^It's called "colour blind casting," Dawnstar - the best person for the job got the role and audiences will see Cooper, not skin colour. Baemax, I'm sure, will fill you in on the background details of the whole theorem, if you ask nicely. I know some of the characters in TCAABR aren't the brightest but are we supposed to believe that they're stupid enough to mistake a black Freeboys for a white Freeboys? That just makes no sense to me. No one would be that stupid in real life so why would they be on stage? But.....it's not real life. TCAABR couldn't be further from real life. None of it makes sense. Cooper is about half the weight of the real Freeboys, so why did they recognise him because of that? Or a multitude of many other reasons that make Cooper so different from Freeboys, and so many other things that, when you think about real life, none of them should be stupid enough to fall far. So the characters just see Cooper, not the fact he's black. Really couldn't have less to do with it if they tried. Maybe it'll be even funnier that they fall for Freeboys going from white to black, if people really can't see past the colour of his face, that is. I think it's something that people are really going to have to get over quite quickly.

Yes and I thought it implausible enough Cooper & Sam being mistaken for Freeboys when they were so much thinner. The thing is, they try to make themselves look like Freeboys: wigs, fake moustaches, glasses, suits. So there is acknowledgment within the piece that looking as similar to Freeboys as possible is necessary for the plot. Otherwise they might as well get Caprice to pretend she's her father!

In case anyone's still interested, cast change is going to be 5th February with the new cast starting on 7th. The new cast will be starting rehearsals this coming week so an announcement is due shortly. Source: interval chat with Henry Shields at TPTGW last night. Realised I screwed up the second date on this. There's no Tuesday performance the week the new cast start so they're actually starting Wednesday 8th. In case anyone's interested in some understudy viewing, Holly Sumpton has tweeted that she'll be on for Ruth tomorrow (15th). That's the first time we've had advanced notice for a 2nd cover. Guess who promptly decided to squeeze in an extra visit!

For the record, the original cast finished tonight. (Not sure anyone other than me on here actually cares but just in case...)
There was a bit of an inadvertant muck-up matinee when some things accidentally went wrong: the bag didn't fall from the flies, stuff didn't splatter out of the fan at Cooper's death & Dave accidentally decapitated a seagull! For the eveing show Holly & Mark joined in the church scene so all 14 cast members were onstage together for the only time, which was nice.

Well, I DO care about the original cast! Went for my second visit in Jan just to see this bunch before they leave.. With these guys it's always even funnier when things goes wrong unintentionally ))
Does anybody know how long is the run for PTGW on Broadway and what's the next project?

Saw this a few days ago and wasn't massively impressed. Yes, there were funny parts where I laughed a lot, but it seemed to rely much more on a few funny gags that went on a bit too long. Not sure if it's just because the cast are new, but a lot of lines were delivered in a rush and so lost impact. I thought The Play That Goes Wrong was far superior to this.

