A seriously misguided attempt to create another Matilda. Whilst Walliams’ books have some wit and a little warmth, they tend to veer too close to ‘Carry On’ to reach their conclusions, rather than Dahls sharp storytelling.

I really enjoy the story and message of the book but I really can’t stand Robbie Williams (or his music), so I think i’m just going to wait and see how the reviews are before booking.

I agree- like Walliams and his books, but they don't scream 'musical theatre' to me, neither, does Robbie Williams. But hey maybe I'm wrong (but I'll wait for others to fork out the money first)

Doran ain’t no Warchus when it comes to developing and delivering new musicals. Merry Wives: the Musical, anyone? Will of course reserve judgement, but the omens don’t look good.

Yeah I hadn't realised Greg was directing this. And I think I'd got it in my head from somewhere the music was being done by Joe Stilgoe. So I'm even less interested now in this than I was when they announced a Walliams 'book' was being adapted to stage...

It's a perfect storm - based on a (let's be generous) novel by someone I can't stand, with a score by someone I can't stand and a book by a playwright I think is seriously overrated. Hard pass.

I am prepared to wait until I hear some of the music before completely writing this off.
Doran has no real affinity to musical theatre as far as can be seen from his track record. He doesn't have a lot of experience of directing children.
Williams might be able to contribute some catchy music - or he might not. That is the real unknown - writing a musical is far more than just writing a couple of songs.
It might have been better to trial this away from the RSC somewhere quiet...

And a children's book that not many on here will have read. He seems remarkably prolific, are they really all his own work? I may go as im an RSC member so will get priority booking.

It's not a problem if people aren't already familiar with the book though, I've still never managed to plough through Les Miserables or Phantom Of The Opera and those shows seem to be doing okay.
I have read The Boy in the Dress though, and I do really like it. Walliams's books can be a bit hit and miss but this is definitely one of the good ones.

Joe Stilgoe did the music for the theatre version of The Midnight Gang (by Walliams) so that’s maybe where confusion and mind chaos crept in?

Personally, I reckon the only link to the theatre this show will have is that it's going to be on a stage.
If the score is anything but pop music, I'll be very shocked.

This has no appeal to me, but worth noting that the music and lyrics are co-written by Guy Chambers who did "The Selfish Giant" a couple of years ago so does have a musical theatre track record. No idea what the split of input between the two of them is.
David Walliams was "the biggest-selling author of 2017, overtaking JK Rowling with sales of more than £16 million from his children’s books."

A whole musical score made out of 4 chords might be impressive to be honest, lol. If it's four chords the whole way through and every song sounds different, creds to Robbie Lloyd Webber.
