I’m really intrigued by this musical! I’m a little surprised it’s debuting in the west end tho, as I thought all the chat was that it was debut on broadway! I hope we get to hear some snippets soon. I think it’s likely CHF, given her schedule, will be playing Cinderella, which is okay with me as I do think she’s super talented!

Also the Gillian Lynne Theatre will be closed for a refurb till Cinderella opens, according to Baz x

So Cinderella dress is a spray painted pink heart. Thinking its being updated to a modernish time.
Pink heart would suggest gay/lesbian story line seeing dress is usually blue.
Not certain about the er yet.
This may now be my most anticipated opening of 2020.
I also get to tick Gillian Lynne off my list of unvisited theatres.

This is a strange marketing campaign. Ummm. What’s happening in this poster? Looks like she's got a very saggy bottom! I think the logo is poor as too much is going on. One bit of spray paint would be much stronger |

Apologies to Dewynters who I wrongly assumed designed all of ALW’s stuff.
Of course, this is exactly what we should be focussing on here...

Was it really Dewynters who came up with that appallingly amateurish poster? I find it difficult to believe that the company who have previously done such beautiful artwork could come up with that piece of crap. Cameron Mackintosh would have never sanctioned something as awful as that.
The rubbish artwork aside, this show doesn't fill me with much confidence, though I will go and see it. The last time David Zippel contributed lyrics to a Lloyd Webber show, they were abysmal (The Woman in White), and I will never understand why anyone hires Laurence Connor other than to tell him what to do. If ALW is serious about making groundbreaking theatre again that can also be successful commercially, then he needs a director on the level of Hal Prince or Trevor Nunn. There is no shortage of young and talented directors in Britain right now. Laurence Connor is not one of them.

Ahh well this is good news.
Much more interesting than the poster, do we think the staging could make use of the Gillian Lynne's versatility and not use the proscenium arch format? I have always felt that theatre has really not been used to it's full potential since Cats and would love something more immersive.
Great they are doing a refurb too.

Just playing devil's advocate - in fairness the vast majority of initial artwork for shows in the last decade gets slated on here!
(Not commenting on the artwork or artwork of other shows in general - but the default response is generally negative).

I am always happy to see anything new, and a different take on things! I think Emerald Fennell is a strong choice for the book, as shes really come through in the past few years, so I think it will be really interesting to see what spin/angle she can put on this classic tale.

Stephen Ward ... i didn't think it was as bad as everyone else did. I really liked it. Wasn't that brilliantly staged, but I still listen to the cast album. Better than the TV series, I feel. Me too; very much underrated. The second half is problematic as I think the police interviews and court case drag on and are hard to set to music - would love to see a slightly re-written version. ALW's shortest West End run since Jeeves in the 1970s but think was a personal project which he knew would not have mass (/any tourist) appeal. Would have worked better not in a traditional West End house I think. Also the set looked a bit cheap in a big theatre. Intimate would have been better. Cinderella I think will be a bit more lavish. |
