Saw this last night and I was not impressed. Sure the cast is great and I'd like to see Tutty again. I found the book to be plodding and the score in the 2nd half was poor. Such a shame as mental health deserves much better.

I agree with your point about the score in the second act. It felt very much the same throughout. Pacing was definitely an issue too.

I'm glad it wasn't just me. I'm guessing the film is tighter? (and hopefully has less songs!)

The film cuts at least two songs from the second half, 'To Break In A Glove' (Connor's dad) and 'Good For You' (Evan's mum).

Well I saw this on Broadway with Ben Platt and I can only say the show here is just as good if not better. An incredible piece of art and an amazing ensemble of actors. Woke people complaining about the flawed characters in the film version and then trying to now think the show is bad be damned. You would struggle to find a show this good that originated in England and what Michael Greif manages to get from these actors is pure genius. We need him to direct a production of next to normal in the West End ASAP. People are flawed and people make bad choices. It’s why the show is so good.

Looking for a bit of advice on TodayTix Rush for this.
We were supposed to be at a Jessie Ware gig tomorrow night but it's another victim of Covid. We don't want to sit at home being depressed about it and would like to see a show. Are the Rush tickets basically impossible to get hold of?
There's plenty of regular tickets available as a backup but would obviously rather pay less if we can.

Sometimes I look out of mild curiosity (at various shows) just in case I decide to jump on the train down after work, and I've always had something come up for this, so based on that I'd say your chances are pretty good. I think they're £30 rather than the usual £25 though 😁

The two guys next to me also got them on rush too. I was happy with my seat in terms of view.

I got J22,23 in the stalls. Delighted with those for the price. Excited to finally see this show. Some of the tracks from the OBC recording have been a staple for years at this point and I've liked what I've seen of Sam Tutty in the role.

Sam Tutty is brilliant in this. I don't think I realised how good he was, just how much he was doing physically for the role, until he came out as himself for the curtain call.

Second time seeing this (first in Dec 2019), first time with Sam Tutty as the lead. What a great performance - very believable and a voice which sometimes seemed fragile (but in a good way reflecting his character) but hit all the notes.
Rare to see a musical where the acting from the lead really takes centre stage so convincingly. Excellent, and yes, tearful.

Well I FINALLY saw this show on Monday evening and it didn't disappoint.
I was gutted when the lights came up that Sam Tutty was off, after having checked on the website and not seeing any indication he would be off. Marcus Harman was in the role and, once I got over the initial disappointment, I really enjoyed his performance. It's such a vocally demanding role and, despite reservations he was maybe trying to sing some of the score like Ben Platt, he was note perfect. I'm not convinced it's quite as comfortable and effortless for him as it should be, but he's not doing it night after night. I thought his acting was superb and he really took us on a very powerful emotional journey. I will definitely go again on a Rush ticket to see Sam though.
I hadn't realised before how small the company was. It's so small for a big hit musical! It did make me think there must be pre-recorded vocals on track for You Will Be Found? Does anyone know if there is?
The entire cast were excellent but special shout out to Lauren Ward as Cynthia Murphy, who I think has a big job to go there emotionally every night. I've seen her in quite a few shows recently - Caroline, Or Change, Heathers etc and she's reliably great. Rebecca McKinnis was great, if just playing the same character as her Jamie character, but with an American accent! Lucy Andersen as Zoe and Jack Loxton as Jared were also particularly good. My bf loved Rupert Young's voice, but "To Break In A Glove" is a bit of a stinker really.
I agree with some of the comments about the pacing of the second act which was a bit light on tunes, though Words Fail was an emotional rollercoaster. I do think they could have avoided some of the criticism the title character has attracted by exploring better the fallout of what he's done as well. It's wrapped up too neatly and cleanly and it just seems like a missed opportunity in a dramatic sense. We know at that point that Evan has been suicidal himself, so it would be good to understand how he handled hitting rock bottom and surviving.
I thought You Will Be Found was theatrical magic. A classic for the ages. It's a song that meant a lot to me during lockdown and it's such a powerful moment in the context of the show.
It's a 4 star show rather than a 5 star for me, but it's an excellent exploration of a difficult, relevant topic. Some great songs, some excellent performances all added together make a great night at the theatre.

Craig - when I originally saw this in 2019, Marcus Harman was Evan. I knew he’d be on as they’d announced he would cover Saturday matinees. I thought he was excellent.
I then deliberately booked pre-Covid to see a Saturday evening when Sam Tutty would be expected to be on. When I got to the theatre, it had Marcus on the cast list screen above the box office, so I was initially disappointed. When this first song started, you can imagine my surprise on seeing Sam on stage. I think they must have just not updated the screen.
Sam gives a performance with a lot more ticks, movements and more obviously on the spectrum. At first it seemed far more exaggerated, but it was such a natural performance and more emotional to me. Fingers crossed you get to see him.
The cast is tiny - but on the cast list on the website, looks like two sets of understudies.

What performances does Marcus do each week (barring illness?)

I believe Marcus does matinees. I’ve seen every Evan on Broadway (and both Marcus & Sam on West End), and I have to say that besides Platt, Marcus Harman gave the best performance of the role I’ve seen. Tutty just leaves me wanting so much more, never been a fan of his portrayal. So if you can go to a matinee, you won’t be disappointed.

Marcus Harman! What an absolute star. Just thought I’d mention it…
Less enamoured with the show itself, but his voice and performance made the difference.

Touring from Autumn this year! Has this been announced? It’s just extended to October 22. Could it maybe be closing in October to go out on tour?
