Very fortunate to see this on a comp tonight. It just gets better and better every time. CJ was on as Ms Brock - she took some getting used to as Sheena's portrayal is so engraved in my mind from my previous 5 visits, but I warmed to her and in the end really liked her performance. I think I preferred her vocally, though I found Sheena more believable overall. Undertsudies also on for Billy and Pat - neither as strong as their respective leads but both absolutely fine. Tom Lister still sounded a bit poorly - he had his glass of water just before the 42nd Street reprise (has he always had that? I've never noticed before), but barring a few slightly hoarse moments he sounded fine. Chris Howell was Chris Howell - that's all I'll say, see danieljohnson14's posts for more if you must Clare is an absolute superstar! She owns that stage and I really hope she wins the award(s) that she so deserves, and that this show springboards her to more success in the future. Tonight was a bad night to judge success based on how busy it was as it's a trade night, but I hear that the show is doing really well which makes me so happy. We whinge and moan all day about crappy jukebox musicals and overpriced shows with poor production values clogging up the West End - its SO good to see a real show on a huge scale, produced as musicals should be produced, getting the success it so rightly deserves. Right, I'm gushing. Must stop. I wonder...if the show keeps packing in the audiences and isn't ready to close in December 2018 (or whenever RUG decide they want to start the refurb), do we think they'll boot them out to make sure the theatre is ready for Frozen, or let it keep running and risk missing out on Frozen/not doing the refurb?

daniel I've heard that the refurb now has an open-ended start to fit in with whenever 42nd Street wants to close. But in terms of Frozen, its difficult to judge.

It's only January so I imagine they'll decide in six-seven months rather than now.

Finally saw this the other day. It is rather good isn't it? Obviously dated but still a joy to watch. Such a great thing to have such a large cast and orchestra.

It would be madness, wouldn't it, to close a family-friendly musical like 42nd Street in December, just as the entire building industry closes down for a fortnight? If it has to close, surely much more sensible to close in January 2019.

It will be telling come Autumn for sure what is to happen, but currently from what I have heard, the refurb hasn't been set in stone yet for a date despite being previously reported because of the popularity growth in the show. They could take it through 2019 and close it Autumn 2019 ahead of a 2020 refurb. This coming year will be, like daniel has said previously, very telling as to the future of the show.

If the actual last night gets put any further away my attendance will probably have to be a posthumous one – but at least I will get in free!

I guess how well the audience responds to the new cast will have an impact. Will be interesting to see who is cast, although with such a big ensemble this is one of those shows where the show is bigger than individual cast members.

We'll have none of that talk tonyloco. If nothing else, it gives you something to hang around for!

Might be wrong but I have a feeling a "name" will take over from Sheena Easton.

Not very likely however given her 33 date 20th Anniversary tour. She would be great in the part and vocally superb however she will not be available.

And the fact she has another series of Cruising with Jane McDonald and Jane and Friends for Channel 5.

Well if they decide to go with a "name" for Julian instead, which opens up to more actors I suppose, then if they go for a theatre name for Dorothy's role, I have said it since the show opened, Louise Dearman is perfect for it. A tad young bit age her up a notch and shes good to go! She'd kill it vocally!

Guardian Review of Jane MaccyD in Romeo and Juliet The Musical
“There is one really decent singer: Jane McDonald, who plays the nurse. Alas, she can sing but she sure can't act.”

Maybe they could get Catherine Zeta Jones. After all she was in the original London production. I think it will be someone not from a musical theatre background

They approached CZJ to open the show, but she declined. Don't think she'll step in as a replacement tbh