Apologies for the double post but I can't edit my previous post as it is 2 days old. Warning: this is LONG! I held off going to see the new cast until the original cast had done their TPTGW week & gone to NY. I still however expected to miss the original cast a lot, after all I did see them 24 times. However seeing the show last night I was mostly too busy gawping at the stage in shock at how much has been changed to have time to miss the old cast! I thought the new cast did jolly well. Individually: Gareth is very good as Mitch. This is definitely the right role for him to be promoted too, as it suits him better than the other 3 roles he covered (I did see him in the other 3). I really liked Steffan Lloyd-Jones as Sam. Usually I find Dave is the toughest act to follow so this is an unexpected bonus. Now wardrobe just need to come up with a better moustache-fixing method for him... Hannah Boyce made Caprice more hard & unlikeable & this does work for the character. I remember @theatremonkey .com a few months ago describing Caprice as having "a mind like a steel trap" & me thinking I didn't quite get that from Charlie or Ellie but last night it fitted the character. The downside of Caprice being less likeable is caring less about her & Sam. Tania Mathurian was good as Ruth and, being mostly a musicals actress (I saw her in Hairspray a few years ago), obviously has a great voice for Ruth's songs. I liked Chris Pizzey as Smitties. Bearded & in costume he looks disconcertingly like an older version of Jeremy! Having an older Freeboys made less difference than I thought it would, though I did find myself on a couple of occasions hoping that Sean Kerns had been warned in advance what he'd have to do! I felt the role of Warren seemed to make less of an impact, maybe due to some of the Act 1 changes, but Mark Hammersley (the other understudy promotion) was fine. The role of Everyone Else has borne the brunt of the changes so it cannot really be compared to how it was previously but I thought Jeremy did the best job he could with what the role is now (if this sounds grudging it is because I'm not keen on some of the changes & is not reflection on Jeremy's performance). Cooper too has lost some of the traits that I found made him previously very likeable but Miles Yekkinni was okay with what the role is now. The understudies are currently rotating around the ensemble tracks. Last night it was Niall, Sam Fogell & Paula Kay on. To be honest I would have preferred to see Mike & Holly to the last 2 but that's just because I know Mike & Holly & don't know the others. If anyone is interested in seeing understudies on, scheduled dates will be from May as holiday is embargoed before then (which seems a long time, don't most shows only ban it for the first month of a cast?). Covers are given as follows: Holly Sumpton 1st Caprice, 2nd Ruth Paula Kay 1st Ruth, 2nd Caprice Mike Bodie 1st Freeboys, Smitties & Cooper, 2nd Mitch Niall Ransome 1st Warren & Everyone Else, 2nd Sam & Cooper Sam Fogell 1st Mitch & Sam, 2nd Warren & Everyone Else No-one is credited with 2nd cover for Freeboys or Smitties so??? Notes below in spoiler tags going into the changes in more detail. These are taken from notes I scribbled during the interval & on the way home so coherence not guaranteed, though I have tried to get them in chronological order. Comparisons are with the show as it was before cast change, it having been in a fairly unchanged form since about October. {Spoiler - click to view}Act 1
First scene mostly the same except Freeboys playing the Warden & Warren Tony. Raul is now called ?O'Brian. Prison break scene: dogs are big cuddly toys rather than lights! Hide behind big leaves rather than desk. Mitch shot at when climbing fence. Cooper picking up Mitch is extended & incorporates material previously in their road trip scene, which has been completely cut. Cooper is a useless getaway driver as he can't drive! This replaces Sam being Mitch's getaway driver 2 years earlier - I guess one way to solve a plot point that they never got fully worked out is to cut it altogether! Cooper is no longer a fan of singalong songs. Upon arrival at the bank Everyone Else introduces the scene & main characters direct to audience. He then takes a wallet from an audience member & "reads" out details (obviously not the real ones). The person is "called" Dr Jaggers & this is picked up through the rest of the show with Sam impersonating him at the bank & him being Freeboys' sex therapist - every time this gets mentioned cast stare in direction of audience member. (This doesn't actually work out, in that Caprice thinks Sam is Dr Jaggers but still does the staring at audience member, but Mischief have never let inconsistency stop a gag with this show!) Sam & Caprice meet in the bank. He only pretends to be Dr, the Dr-lawyer-rabbi gag has totally gone. The whole scene of Caprice with the telephones & Sam having stolen her wallet has completely gone, & therefore the song "Come Softly" is no longer done, apart from briefly being played on Caprice's radio. Irving follows Caprice into the bank & after taking his cheque she shoves him in the fan closet. Rather than trying to kneel down his main trait is now instantly falling asleep. Caprice's other 2 suitors are completely gone. No Roger. Everyone Else plays the journalist