It sounded ok, but it was a nightmare to conduct, and when it went wrong.... it really went wrong! Pretty much a show stop.

Actually, this discussion of the orchestra for 'Les Mis' hardly belongs in the thread for 'An American in Paris' but I find it very interesting. So has the 'Sinfonia' now been totally replaced by other instruments, traditional ones or perhaps other keyboard synthesisers?

Julie Legrand takes over from Jane Asher on Monday, surprised it hasn't been announced anywhere. Maybe I missed it.

Eventually saw it last night and thought it was amazing! The ballet in the 2nd act went on a bit too long though...
I'm also slightly in love with Ashley Day.
We had Kristen McGarrity as Lise (who I believe is the 2nd Understudy) and Alyn Hawke as Henri and both were great also. Other than the 2nd act ballet, couldn't fault it. Albeit a bit predictable and clichéd.
I've never been in the Dominion before, but damn, it's a beautiful theatre.

Has anyone noticed how they've been sneakily changing the posters on the tube from Bobby Fairchild . . . to Ashley Day . . .

All those hours watching Allo Allo! box sets, while Gerald was upstairs doodling.

Enjoyed it a lot (more than on Broadway, though I now think it was due to the sh*tty seat I had there) and while I had gone just to see Ashley Day as Jerry, I loved virtually everyone on stage. I think the ballet isn't too long, I think it suffers from that weird lame modernist staging. So much nicer (albeit full of cliches) in the movie version.

There's a picture in today's Times of a 'pop-up' performance at St Pancras station to celebrate 200 performances in London.

If anyone wants to compare and contrast, and lives near a Picturehouse cinema (I don't), the original film is going to be shown on the big screen this Sunday, 17 September.

We saw it last Thursday and I'm sorry to say I was really disappointed. I know we were in the cheap seats in the circle, but I couldn't make out a lot of the dialogue and found the story quite hard to follow (even though I have seen the film, but many years ago). My husband, who is not English, really struggled. The ballet seemed to go on and on (and I like ballet, when I know that's what I'm going to see).

Saw this today. Got a cheap ticket in the back row of the stalls but huge chunks were unsold so everyone moved forward.
I enjoyed it. Beautiful dance routines. Loved the staging. Loved Ashley Day. Yes he is cheesy but it works. Loved Jack Wilcox on as Adam as I'm a fan of his anyway. Zoe Rainey was also superb.
I did enjoy it a lot but would I go back? Probably not. Did I go back to 42nd Street? Yes. Can two dance shows in big barns survive? I hope so but I'm not sure.

This show hasn't got much longer in it surely? Anyone I know who's seen it recently has commented on how empty it is. That theatre is very unforgiving

So I'm guessing if I wanted to see the matinee last minute, there would be enough tickets for decent seats the day of or the day before?

My boyfriend and I went to the theatre a couple of Saturdays ago, to enquire about Day Seats for the evening performance. We got stalls seats, row N, for £35 and it was a great view, so I would have thought you'd be fine ☺️ and I believe they weren't even day seats!

Saw this evening. Ashley Day and Haydn Oakley were both off but no announcements about understudies were made and I didn't see any signs in the foyer. Does anybody know who their understudies are? Thanks

The notice board for the cast each show is pretty large and is just to the right when you enter the foyer. I actually preferred Max to Ashley, I have to say.

Thank you stageyninja83 and lonlad. The foyer was quite busy when we got in and we didn't even noticed the board. I was looking for box office signs for understudies like the do in Les Mis. Will remember to check the board next time. It would have been nice to have an announcement before the show though.
Yes, I think they are the ones we saw last night. Max Westwell danced well but can't really handle the singing, got breathless quite easily and cut short a few notes. He probably needs to play the part a few more times to get there.
Overall we really enjoyed it again

I felt sorry for Max when I saw it again two Thursdays ago --- he dances it brilliantly and is easily the most virile of the three Jerrys I have seen but when he came out for his bow, he got NO notable increase in applause. In fact, the biggest round went to David Seadon-Young as Adam who is, admittedly, brilliant and gets better and better in the role.

There was no increase in the applause for Max Westwell on Tuesday either, but it is understandable. He really is a very good dancer but didn't handle the score very well. His voice has a nice tone but he didn't seem to be able to control his breathing properly while singing and dancing. He really needs to work on that as he has the potential to be a great Jerry. But Westwell is certainly not in the same league as Robert Fairchild who was absolutely perfect and made it all look so easy.
The big ovation on Tuesday was for Leanne Cope who was once again absolutely wonderful.
