Whattt... are you crazy!? The coat is sensational. Makes complete sense within the whole show, and in Real life twinkles like it’s made out of moondust.. Just caught the tail end of it. It looked like it was just Jac and the kids, singing ADWD. Jac sounded good, but it all seemed a bit 'by the numbers'. Jac can sing, but he doesn't stand out for me as a vocalist. Oh, and I still dislike the coat. Too much dark blue, and it looks cheap. Sorry, just don't like it. I prefer the previous (1991/2007) design. They had Jason Donovan's, Philip Schofield's and Jac's coats together on a previous This Morning ep (where Jason was being interviewed) and, IMO, JD's and Schofe's coats looked much better. I just rewatched the whole performance. Jac over emotes. |

OK, I've had two hours. I thought I'd compose my thoughts before posting.
Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot?!
I knew it would be different. I knew it was the Sheridan show. She was great and I assume only acting as directed so no blame on her but at least 2 jokes about selfies do not belong in Joseph. Does she get 4 salaries for playing 4 roles? It nearly worked but Jacob and Narator both sing in the same song! I think it would have worked better if it was using bits of real life as the set, so it was more obvious she was telling a story to real kids in the modern day, it mixed that aspect with big pieces of set too much. I don't think the 'found things' version would work at the scale of the palladium though.
Kids playing brothers and bakers etc... Just didn't work for me. Joseph is second youngest, he cannot have 4 children siblings.
A friend said it best to me, it's too amateur. The concept would be great for a mixed age amateur group. The teacher is the narrator and uses found things and the people around to tell the story, a bit like in man of la Mancha. I think it could work. But not at this scale.
The sold out audience loved it and the performances were great but it just didn't work for me.

Saw this last night and really loved it! I was expecting ridiculous fun and not much more and that's what it was. Particularly loved the sets, and thought Sheridan was charming, as was Jac. I don't know if having the kids mixed with adult characters worked, it was obviously just done for more laughs. I also wasn't keen on the random 90s outfits in Go Go Joseph at the end of act one. But apart from that, a thumbs up!

Boring seating question alert!!! I just booked a couple of end of row O (low end)seats and only checked the Monkey afterwards. Then I look and theres a pillar. It doesn’t look like it’s in the way per se but might it be a distraction? All advice greatly appreciated! 😊

Saw this tonight - never appreciated just how much the show needed a fresh look at it until this production. Breath of fresh air.
Considering the whole play revolves around the idea that the Narrator is telling the story to the gang of kids, utilising Sheridan's personality makes perfect sense. She has solid chemistry with the kids, who are all visibly having a great time. And, thinking about it, if we were to imagine how she would do Joseph this is exactly it.
I am not the type of theatre goer to usually enjoy any forth wall breaking, knowing winks etc, however given the story being told it worked rather well.

Very glad there's a production about with no ridiculous inflatable sheep, a full on Elvis impersonator or a chorus of very bored kids.
I don't think there's really any scope for this precise production to have a life beyond this summer, considering it is clearly built for a Narrator who can carry this style of production off. But they may do an Oliver on it and implant different personalities for different Narrators like we recently saw with Fagin.
Also, kudos for being, I suspect, the first production of Joseph to have a almost exactly 50:50 male:female split in the company. That's one advantage of having four of the kids be brothers!

I'd never seen Joseph before, always avoided any ALW, but I really enjoyed it. Even when I was a kid myself I thought the children's chorus was really cheesy, but they worked really well here. I'm not normally a huge fan of fourth wall breaking either but I think Sheridan Smith managed to pull it off. ("It's me!" made me laugh every time.) The only real problem I had with it was I couldn't understand half of what Jason Donovan was singing. Interesting to read the programme's claim that Joseph made him a huge star. I'd have thought that was more to do with the bizarre fact that the wedding episode of Neighbours had over 20 million viewers... |

Considering it's far less complicated than the pantomime sets they bring in (I assume roughly the same budget), all the talk of show stops really surprises me. No wonder the band/FoH team looked very unfussed by it last night! Yeah, I share the same thoughts as you about the children's choir. Usually it doesn't feel like it serves any purpose - here they all had meaningful stuff to do and were fully integrated into the production. I also entirely agree about Jason Donovan. His was the one sequence with diction issues. If I'm being kind, there might be some deliberate reason for this to a small extent. In reality, probably not.. |

I second (third, fourth...) the thing about how Jason's words were unintelligible. If I didn't know the song already I'd have no clue what he was saying. And it was such a contrast to the diction of the other actors!

Jason is terrible in this - although the last time I went he was SO bad but hamming it up off the scale and (I think) sending himself up so it was actually mildly entertaining.
When I saw Richard Carson do it was SO much better though.
Yes the set issues are odd. It really isn't that complicated a set so not sure why it doesn't work. The rising circular steps in the middle of the stage have not worked thrice when I have been and twice there was a prolonged interval because of it. You'd have thought with all the 100 quid seats they've sold they could mend these things lol.

I assume Sheridan still hasn't missed a performance and hope that she completes the whole schedule. Does she have any booked days off to anyone's knowledge ?
Having seen her in Joseph at the Palladium twice, much as I could happily attend every week, I decided I'd only go again to see someone else as the Narrator etc.

I think they are being maybe over cautious perhaps and stopping the show over safety grounds for the kids over anything else.... the kids are doing a lot of the set moves, and with holes in the stage etc, they can’t be too careful... the floor lift looks quite simple to us, but I’m not sure it actually is when you think about what it does... does a show stop really affect your enjoyment of a production that much? I quite like them 😂- and it’s hardly a long show, so you won’t miss your coach home 😋 I’ve seen it twice now, and Jason is much clearer now.. I guess the song starts quite low which doesn’t help. Jason is terrible in this - although the last time I went he was SO bad but hamming it up off the scale and (I think) sending himself up so it was actually mildly entertaining. When I saw Richard Carson do it was SO much better though. Yes the set issues are odd. It really isn't that complicated a set so not sure why it doesn't work. I deeply hope Sheridan won't be off as there will no doubt be national outcry. But I would LOVE to see the cover take on the role and would deffo try and snap up a ticket (if available) to see another Narrator. Anyway, she has no booked days off as far as I know. Wonder what they'll do re casting if the show returns either in the New Year or next Summer as rumoured.... Expect they could convince Jason to do it again but Sheridan is always so in demand with TV and other work. I am hoping for the return to the classic formula of a pop star Joseph and MT Narrator. |
