I would love to see a musical revival of this!!
If she agreed to it, which she 99% chance wouldn't, Christine Baranaki would be an amazing Mrs Lovett or Tracey Ullman!
However, more realistically, I think Beverley Knight would be amazing in the role! She has the voice, acting skills and personality to create the role her own! I'd love to see her in a Sonheim!

Christine Baranski has played Lovett. I believe she played opposite Kelsey Grammar at one point.
Beverley Knight has a voice, and a superior one at it, but NOT for this! She might be a decent Witch for Into the Woods but this is just wrong for her. And no, she actually can't act to save her life. Whoever thinks she can act has clearly had too much of the kool-aid.

KELSEY GRAMMER PLAYED SWEENEY TODD!?! Please tell me your not joking, that would be dream casting for me. Beverley would be a great Witch actually. True about her acting though, it is quite wooden, but there's no denying her great voice!

Yeah Christine Baranski is amazing. Beverley is great at all things musical theatre! She's amazing at all of it! Yeah I agree she would be a good witch for Into the Woods, that would be a good revival too. But Beverley is amazing at acting, did you see her in Memphis and The Bodyguard?! She was made for the role in Memphis

YAS Found a bit of his performance on Youtube, couldn't take him being a murderer seriously, all I could think was 'FRASIER!'

Met her at the Olivier's, she is a lovely person! BTW, Just out of curiosity, did you start this thread after seeing my discussion with BurlyBear in another thread?

I think we can level with each other and disagree on her being amazing at "acting". I don't mind her in these type of shows or roles. I saw her in them (Bodyguard several times) and thought she was fabulous in Cats (actually, of all the acting she did in these three shows, I thought she was most convincing as a feline). No dispute on her singing. But Beverley is okay for a certain type of musical. Sondheim is just not her "type" of show. Like I said I think she'd be okay as The Witch because it requires that certain type of diva flair and overstated glamour. Heck, she can do some light modulation and riffing and it still would work. Sweeney Todd, not so much. It's a role that needs to be given to a very capable actress. I think Bernadette Peters would deserve this if it gets a major production pretty much anywhere, it seems not right that she hasn't done it yet given that she is pretty much the de facto female interpreter of his work. But I digress..
Beverley is likeable, great beltress and has great presence, but this is just not her league.
Speaking of which is anyone going to her Palladium show? I have a sh*tty ticket in the stalls booked. When is her album out?

Now, I don't think you can beat Imelda Staunton! How about Tracie Bennett? She reminds me of Imelda Staunton a little bit. I think Mrs Lovett is quite a funny character and you need that bubbly personality to play it and I think Beverley has that! I know what you mean about not being her type of show though but I think she's gonna be great in The Bodyguard again this year. I think considering she's doing more musical theatre her acting will improve, but I think it's fine now! Haha. Speaking of Into the Woods, it'll be nice to see a huge revival of that too!

I don't think we'll be seeing a revival any time soon. After last year we had the pie shop version and the London Coliseum version with Bryn Terfel and Emma Thompson (which was absolutely mesmerising btw, my fourth favourite show of all time) it may be a few years before another Sweeney.

Upon reading your post, I was going to write back Imelda Staunton would be a GREAT idea. And then I remembered...I feel like I'm clearly experiencing theatre amnesia. First I have to be reminded on every Dreamgirls page that Amber Riley is 30, and now I forget that Imelda did play Lovett.

I'd love to see a huge musical revival though like the 2012 version. Unlike the semi stage productions last year. But I agree it will be a few more years, who know who could produce it?!

When she does a Sondheim, it's always a limited season because of the power and determination you need to play a role like she does! I cant ant wait for Dreamgirls with Amber Riley!

I also agree, I don't think we will have another Sweeney anytime soon. But when we do, can we have a nice fully-staged version with proper West End actor/singers who can fully do justice to the roles.
Hadley Fraser and Jenna Russell anyone? Pretty please...

I'm sure there'll be a regional production before then, maybe even one as good as the WYP one which transferred to Manchester and was brilliant.

Sweeney is done to death (no pun intended!). Can't we have some more Sondheim's please
I've only seen two so far this year (I have Woods booked for June) and I'm already getting the shakes
I vote for Company, Frogs and Evening Primrose. Although the latter would be short evening, perhaps a mini concert for the first act

Looks like a coproduction with the Mercury Colchester. www.derbytheatre.co.uk/sweeney-todd-demon-barber-fleet-street-musical-thriller

For me, there will be no greater performances than Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton in Chichester (not just for Sweeney, but maybe musical theatre in general!). Maybe they were what spoiled the Welsh National Opera production last November for me.
Have just been listening to the OBCR however, after listening to the bonus track, I think Julie Andrews would have made a good and interesting Mrs. Lovett back in the day!
I can't see another West End production happening for a while though, unless the WNO production goes back to a smaller orchestra with a musical theatre cast with a star Sweeney and Lovett but I can't think who. Or who knows? Maybe this Derby/Colchester version may be good.
I'm actually more surprised that there hasn't been a production on Broadway since the John Doyle version in 2005.

Another revival?! This is one of the most commonly remounted shows in recent years!
