Hmm. Not sure the update is going to work, but I’ll still pop along. Ritchie’s not someone I would associate with Osborne’s work so hopefully I’ll be surprised

Hmm...I don't think the modernisation or the casting of Archie will work at all.

I saw the production a few years back with Branagh and even with him acting his socks off, the play seemed a very dated affair.

Yes, Branagh was totally miscast as well-tap dancing aside, he's a good actor and handsome man but he just lacked that old vaudeville charisma that he needed.
A shame because it was otherwise a well-cast production but it is a very stale story that is hard to get into.

Did anyone else think Branagh looked like Eddie Izzard in that production?

Did anyone else think Branagh looked like Eddie Izzard in that production? I recall some reviews mentioning that but i couldn't see it myself.

I saw the production with Peter Bowles, Frank Middlemass, and Sylvia Syms, at the Shaftesbury Theatre, a while back. I remember enjoying it. I'm waiting for a good revival of Inadmissible Evidence, one of Osborne's best plays.

No, I regret that I missed it. Of Osborne's plays, I've only seen Look Back in Anger (Branagh, Thompson); A Patriot for Me (Bates, Gough); and The Entertainer (Bowles). I did however produce a program on Osborne's work, featuring readings of scenes from many of his plays. Luther is another one I'd like to see a full production of. (Btw, I am fascinated and awed by the work of George Devine, and his connection with Osborne).

Bit off to call it a UK tour when its not actually touring the UK but is instead only touring England.

The updating seems like an odd idea as the original is so rooted in a particular time. Plus fairly pointless - 1982 is 37 years ago so its hardly going to make the play more resonant with a young audience anyway! Reminds me of the point Jan has made (I'm paraphrasing here) about creatives thinking "modern" means "when they were teenagers" (Sean O'Connor was 13 in 1982)

Though the 80's seem quite 'in' at the moment.

Heard Shane Ritchie being interviewed about this on the radio today. From his description the updating makes more sense than the initial publicity made it appear. In this version Archie is an old-school 70s style stand-up comic (of the Frank Carson or Ken "Settle Down Now!" Goodwin ilk), and the play is set at the point where the first wave of Alternative Comedians rose to fame and made his style obsolete. Which is a reasonable updating of Archie as a faded variety star in the 1950s.
The updates have been done with the co-operation of the Osborne estate (whoever that might be these days!). Not sure to what extent the text has changed but Ritchie mentioned he references Thatcher in the stand-up routines.
Highlight of the interview was Ritchie saying "Where I think I have an advantage over Laurence Olivier is .." although to be fair he was being self-deprecating as he meant he has experience of being a stand-up and dying on stage on a regular basis.

Just caught the interview with Shane on the One Show, the transposition to the early 80’s and the Falklands seems an interesting idea and if done well will have a greater relevance to my generation, children/teenagers of the Comic Strip, Not the Nine O’Clock News and Young Ones.... who could never relate to the 70’s working men’s club comics who were on the whole grotesque and lived in an alien world.
Not sure how good an actor Shane is but my interest is suitably piqued and will look to catch it at Richmond.

I've seen enough good reviews to book (only £12 at Richmond for front row dress); also, I've never seen a production before so have nothing to compare this with.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the play but cannot bear to pay anything to see its ‘star’.

The thing is I imagine his main fan base are not the sort to see this sort of play.
