who could never relate to the 70’s working men’s club comics who were on the whole grotesque and lived in an alien world. Those were the mainstream against which the "alternatives" competed late at night on TV. The best of those who came up the club route were amazing. The timing and control they had. Yes, some used material unacceptable now, but almost every one of them beats the useless jerks these days who think swearing - with a Tory politician's name after if "topical humour" is required, and bodily function noises are all that is required. And don't get me started on the generation before that who played the Halls and could sing, dance and entertain a family audience for hours. Agree. It is perfectly possible to like Max Miller, Ken Goodwin (“We’re having a good time aren’t we !!”) and Eddie Izzard simultaneously. Likewise to dislike Ted Ray, Bob Monkhouse and Ben Elton. The Entertainer - to be honest it’s not much of a play and it hasn’t stood up well.

Exactly what i thought when i saw the Branagh production few years back, everyone was acting their socks off but it was all a bit meh.

I thought the Old Vic production with Robert Lindsay was excellent.

I wanted to see this local to me in Bromley, but I am on holiday then.
So going to see this in Brighton on Saturday, after Macbeth in Chichester, so need to plan my trains, so would be great if someone could guide me on the running time please?

I saw this last night in Brighton after a Macbeth in Chichester, so after contending with two lots of railway engineering works and driving rain, I made it to Brighton, just about!
Firstly the show was poorly attended, about 100 people in all, for a Saturday night, with a relative famous show and a big name attached, I get no pleasure seeing this show so poorly attended.
Shane Richie though is unite a enjoyable actor and it is a role that fits in persona like a glove, like The Starry Messenger did with Matthew Broderick.Shane is a decent enough actor, but unfortunately has been straightjacketed by Eastenders, which seems not to have helped him. When I saw him in New Tricks on the BBC, I was surprised how well he could act. And my opinion has changed tonight.
The play itself as been moved from the Suez crisis to the Falklands War, so wondering if the jokes have been updated? If they have/or not they were quite funny.
4 Stars

Not really surprising, firstly it isnt that well known a play and Ritchie certainly isnt a big enough name
