If at any point she actually told the producers she couldn't do it, and wasn't allowed to leave (which of course we'll never actually know) then I take back everything I've said and would then genuinely feel bad for her, but if she went ahead knowingly, that's different. I don't think it's quite that easy. She'd have felt under pressure to keep going, and the more time that passed the more pressure there'd have been on her not to back out and make all that time a waste. When someone's put a load of responsibility on you it's difficult to say "I can't handle this", and once she started being sent out to publicise the show it would have been all but impossible for her to say "Actually, I'm not going to do it after all". It's easy to say "She shouldn't have done it" now, when everyone knows she's out of her depth, but what do you think the reception would have been had she pulled out a few days before the show opened with nobody knowing the reason or what she'd have been like? Everyone would have attacked her for being unprofessional in not sticking with it.

We can't be sure she didn't know the lines as this version is a re-write right? Maybe they are part of the new script. They did put out that it was a new version of Ghost with re-writes from the original screenwriter who wanted to improve sections. Although that could be a ploy from BKL to excuse a cheaper production?! I am facinated to go and watch though. Maybe that's what they are hoping? The intrigue / funny factor.

One or two complaining that they paid to see Sarah, not the understudy.
I wonder how long Sarah will sit it out.

Sarah Harding was on This Morning a couple of weeks ago (19th Aug), promoting the show. From what she said, she seemed to have only just met the rest of the cast, so it's been a very brief rehearsal period. I do not blame her for taking the role if it was offered, but if they were confident her name would be a box office draw think she could have benefitted from more extensive preparation and vocal coaching. Anyone could see it's not her style of singing at all. She was reminding people on Twitter that recording the show wasn't allowed, earlier. Key in itself. i noted that a couple of recent shows I have seen had 6 week rehearsal periods from twitter, new, trained, casts register arriving for rehearsals on some established shows a month before, and they had smaller roles, no illusions, or cop out sfor illusions. How long did this cast get ? If you have people without experience, surely you need extra time? And if they can't sing the score, and can't remember the lines, surely someone ought to cry fire before the show actually starts. Les Mis changed one lead in the 25th anniversary cast 4 days before the show if I recall . Having said that, if thye have diluted the music and the scriPt and the illusions, you can't just phone up a past understudy or lead and ask if they are free to do whats now a different show. .

While I do feel for her with the level of vitriol she is receiving, she has to take a fair share of the blame.
It is HER that is bad. Acting terribly and singing badly. Part of her responsibility after accepting the role was to learn her lines etc and if she didn't do that, it's deeply unprofessional. And an insult to audiences and her fellow cast members. Yes she should never have been cast- it's just another example of what a terrible producer Kenwright is- chasing an easy (or not) Buck instead of any artistic credibility.
She should have used her intelligence (I'm assuming she has some) and never taken the role. I love singing around my house to show tunes but at no point would I go an audition to be in a professional musical! If she doesn't know her own ability then she is even more daft than I thought. She's never had a very good voice so how on earth would this role be a good idea?!
The best thing she can do is lie low for a while and do I'm a Celebrity next year or something not requiring any talent.

If the rehearsal time for Ghost is as ridiculous as that for the Kenwright Blood Brothers tour I am not surprised the show isn't ready in any way.
The Blood Brothers cast is getting just 7 days of rehearsals before the first show in front of a paying audience. The show has been around forever so I wouldn't have expected months but they have a fair amount of people in the cast who have never done Blood Brothers so they are learning it from scratch.
Obviously lack of rehearsals doesn't excuse the fact Sarah Harding doesn't seem to be able to do the role any justice. But it's yet another factor of why the show is in this sad state.

I can't remember exactly who it was but one of the former Mrs J's was asked to come back with no rehearsal period and simply take it back over on opening night again (she then said no). By those standards, 7 days isn't bad.. Learning a show like that in 7 days is far from impossible (it's not very different to the rehearsal lengths a lot of non-professional companies have and they turn out fine), especially if they've had a decent go of the script in advance and they've got a decent resident director to get it into shape. Blood Brothers, to be honest, is one of the simplest musicals around in terms of staging.

Blood Brothers, to be honest, is one of the simplest musicals around in terms of staging. Of course it's not impossible but it is a very short rehearsal period for those in the cast who have never done the show. And those are trained musical theatre performers. They will manage but it is tough (I'm going by what I have been told by someone in the cast). And I imagine Ghost didn't have a long rehearsal period either and this is show is possibly more difficult to stage. Plus you have a leading lady who is simply not trained in this field of work which doesn't make it easier.

I feel very sorry for her, the producers should never have put her, and themselves, in this position.

Ultimately you cannot blame the producer, she would have put herself forward for the role on the proviso she could act and sing through her agent, who possible would have used the producers casting director, who should have done rigorous auditions, if the producer short circuited the process then yes they would be at fault.
Also plenty of actors couldn't sing, there was this famous singing coach, based near to Oxford Street, who would turn round celebrities such as Michael Crawford.

I do feel very sorry for Sarah. People were determined not to like he,r as soon as the casting was announced there was a huge backlash for her. That must've been horrible for her to read all over social media, when it was announced. Then making a stage debut is hard enough, but to do it with all this pressure to be good is even harder for her. Then she gets so much bad response for her performance, I'm not surprised she doesn't want to perform.
Anyway I remember these two auditions from this year, one from BGT and one from X-Factor so I am posting them here. Both performers sound amazing too. I certainly think that Rachael (BGT One) is great for Musical Theatre.

Actually, Rachael Wooding is a trained musical theatre performer who has played lead roles in the West End. Yeah I know, she said in her BGT audition and I had known her from being in WWYR at the Dominion. I'd like to see her do more MT shows, especially now she's been on BGT

I haven't seen her in a musical since Jersey Boys. Never watched her in WWRY. I do remember seeing her as Annette in Saturday Night Fever - now that was a while ago, 2004 I think. Would love to see her back in the West End.
