In our little theatre bubble this appears to be a hit. Will the press and the woman on the Eccles omnibus like it?

I think a lot of it is because people were expecting a stinker but it’s turned out ok. I’m (musically) a child of all ages so am looking forward to seeing it. It isn’t remotely comparable to bat other than featuring the songs of one author as it’s ‘thing’ and starting in Manchester.

Bat Out of Hell isn't actually on Broadway and its limited run has had poor sales following the debacle of the failed US tour. Do you really wish that on this show?
And its title is the kind Katchurian in 'The Pillowman' would consider insane: nobody starts a title with a punctuation mark if they want the average punter to be able to pronounce it!

Thanks - not a Theatrecard member but got 2 £20 stalls seats (Row X) for Tuesday week. What’s the rake like in the stalls at the OH? |

Pretty decent, I don’t think you’ll have any problems unless you get a really tall person in front of you. You may not get the benefit of the projections from row X though, due to the circle overhang. The screens take up the top third of the set on all three sides. |

I wasn't familiar with all the songs in the show so when I got home last night I listened to the ones I didn't know (basically almost any from the last 5 years or so) and to be honest I found many of them unlistenable, mostly due to the overproduction and the whiney autotuned vocals. it made a lot of difference being in the theatre, being in the moment and hearing these songs sung by people who could actually sing. I wasn't interested in this show at all until this last week and was very happy that my instincts were proven wrong. My wife and I both compared it with other jukebox musicals including Bat Out Of Hell, the difference for me was that although Bat Out Of Hell had the better songs, it was (in my opinion) a completely unfocussed po-faced mess, even though there were many redeeming features. This show knows what it is and the irreverent vibe suits it so much better.

I saw this on Saturday and loved it. The plot's a bit thin, but they get away with that because all the actors and dancers look like they are having an absolute ball. It doesn't take itself too seriously and is very funny as well as having some amazing singers and dancers. Cassidy Jannsen has such a powerful voice for a tiny lady and Miriam Teak Leak (who I hadn't heard of before) really belts them out as a feisty Juliet. I had only vaguely heard of half the songs (Pink and Britney?), but it didn't matter at all as I don't know many songs when seeing new musicals.
The theatre was packed (2 for 1 anybody?) and the audience loved it. I looked at the next few weeks and absolutely loads of empty seats, which is such a shame. I hope it does well in London. it's a juke box musical yes, but very different from what you would normally expect from this genre.

Are the lead in's into the songs well done or is there just a line added to shoe horn a song in, like Mamma Mia? When I think of shoe horning in songs, nothing for me will ever beat in Tina when Tina literally shouts “what’s love got to do with it” to her future hubby (?) before launching into the song, and the whole theatre groaned! 😆 |

I wasn't interested in this but am now - and coincidentally I used to live in Eccles, though in the late 70's, not 90's, and I haven't kept up with pop music since about 1980. However, I daresay my taste in music at the time was equally mainstream (or s**t as some might have it), so I may well give this a go when it reaches London.
