Have to say that everytime I have seen the show on TV programmes I have been underwhelmed. It hasn't made me want to see the show at all. The only performance they ever seem to do on tv is Lady Marmalade so I suspect boredom has set in seeing that repeatedly? And then they go and do Bad Romance and Twitter slates it! I thinkninsaw them doing some can can thing as well that was very messy and last night on BGT some pop song that was possibly Lady Gaga but I had to leave the room as it sounded painful |

Bad Romance, particularly the start, sounded bad and off key. The solo vocals sounded pretty ropey, which surprised me. It sounded better when the rest of the cast joined in, but I wasn't keen on the speed (felt too fast and frenetic) and the way the songs were spliced together. The whole thing came across as a bit of a mess, and the way Christian and Satine suddenly wandered into the group of performers was a bit random. He looked confused, like he'd accidentally got lost on the way to the toilets and ended up onstage! |

I think I’d need to be drunk to see this.
Elephant love medley worked in the movie but turning every
number into a who’s that of pop with too many songs in the mash
up makes it frantic and doesn’t make the most of talents.

Whilst I respect your opinion robertb213 and like many of your posts, I don’t really agree with this one
I’d say that if you like the film then Moulin Rouge the musical delivers just about enough of what you will be expecting (unlike Pretty Woman the musical which is a complete letdown compared to the film). The way the theatre is dressed, it feels quite immersive, which I thought was a nice touch.
It’s more than hen night karaoke. If anyone sings or talks through a show I immediately tell them to put a sock in it (well a more polite version of that as we are at the theatre after all). The front of house staff at the Piccadilly theatre were very good at managing the few drunkard chavs that we’re ruining it for others the night I was there. Interesting fact - they said Monday is the worst night for bad audience behaviour - which seems weird but that’s what they said.
Yes MR is not perfect but you can see where your money has gone on the production and it’s simple escapism, which some of us need right now. The only thing they need to do is reduce the damn ticket prices so a more diverse audience can actually afford to go and see it!

Far too many extra songs crammed in unnecessarily. Just as you start to enjoy one song, it jumps to another one. I was so disappointed with the show. Definitely a case of style over substance. |

I was really dubious when it was announced about all the new songs and the way that they were cramming more songs in. That said as soon as it came out, the updated songs really uplifted it for me, most seemed to be for good reason and the ones I cared about being in there are still there. Elephant live medley actually brought tears to my eyes ! Didn't mind all of the megamixes and it's regularly on in my car.
We are finally seeing it in July after cancelled performances and the only concerns I now have are who's playing Satine and Christian and the audience members but I'm really looking forward to it !

Took a punt on this yesterday. I wish I’d saved my money. It looks amazing, Zoe Birkett’s Satine was well sung. Clive Carter looked like he was having a ball. But I just felt pummelled by it all rather than drawn in. For a supposed love story it had very little emotion. The lack of breathing space between songs and scenes tired me out. Luhrman did it perfectly on film. In the struggle to put it on stage I think they lost its heart. No mention of Christian, as he may as well not have been in it. 💧

It's a funny one this show.
I haven't seen it personally yet (I will get around to it at some point) but those I know who go to the theatre only very occasionally seem to have loved it and friends who are regular theatre goers generally less so.

With the train strikes happening tomorrow, I decided to come down to London a day early and with nothing pre-booked I had a wander down to the Piccadilly theatre to finally get to see this after my earlier booking last December was cancelled. The Piccadilly theatre is one of the WE theatres I’ve never been to so it was great to finally tick it off the list. With no discounts on offer despite the large number of unsold seats for the matinee show, I ended up with a central row K Royal Circle seat (£42.50) seat from the box office. A great seat but after todays viewing I’m glad I didn’t pay more.
The show offers a great visual treat with a nice theatre facade and a wonderfully designed auditorium along with great sets and lighting design, but there seems to have been no importance placed on the book by the producers. Now I love a good jukebox show but with MR for 2 hrs and 45 minutes you are battered by song after song after song with seemingly little break in between them to actually appreciate them before the next one starts which mentally I found tiring as it just doesn’t stop. Having a read of the programme’s 2 page music credits section pre-show, I really just thought that where too many songs included. You could of easily halved the song list without any issues.
The wafer thin book was a really big let down for me. Any romantic drama from the film has been completely lost on the stage version. As an audience member I just wasn’t invested in the romance between Satine and Christian as there just wasn’t anything believable in their relationship which didn’t help by the lack of any on stage chemistry between the two leads. This meant that when “Come What May” was done it really should of been a standout number but didn’t really land as powerfully as it should of. Give me a good light show and sets and sings but this shouldn’t be at the expense of the book.
Despite the flaws of MR, there where a few positives. Clive Cater was fabulous as Zidler and was the standout for me. A great role and one you could tell he relished when he was one stage. The opening numbers for both acts where top quality stuff. It’s just that everything else that followed each of the opening numbers didn’t reality hit the same heights. The ensemble need a mention here. A really great group of singers and dancers.
Walking out of the theatre at the end of the show I couldn’t decide how to rate this one. For the design aspects I’d give the show 5 stars because it does look and sound stunning and you can see your money on stage but I can’t get passed the lack of book and emotional punch. That part I could only give 3 stars in all honesty.
