Box office not as hot as we need it 🤗 You need to ask Gary Barlow to knock up a few new songs. God He needs to sort his own show out first

Great letter in tonight's ES in reply to Fiona Mountford's review. It says. "yet Fiona Mountford gave it only 3 stars because she felt that despite the tapping her spirit began to flag. It was also Ms Mountford who got a headache from watching Ragtime as there were too many songs in it. Tap dancing in a musical? Singing in a musical? Whatever next - a rapping Hamilton?

Only 4 stars?
I had a repeat viewing from the front row on Friday evening. The show was just as fabulous on second viewing and Sheena Easton much stronger in the diva acting than she was at the first preview performance.
However, the audience were very subdued I thought in comparison to that first performance where from the moment the curtain rose on those dancing feet applause erupted throughout the numbers not waiting until the end to applaud when they then went wild.
The audience on Friday evening felt very difficult to please. Applause at the end of numbers but nothing wild. A standing ovation right at the end of the bows but not before. It seemed a case of "I've worked hard all week and I'm knackered and these seats have cost a fortune - so entertain me!"
On the way out I heard remarks such as " that was better than I thought it would be" and "it must cost a fortune to stage" and "it was alright - I enjoyed it", but not the raves the first night audience were giving it. I did think what does a cast and production have to do? If I had directed or produced this I would be disappointed with 4 stars.
I really do hope this is a massive hit - it deserves to be!

I did think what does a cast and production have to do? They could have reimagined it. But instead they polished a turd.

I think that a first preview for a show will probably be booked by people who are theatre fans and/or friends & fans of the cast. Therefore they're likely to be more enthusiastic than a "regular" audience.

Lots of applause but no standing ovation until the end and then only a few in stalls. More in dress. Strange as I've seen shows not half as good as this and everyone on their feet.

I thought reviews had little or no bearing on ticket sales these days?
Or is that just for shows we don't have a financial stake in?
