Saw the matinee today. I really liked the show. But I didn't fall in love with it. The majority of the cast is great. I especially loved Stuart Neal and Clare Halse. Norman Bowman is painfully underused. And it surely is a spectacle: The set, the costumes, the tapping and the sheer amount of people on stage. It is a great show, no doubt about it. But it doesn't touch my heart (like American in Paris does, for example).
That said I definitely will be back in the summer to catch Norman Bowman as Julian Marsh.

That said I definitely will be back in the summer to catch Norman Bowman as Julian Marsh. Me too (if my schedule stays as it currently is (unlikely) I might actually be able to go to one of them). I completely agree that he's underused, such a small role. Unfortunately Philip Bertioli will probably be playing Pat in those shows and he's the ensemble member I ended up watching the most. If only he could be Billy when Norman is Julian, that'd be perfect!

and would you go to all the trouble, expense and controversy of getting a mink coat and then dyeing it scarlet? As Joyce Grenfell said in her skit about a crafty Women's Institute member applying gold paint to acorns... "we like to take what mother nature provides and make it even more beautiful"

did anyone happen to catch C J Johnson as Dorothy Brock last night ? Was that the first time Sheena Easton has called out of the show?

did anyone happen to catch C J Johnson as Dorothy Brock last night ? I guess I must have done without realising (excuse my ignorance) - probably tells you everything you need to know about how good she was. The show was amazing.

Because the 3rd preview was so special and felt increidble, thimk i'll wait for when they start discounting to see it again. It is a huge barn though, so I imagine after Summer when all the tourists are out they may have to shell some out to make it to winter, then I will go.

You should have publicly shamed them. That is unacceptable behaviour. And illegal. even the selfish audience member in front row of stalls who recorded most of finale 😡 couldn't detract from the gloriousness of this production. Wow ... what an ensemble 👏👏👏

Great seats too

did anyone happen to catch C J Johnson as Dorothy Brock last night ? Having seen both - Sheena has a richer voice but CJ acted the role well - both have equal worth to see.

^Not on a regular basis, and certainly not at weekends. Great seat, though, if you can get them at the price. I've had those £15 side stalls day seats on a Friday night and Saturday night. Had to specifically ask for them though, as they weren't keen to sell anything less than full price.

Sheena Easton was very good. The dancing was very good. The rest of this show consists of lots of Americans shouting, is thin on plot and has no characters anyone really cares about.

Half way the first act I was really thinking that the book of this musical was as thin as Naomi Campbell's waist in the 90's, but then during ''Dames'', Billy literally sangs ''but who cares if there's a plot or not, when they've got a lot of dames'' and you realize that the show is self-indulgent about this and has to enjoy the show as it is, and oh my, it's a hell of a show!
It's theatre as glamour in its best, the costumes, the stage, the incredible orchestra, the ENSEMBLE, I mean, just the definition of entertaining. The cast barely have real characters but they workd their a** off to bring you the best extravaganza experience possible and they don't fail at all. Clare Halse was a completely stand out, not only she's charming, charismatic and understands Peggy completely, she sure can tap!
It was an incredible night (in an amazing seat for 15 pounds lol) that really shows what musical theater is known for: escapism. I never wanted to end, just thrilling.

Made my second trip tonight - this time from the end of the front row - and just fell even more in love with the show. It's pure joy, and seeing all those smiling faces up close was just so infectious! There was a show stop mid-Act Two where CJ Johnson took over from Sheena Easton - she only went on for About A Quarter To Nine but her voice was lovely, it would be interesting to see her do a whole show as Dorothy Brock.
I have a feeling I'm going to be making many visits to Drury Lane while this show is in town...

Well I wasn't timing it but I think it was only about 10/15 mins. I got out of the theatre at about 22:20 so overrunning by 10/15 mins sounds about right. When the curtain came down, we got an announcement saying the show was being stopped for technical reasons, then a bit later later there was an announcement that CJ Johnson would be playing Dorothy Brock due to the indisposition of Sheena Easton and the performance would be resuming soon. Curtain went up again a few mins later.

I for one had a lovely time at 42nd Street.
There's quite the contrast between the positive reviews at this end of this thread, and the largely "meh" reactions to the announcement of the show. Clicking back to the first couple of pages, you see "However, times have changed and this will stuggle with no doubt pared down sets, ensemble and band. Without some big names this is going to struggle", "I (like I guess a lot of people on here) will be very surprised if it manages to run for long", "I have absolutely no interest in this show, so they'd need some stellar casting to get me into the Drury Lane " & "Not convinced that will be able to fill that theatre!"

I saw 42nd street on the night of the second preview, granted I was up in the first row of the balcony and really wouldn't mind going back and seeing it from near the front of the stalls. I might call in later in May and see if they'll let me buy a day ticket - maybe by then they'll have a proper policy for them?
