it's a missed opportunity that they did it on such a quiet tram, avoiding rush-hour peak time for any viral exposure I'd guess Manchester commuters would do the same as London ones - be very angry their space (lack of) was being taken up by those who shouldn't be there, i.e. anyone not on their way to / from work. Also, "viral exposure" as in - "do we want our cast down with every bug spread in a crowded tram?" Can't even remember the last new British musical that launched into the West End.... Jamie? Couple years ago??! Jamie came in from Sheffield. "Only Fools and Horses" maybe fits as the most recent British not tried out anywhere else? Hmm I think on the whole Manchester commuters have a lot less of a chip on their shoulders than London commuters.

Ooooh, lets all hold hands, sing Kumbaya and only say nice things about new shows....
You just know someone is going to say something about not wanting actors out of work soon too....
How about we all wait until the finished product and THEN pass judgment? Just a thought. why haven't you suggested that to people who have only said nice, positive things before they see a finished product? My opinion is that what they have put out so far, looks terrible. sorry. Not Sorry. If we were only allowed an opinion after shows opened this forum would shut down.

Agreed I’m not enthusiastic about this at all, due to the content they’ve put out. I’ll still go and see it. Bear in mind this is a forum to discuss opinions, so a bit strange to tell people to hold them back when the show is releasing new material in the run up to opening - of course people are going to discuss it.

Hmm I think on the whole Manchester commuters have a lot less of a chip on their shoulders than London commuters. Interesting, in what way? Attitude. The whole 'do not look at anyone in the eye'-vibe on the tube. Etc. In my experience at least London commuters are alot more miserable and colder than those up north. That said, the clouds are descending in the second capital.

Try twice a day, five days a week in 50+ degree heat in the height of summer on the Central line or Northern line with your head up someone else's armpit and you'll soon understand why we are miserable. And that's assuming the damn thing is even working...

Why are you apologising and then retracting your apology? Anyway... my point is that some here are writing off a show already based ENTIRELY on the promo stuff. Whether what we’ve seen is crap or not, the show itself is still being moulded into a finished product. I still feel it’s an easy target. And by the way I have no interest in the show myself at present but I’m still keeping an open mind.

Also, and this goes for even the best musicals, for some reason (and I am nor sure what) - it seems very very hard to sell musicals in promo stuff out of context.
The recent BGT series for example where the segments from musicals were pretty dreadful - much better in context.
Even bits at the Oliviers which should be designed to show them off are often far from thrilling.
Anyway, probs for a separate thread as it's not specific to &Juliet - but promoting new musicals is very hard. Think the best stuff tends to be EPKs filmed of the actual show on stage once it's open. Though even then is not the same as being there in any way shape or form.
I don't have the answer to this problem!

If anyone is still looking to watch this in Manchester, ATG Cardholder offers currently available are a 2-4-1 (£20 each) or for the single patrons £19.50.

It's been 241 for Theatrecarders since it went on sale, frustratingly. I hate these sort of deals that exclude solo theatre goers. Atleast they've introduced the £19.50 a few weeks ago, albeit a few months too late imo.

We are already going against the grain of society by going alone (much less these days and never an issue in London though I still sometimes feel conspicuous in the regions!) and are excluded from half the offers! Could rant about this for ages. Starlight does a massive 4 month long friends and family offer. What about the singletons offer? (They do at least do a 48 hr half price sale for everyone twice a year though!)

^Often go and see stuff alone if friends or my wife and daughter are not interested in the show/concert or if they are seeing something else (eg fam were doing Six last week and I did Bridges at the Menier alone) and often get strange looks from couples/groups and even box office staff etc but what the hell,it’s their problem...refuse to miss out on something I want to see even if people think I am some kind of weirdo...the Arts should be inclusive of everybody, not some kind of cliquey rule-bound club!

241 deals and 'you are unable to leave a single seat' siutations really bug me too. I've seen 96 things so far this year - only 4 of them were with other people! I decided years ago that if I wanted to see something, I would. I dread to think of the awesome things I would've missed if I hadn't.

Often get strange looks from couples/groups This is my pet peeve! I get this often when I go to the theatre alone, but I love going on my own, I get so much more enjoyment out of it! I was recently at a lottery drawing for a show and when a single winner went up I heard a man (who never shut up the whole time!) say ‘why is she on her own, does she have no friends!?’ 🙄 I would rather be on my own then with someone who loves the sound of their own voice!

I've taken theatre trips to New York and Stuttgart alone, if I waited around for someone who wanted to do the exact same things I wanted to do I'd be waiting a lifetime

I love going to the theatre by myself- it means I get to see a wide range of things instead of negotiating with others about what we want to see. I also go to the theatre with friends having negotiated what we see 🙂

Are you guys just acting incredibly shifty and self-conscious when you go to the theatre alone or something? I rarely go with anyone, and the only strange looks I've ever had from other audience members have been when I've laughed at niche jokes or accidentally kicked them. It's like restaurants, just because you feel weird and as though you're sticking out like a big lonely sore thumb doesn't mean anyone else is actually paying you any attention. Just focus on enjoying the shows and stop worrying about what other people might be (but almost certainly aren't) thinking!

What @baemax said - I really do think you’re probably overthinking this, people very, very rarely give a monkeys whether you’re on your own or not.

I wasn't saying anything about getting strange looks, that's never happened to me. My gripe was about 241 deals and websites that don't let you leave single seats.

Oh I agree - I am VERY happy going on my own. In fact other than a few select partners, I prefer it. You can pick what to see, when to go, where to sit, how much to pay etc etc and don't have to worry about partner enjoying it (which is always a worry as I love most things!).
And I agree, never really had any looks and don't usually feel self conscious - I never do in London, but can happen in provinces.
I always get an aisle, and the amount of time in provinces I have gone to take my seat and have arrived to see something resembling a cloakroom..... "Oh we assumed that seat was spare as was a single one." Errrr, no; clearly impossible for you to fathom Mr/Mrs Province, but people do go to the theatre alone.
Another thing that drives me insane: "Are you on your own?" "Yes." "Ah, well would you mind moving to such and such a seat so we can sit how we want to - as we are a group so clearly far more impt etc etc." Then if I say No I always feel guilty. But I will have picked out a seat deliberately as it's where I'd like to sit. This assumption that you won't mind moving to suit others just cos you are on your own drives me mad!
And don't get me started again on the (lack of) offers/deals....
Ahhhh the trials and tribulations of the single theatre goer.
Though Baemax - I do agree with you - nobody cares you are on your own (they just sometimes decide to make demands of you)
