I've never read the original book, but I've just found this on the original films wikipeida page, is this true? If so, wow:
"In the original Bradford Ropes' novel Julian and Billy are lovers. Since same-sex relationships were unacceptable in films by the moral standards of the era, the film substituted a romance between Billy and Peggy"

In the novel, Billy and Julian always have adjacent rooms with a connecting door and Billy is often referred to as Julian's "mistress" by some of the other chorus boys. Also in the novel, Billy pushes Peggy forward as the star partly because he thinks she's talented and because she has been nice to him and treated him "normally" but also to use her as a smokescreen so that he can continue his dalliance with Julian. In the novel Dorothy has a fondness for being "friendly" with many a gentleman or two and is a bit of a lush, hence the fall. I don't believe that the novel was ever reissued after the film was a success and the screenplay for the film was cleaned up massively (of course) so that no hint of homosexuality was left. It's not a great book in all honesty. You can often find an old copy in a library somewhere (that's where I read it many years ago) and sometimes copies gone on sale on eBay but often for huge prices ($1,000 and the like). |

Well damn, who woulda thought?! I always had my suspicions about Billy maybe being gay, but not Julian. Thats kinda cute though, I wish that the film kept an element of the gays, but its of its time I guess. Even the musical has an element of gay in my opinion, especially with some of those Ensemble boys so at least these days its more evident! |

On her agent's site it says she's second cover Dorothy Brock. Most bizarre. She was several years below Clare Halse at ArtsEd.

I usually just read the forum but register tonight to tell you all my experience, my bf and I were at the theatre tonight.
Lulu was awful, in every way, Ashley Day just ok and Matthew Goodgame lacking the charm that Norman Bowman had in abundance.
The ensemble was also somewhat affected by the inclusion of the new members.
This was my 24rd visit and will be the last one for at least 16 weeks, left at the interval because it was unbearable,125 quid for two tickets to see that, I feel robbed
