You ‘give up’? What on Earth do you ‘give up’ about?

I really don't see the need for this 'plot twist' let alone ANOTHER version of Cinderella! Thought ALW might've had something a bit more exciting in mind.

"A five-piece band accompanied the actors, but through Lloyd Webber’s state-of-the-art system, it “sounded like a 50-piece orchestra,” a source says."

Rodgers and Hammerstein have given us the only Cinderella musical we need.
However...
It's rather off topic, but I loved the way Mattel's Ever After High handled Cinderella. The basis of the EAH concept is that all fairy tales have to be kept alive by each new generation reenacting the story. When you put Cinderella's story on repeat like that it becomes a work of nightmare. Each young Cinderella grows up knowing that eventually her parents must abandon her to live a life of servitude with an evil stepmother. Sure, she gets rescued, but she in turn is now responsible for abandoning her own daughter to the same miserable fate. So congratulations, Cinders: everyone you love will be taken from you, and yours is supposed to be one of the happy stories.
Now that's a variation on Cinderella that might make a good musical, providing parents were warned "Don't bring your children unless you want them to never sleep again".

Gut tells me this is more likely to pop up in the US than UK once it's fleshed out.

The whole thing smacks of everyone in the room being all smug that they are watching something private and exclusive. I’ve done it myself- watched a workshop of something and it’s been maaaarvellous and aren’t we all pleased with ourselves.. and then if it makes it on stage it’s crap. Will reserve any excitement about this as it sounds so dull.

I rolled my eyes at this bit too .... ”The Broadway VIPs are eager to meet Fennell, who’ll play Camilla Parker Bowles on the next season of “The Crown.” She’s so hot right now that when some of the New Yorkers got off the plane Thursday morning, they saw her on the front page of the Times of London.” 🙄

If they were talking about Phoebe Waller Bridge - I’d get it. But this is just waffle. He must be being paid to amp up the coverage for this show.

There’s already a Cinderella musical that we all know!!! I wish he would have JUST written a story and NOT called it Cinderella. Bit of a cheat....

You ‘give up’? What on Earth do you ‘give up’ about? Turning a classic story into a gay romp? I’m gay and also over it!

I mean if CHF keeps the role of Cinderella going forward she’s pretty much sorted for life with musicals, given her close relationship with Cameron Mackintosh, and now ALW 😆

God I hope this opens in a lavish production in the West End first! Dream on! How so? Only School of Rock and Jesus Christ Superstar didn't open first in the West End. And most original ALW productions with a few exceptions (e.g. Stephen Ward) have been lavish.

The cast looks great with Ruthie and Rebecca and Carrie! We need more British musical theatre. Hope the music is good!

From a few articles I read it was full of Broadway theatre owners/corporations. Not to say it won't open here first, but why wouldn't they pump they're money into it and get it straight on Broadway?
One even mentioned some Netflix people were in; wouldn't that would be a waste

If ALW and co are smart they will open it in the West End first. Don’t forget Broadway just had a big lavish Cinderella production a few years back with Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana. Plus, Brittney Spear’s jukebox musical about Cinderella is heading to Broadway as well, and I think we all know Spears will sell better with the general audience than ALW.

Am a bit worried that after the lukewarm reception of Love Never Dies and Stephen Ward in London followed by the success of School of Rock on Broadway he is tempted to take this there first; hence my initial post (also why were all the Broadway people invited to The Other Palace?) Over the years though London has been kinder to ALW than Broadway a million times over - really hope he remembers that! And ALW has himself repeatedly said in the past that the economics of opening a show and keeping it running in London are infinitely preferable to NYC. Plus it's a new British musical and Heaven knows, that's what the West End DESPERATELY needs!
