ferguson in the lead. I can’t help but feel that McAvoy will give a similar performance.
And yes, it was long and went on a bit in the final act.

How long is the running times roughly?
Only yesterday I was thinking that James McAvoy hasn’t done theatre for a while, since he was excellent in the Ruling Class, how could I forget him on that unicycle!!!

The full Burgess translation can be a 3.5 hour plus jobby
It rarely comes in much under 3 hours

It's a commercial west end version. I'd be surprised if it's over 3 hours.

The Inheritance - both parts run well over 3 hours In terms of other Cyranos, Robert Lindsay's at the Haymarket was a 3 hour version, the recent National Theatre of Scotland version ran 3 hours 5, Joseph Fiennes for Chichester was 3 hours 10 We don't know much about the script they are planning on using - it is different to the one Lloyd directed on Broadway with Douglas Hodge (which was the Ranjit Bolt) - this one would appear from the picture to be a Martin Crimp version. Is Crimp known for brevity? But 3 hours plus seems to be the norm - there are shorter versions - so there might be hope. But I wouldn't expect a 100 minute no interval evening |

Now I do like a bit of Mr McAvoy and I send my heartfelt thanks that this is not planned for the Trafalgar Studios so seating may actually be comfortable

OH. Now, see, I can take or leave Jamie Lloyd, and having experienced his fans I'm generally reluctant to book for McAvoy, but Martin Crimp has me interested...

I have been waiting for this announcement one of James' Instagram live streams he did 4 odd months ago. Someone on the chat asked if he was going to be back on stage and he said what it was.

I saw the Kevin Kline/Jennifer Garner version on Broadway in 2007 and liked it a lot(mostly because of Klines expertise in erm, overegging the pudding and making Cyrano into a tribute to Inspector Clouseau at times): I like James McAvoy a lot as an actor but will wait to see who else is in this before getting too excited about booking to see this.
