There are mics buried at the front of the stage, surely?

I think that any forum member who has sat in the front row to see this show, which is basically all of us, will confirm it's not click tracked. That's the whole point. We were front row balcony and as it was my second time I noticed the tap sound was exactly the same level. How would they microphone the feet? Hm... Surely the sound wouldn't carry? I *think* - and don't quote me on this - that there was a forum member or two who said they noticed that there actually were small mics on the tap shoes, or around the foot area. Could be wrong/a joke of course, but I've no idea. But yes, BB is right in that there will be mics all over the stage, especially floor level and at the front, to pic up all sounds so it can be mixed evenly across all levels, otherwise the experience will be quite dampened for a large amount of audience members! I have every confidence there is no tap click track, in fact you only have to watch the rehearsal videos they posted before opening to see!

I sat in the front row & could see microphone cords running down the girls legs under their tights.

I sat in the centre of the second row and remember initially thinking that a click track was being used. I think the problem I had was that the tap sound is being over amplified. I see the foot tap, but I hear quite a loud tap sound, so the visual information does not match the aural information, so to me it just did not seem right. It is all a matter of perception so I suspect will be noticeable to some people more than others.
Which reminds me. A little while ago I was lucky enough to get tickets for a BBC recording of 'Friday Night Is Music Night remembers George Gershwin'. In the middle of one of the numbers there was tap dancing - but no dancers. Two of the percussionists were using foot shaped blocks to 'tap' onto vertical boards. Quite effective and (to me) a more realistic sound than 42nd Street manages.

Can confirm (as others already have) that the taps are wired for sound!

Concerns such as click-tracking (haven't a clue) are one reason why having little knowledge of MT in general and shows in particular can enhance your enjoyment. Now I had better run for cover before all the aficionados lambast me...

Well here's one thing. Phantom of the Opera song is ALSO click tracked as were the kids in Kenwright's Whistle Down The Wind that toured on and off for ten years. Countless other shows do it in various parts of the show too. It's practical for many reasons - in Phantom's case - the leading actors are both running around the stage on different levels (also using different chorus members dressed up as the characters!)
In regards to 42nd Street I really hope it isn't recorded....

Yes there is tiny little microphone like the ones you usually see on people's forehead
except its under the tights, positioned just above the ankle

Proud of what? An adult rational conversation about sound and creativity in modern day theatre. Having worked with cables and sound I question how dancers could in fact dance with cables down their legs. It's a really interesting question and indeed subject!

They definitely do and its very clear to see from the front so they seem to manage just fine.

It's not at all unusual... have seen it many times. And if they can perform with a mic cable up their back and through their hair, I don't see why under their tights should be a problem

To add more "evidence" to the mix: a friend and I got rush seats tonight (row K stalls, almost perfect but for the poor rake) and in one scene we could hear the taps as one of the actresses walked across the stage, like the mic on them hadn't been turned off.
As far as the show itself - WOW. Loved it.

Another vote for C. It's fine. The only thing I would say about those front rows in the stalls is that because there's no rake (ooh, get me! Move over theatremonkey its TheatreBeaR time!) your view of the cast's feet is rather dependant on how tall you are and who is in front of you. Not a problem right at the very front of course but I was in D and despite being 6'3 had to move my head from side to side a bit. I think a shorty would struggle. I was surprised at the stingy legroom on the aisle in the centre stalls too, considering the size of the theatre. But it zipped by so fast it wasnt really a problem. One of my fave bits and there were so many that everyone has already mentioned, but right at the very end after the bows when they do that final tap sequence and they line up not across the stage but up and down stage showing how deep and bloody enourmous that stage is. Fantastic. I am not going to let last nights horrors tarnish my memory of this brilliant spectacle.

There are so many things on in London But all I can think about is seeing 42nd st Again and again and again I agree. Seen An American in Paris, Half a Sixpence, and all the 'posh' stuff at NT and ROH but for sheer entertainment and life enhancing joy, 42nd Street knocks spots off all of them.

I sat in the front row & could see microphone cords running down the girls legs under their tights. Ah, I did wonder, when I visited one morning before previews, why there was a huge line of "qualified sound technicians" forming an orderly queue under the "sound team wanted" notice. And all male... That genuinely a thing? They just post a notice on the theatre during previews for crew? odd.