Hanratty who now appears in this scene as well as Act 2. Sam no longer impersonates Smitties. Freeboys/three boys gag still the same but boys played by all 3 ensemble. New gag about Smitties coughing when Freeboys makes a mistake which ten develops into an extended bit with various people choking on grapes & Sam as "Dr" trying to pretend he knows what to do. Scene montages set to a different song, "Sh-boom", still sung by Warren. Montage scenes are in a different order. Caprice phoning in bed cut, as is disco. New bit with Ruth & Smitties having a date in a "gondola". (Does Minneapolis have gondolas?!) Flower seller is just Sam trying to buy flowers, no Warren, & no flowers are actually for sale so wreath cut. Freeboys plays Rose - think Edna in Hairspray only less convincing!! Bedroom scene has fewer changes. No interruptions by any suitors - 2 cut & Irving still in closet. Caprice still changes to a loose blouse but actually no longer needs to. Added bit with Cooper asking Mitch for a password before entering. This turns out to be Cooper's name & is subsequently referenced a couple of times in Act 2. Caprice pretending to be pregnant to smuggle stuff into bank is moved from Act 2 to just after Cooper's entrance in this scene. End re-ordered so Mitch tries to kill Warren first then Sam.
Act 2
Order switched so it opens with shortened church scene followed by 2nd phone calls scene, which now ends with a 6th caller in the form of a giant moustache held up by the other 5. The writers must be really keen on these moustaches - they've got bigger over time & now there's a 10 foot one! No 3-way fight scene for Everyone Else, obviously given omission of 2 suitors. No 3rd round of phone calls. Instead Smitties' ex-wife & her relations pop up at the bank just as he's been kissing Ruth. Bank scene not too much changed. Ruth speaks to Sam (thinking he's Freeboys) about interviewing Sam for a job at the bank & says she worries that she hasn't been a good mother & that Sam'll get into trouble. This makes Sam decide to pull out of the robbery. Fan closet shenanigans now include Irving emerging between Ruth & Smitties, having presumably got involved in the Mitch/Ruth encounter. Added bit picking up from Act 1 where Smitties is coughing at "Freeboys" but as it's Cooper he doesn't get it & does Heimlich manoevre on him. Witnessed by Hanratty as suggestive between the other office suggestiveness, when Cooper & Caprice are trying to revive Sam, & Mitch tearing off Freeboys' trousers. Also another nude portrait of Freeboys is brought on just before Hanratty storms out. Wall & vault scenes virtually unchanged. Cooper no longer sees mice in the vault & the previous instances of him doing the high-pitched voice are also gone. The messier version of Cooper's death, reintroduced at cast change, is still there. Warning to anyone in first few rows of stalls right (low numbers) you will get splattered with water & bits of what look to be red sponge. No Roger so security guard is now unnamed & highly camp & dreams about undressing Smitties. Finally get gag on Smitties name - frankly not worth the wait IMO! (Apparently this was made more of with a "Welcome Smitties" banner which then got tangled up but this has already been cut.) Guard still shot but as he's not Freeboy's nephew it makes Freeboys seem slightly less evil shooting him. Mitch now shoots Caprice rather than Sam (accidentally, intended to shoot Sam). When Warren jumps out of the window he is picked up by gulls held by Cooper (wearing angel wings) who says they are Simon & Debra. Nice back-reference but I wasn't sure if this was supposed to mean Warren actually dies, given he's seeing dead people/birds, or not. Chase scene has Sam driving rather than Caprice due to shooing swap. Includes small model car driving off small model bridge. Last scene blocking changed to take into account Caprice rather than Sam having been shot. When Mitch bursts in he shoots Sam, who falls down as if dead, before being shot by Smitties when about to shoot Caprice again. Sam seems dead for a minute but turns out he's been saved by the wallet which he then hands back to the audience member. End as per previously (though no-one bothers to bandage up Caprice's shoulder!).
Out of all the changes the one that I think is a definite improvement is giving Sam a good reason for trying to pull out of the robbery, as before it seemed he just wimped out for no real reason. The change I like the least is the 4th wall breaking & audience interaction. There is so much of that in the other 2 shows that it seems unnecessary to add any into this one too. Everyone Else's explanation seems to slow things up before getting into the bank action. Sam handing the wallet back at the end jars in an otherwise tense & emotional scene. I can't see the point of Mitch shooting Caprice rather than Sam. It makes it less tense in the next scene as to whether Mitch will shoot Caprice when he's already shot her once. I also regret losing Roger, and 2 of the 3 suitors & therefore the 3-way fight scene. Most of the rest of the changes I'm neither here nor there on. They don't make the show worse but on the other hand I can't really see that they make it better. Oh well, this is what we've now got and, the writers having now decamped to NY, it seems this is what we're going to have for a while.

Thanks very much indeed for taking the time to write such a detailed and intricate re-telling Dawnstar, I felt like I was there! Having seeing Bank Robbery with the originals only twice, but the memories still quite vivid, it was so interesting to read some of the rather extreme changes that have been made and also makes me wonder why they felt the need to implement them. Has made me very keen to head back and see it again now - almost like a different show!

Has made me very keen to head back and see it again now - almost like a different show! I too am currently wondering why they felt the need to implement some of them. This show has been changed so much that anyone who buys the script now could probably return it under the Trade Description Act! Much as I love Mischief Theatre, I don't get what they are trying to achieve with many of these latest changes when they have had a show that worked perfectly well for several months with only a few small tweaks. I doubt anyone but me noticed the inconsistences (one of which is actually still there even now: Warren says to Mitch "I was kidnapped. By you!" but he wasn't, he was kidnapped by Cooper & never meets Mitch till Act 2) and the re-writes don't seem to have been primarily aimed at solving them. Fascinating, Dawnstar. Will have to see it again myself, I think, as I hardly recognise the show, LOL. I hardly recognised some of the show & I last saw it only 3.5 weeks ago!

I wasn't intending to see this again till May but on the train from Salisbury back to London I saw on Twitter that Niall Ransome was on for Everyone Else tonight so decided to break my journey & pop in an unscheduled visit. When I arrived at 7.20 the queue to get in was right across Piccadilly Circus. The Criterion needs to sort this out, it seems to get ever longer.
When I finally got as far as the lobby I was thrilled to see that not only was Niall on but so was Sam Fogell for Warren & Jeremy Lloyd was back in his old role of Smitties (Shuck), the latter 2 being 2nd covers. A combination of holidays, illness & injuries meant they were decidedly short of cast. Since there were no ensemble men available Gareth Tempest & Miles Yekkini had to play 2 of the 3 bank clerks (can't cut tracks as the 3 boys/Freeboys gag depends on there being 3 of them) so it looked like Mitch & Cooper were infiltrating the bank undercover!
I particularly loved seeing Jeremy back in his old role (well, sort of, given all the rewrites!). Frankly he might as well have been allowed to stick to that role full time as I didn't think he looked too young playing opposite Tania Mathurian. Sam Fogell did a good job as Warren, especially as I think it was his first show on, but he did look too young to convince as a 67 year old. Niall Ransome in his various roles was particularly good as the camp security guard, which I was rather expecting having seen him play an ever camper character in a Lights! Camera! Improvise! a couple of years ago.
I thought the rest of the cast were generally stronger than when I saw them previously, having had nearly 2 months more to bed in. I thought there were a few minor changes but I'm not sure if there actually were or if it was just things I'd forgotten amidst the myriad of changes last time (see above).

Reading the Audience Participation thread reminded me of a something I was wondering about this production - I'll put it in a spoiler just in case! So how much of the wallet debacle is scripted? The person who handed their wallet up when I saw the show didn't seem like a plant, and when they were going through the contents of the wallet it didn't seem scripted, but then there were so many references back to it in the show that I figure there must be some level of scripting there? Is the person indeed a plant, or do they genuinely search some random person's wallet but always say the same name so that it matches the script?

{Spoiler - click to view} The person isn't a plant but the rest is scripted. They switch wallets early on in the process from the one they have just taken to a prop one.

Yet more re-writes, as of this week. It's kind of confusing when you can see a show 2 weeks running (I'm currently working my way through seeing all the understudies) and find it's changed in such a short space of time. Basically they've reduced the sex therapist mentions back to how they were originally & the security guard is no longer camp & his dream has gone back to how it was originally but still featuring Smitties rather than Freeboys. The net result of the latter is that the gag on Smitties name has disappeared so really they needn't have bothered re-naming him in the first place! The audience interaction is also reduced. For the first time I managed to be in my seat early enough to spot the planted wallet being given to an audience member. I was slightly wrong in my spoiler-tagged post above: the wallet is given to an audience member beforehand rather than being swapped as it is handed over, as I originally thought. ETA Apparently there are more changes (and maybe some reversions) in the pipeline...

Just a heads-up in case anyone was thinking of seeing TCAABR next week, I see on the Criterion's website that the Wednesday 21st & Thursday 22nd shows are listed as cancelled. Since the next round of changes are due next week, I can only guess they have decided they'll need extra rehearsal time.

So...(stupid question?)why are they continually making changes to this play? It's not like it had poor reviews when it opened. It sounds like a completely different piece to the one I saw soon after it opened. I have never come across such a re-working of a play during a run.

Since the next round of changes are due next week, I can only guess they have decided they'll need extra rehearsal time. More changes?! Will this be the 3rd version of the show? I believe from what I have heard that many of this round of changes will be reversions back to what the show was like prior to cast change. I think it's way beyond the 3rd version already. There have been so many changes that it's hard to remember them all but IIRC we've had: Start of previews Changes during previews including rewritten opening scene (this is the version in the published script - mostly!) May-July 16 several large changes & a lot of minor ones gradually fed in Mid September 16 changes following the 2 week break February 17 changes for new cast (I didn't see this stage) March 17 some of the changes for the new cast had already been dropped/changed back Mid April 17 changes mostly reducing the amount of audience participation & cleaning up the script a bit - apparently there had been complaints! June 17 to be seen... So...(stupid question?)why are they continually making changes to this play? It's not like it had poor reviews when it opened. It sounds like a completely different piece to the one I saw soon after it opened. I have never come across such a re-working of a play during a run. In a lot of places it is a completely different piece. Anyone buying the script now expecting to read what they've just seen on stage could probably sue under the Trade Descriptions Act! As for why, you'd have to ask the writers for a definitive answer but from what I've picked up from other people involved in the production they (the writers) still feel it could be improved. It is interesting that TCAABR has had so many more changes compared to the Goes Wrong shows. TPTGW had the big change from a 1 act to a 2 act play but since then has barely changed script-wise & PPGW has had very few changes right from the start. I wonder if it's because TCAABR opened "cold" in the West End whereas the other 2 started as fringe pieces so they would have had more time to tweak them with less observation. ETA Just spotted this on Twitter. I'd be fascinated to know which of the many versions of the script they're using!

So, another round of changes have gone in as of yesterday. I'd say about 80-90% of the changes that were done for cast change have now reverted back to the previous version of the show.
Opening scene & Mitch & Cooper's getaway are still as they have been since cast change.
The whole audience interaction with the wallet is gone. Yay!
The first bank scene is almost entirely back to how it was before cast change, except Sam isn't Mitch's useless getaway driver as that plot point mercifully remains in abeyance (they never got it to work out).
Roger Freeboys is back! Yay again!
Caprice's phone scene is back. Yay for the 3rd time!
After that it gets really confusing because the montage scene has pretty much reverted back to how it was pre-cast change but it's set to the song that's been used post-cast change. It sounded to my ears like the cast were having to do more live backing vocals than usual so I do wonder if they didn't have time to re-record everything! Mitch & Cooper's road trip is shortened, since some of it's now in their getaway scene, and Tony from the opening scene briefly pops up, which has not happened before.
The bedroom scene is mostly back to pre-cast change, with Caprice's 3 suitors making their brief appearances, but Cooper's password scene & the fake pregnancy bump are still in from post-cast change. The Cooper password references are kept throughout the show & the showtunes & animal voices from pre-cast change have not reappeared.
The opening of Act 2 has mostly reverted to how it was pre-cast change but Everyone Else's 3-way fight is not back in. Instead we get a short monologue from Irving (the elderly suitor). An unfortunate result of this scene changing back is that we now get Caprice protesting about the fake pregnancy bump twice over so it'll be interesting to see if that gets tidied up or not.
The 2nd bank scene is mostly back to pre-cast change except they have kept Sam & Ruth's dialogue about her being a bad mother & Cooper's quick change. Since those were 2 of the changes that I thought were an improvement it's good to see they are still in. I confess to being a bit sorry that the 2nd painting of Freeboys no longer makes an appearance.
Freeboys now kills his nephew again rather than a random security guard.
At the end of the robbery it is back to pre-cast change with Sam getting shot rather than Caprice & this obviously carries through to the car chase (toy car & bridge removed) & the last scene.
Warren still dies & meets Simon, Deborah & Cooper as per post-cast change.
The last scene is now back to pre-cast change so Sam being shot & saved by the wallet is out.
And finally, Officer Randall Shuck has returned. No more Officer Tom Smitties.
There's probably some more things that I've missed but this show is SO confusing! Overall I'm very happy with this round of changes. I nearly cried with joy 3 times in Act 1! I didn't know quite how much I'd missed the previous version of the show till I got it mostly back again. Now, if only they'd reinstate the 3-way fight...

A return visit to this yesterday afternoon and just as funny and vibrant as first time around. The chap playing Sam ( I don't have my programme with me to name him ) was a real stand out and star of the future.

The chap playing Sam ( I don't have my programme with me to name him ) Presumably Steffan Lloyd-Evans, unless there was any unscheduled understudy action. Yes, he is very good, and I say that as someone who always finds Dave Hearn a hard act to follow.
