Well these reviews so far are all rather good. Waiting for The Times as they never like anything I do.
Edit. Well below me down with a feather. 4 stars from The Times. I'm in shock.

Reviews seem universally positive!
(In a rather odd move, The Guardian gave Joseph 4 stars while giving JCS only 3!).
How relevant reviews are in the age of the internet and social media a separate question of course, but certainly they all seemed to love it. Interesting that none of the flaws we have picked up on this thread have been picked up by them.
Anyway, would rather it transferred than came back next Summer, but after yesterday the latter does seem more likely.

Today was the 3rd time a queued for day seats without success. I was told this time that they won't be doing any more day seats. They don't need to as it's selling well

I think Laurence Connor pretty much forgets to direct everyone. That’ll be because he’s a rubbish director.. Why does he keep getting these gigs? I get that Cameron put him charge of those inferior restagings of Saigon, Miz, and Phantom so he could have creative control and not pay the sort of fees a top-rate director like Trevor Nunn, Hal Prince, or Nicholas Hytner would demand, but why use him for a new production like School of Rock? Or a big Palladium production like this one? Is it just that both ALW and Cameron are getting greedy in their own age and don't care any more about production quality? I'm genuinely baffled. Connor's Chess in particular was appalling.

I can't speak of the lauded 90's productions, but I think this Joseph is absolutely what people in 2019 think of Joseph; fluffy, fun, charming, harmless. And it was all that! Unfortunately I didn't get much of a character from him, why he was the favourite son I have no clue he was rather plain to me (thank goodness he has a winning smile and shows off his abs for 1/3 of the show.) His vocals sounded like every drama school top guy tenor and for me didn't really fit the score. They had an opportunity to Sutton Foster/ Charlie Stemp this new Joseph and I really do applaud the team for going with a brand new actor for this role and I do hope he has a nice career after this, but for me there will be no Olivier nods for him. Again, couldn't find any pictures of the 90's production but don't know how you could make the set more lavish... its Joseph..! I really liked it and I liked the sun in the back, and the lighting was great, I would be happy with a nom for that come Olivier time as it was something that I actually noticed positively. Fabulous review - thanks so much for posting! Re the first point above, I think that's where much of the love for the 90s production comes from. You are totally right that people absolutely think of Joseph as fluffy, fun, charming and harmless, and it has always been thus! But the 90s version proved that actually there is an amazing well constructed musical in there that can actually pack an emotional punch and doesn't need the panto elements - it was the first time it had been done in a non tongue in cheek way and it really worked. Full orchestra, full female ensemble, brilliantly choreographed dance numbers and visually stunning. This current production has returned to Joe Public's perception of the show and I think that's what many of us who liked the 90s version have misgivings about. Spot on re Jac IMHO - he's good, he's talented, he's safe. To me however as you say, he's generic and I don't see how he's any better than any other strong performer finishing drama school. And fair enough we know he can sing. Is he a triple threat with acting and dance too? We don't really know. And I really don't think he can (yet) be compared to Charlie Stemp. Time will tell! Re the 90s set, it's not so much that it was lavish (though in places it was). It's more that it was conceptually very clever and really fitted together well and flowed nicely. It was clean and classy and just framed the action beautifully. For me it was stunning in it's own right but did not distract from the action. Anyway, whilst still firmly Team 90s, I do agree with everything you say that this is a great fun, well done production to which I look fwd to (currently three) more trips!

Just did a random search on the official website and most dates are showing as limited availability so its sold really well. I'm planning a 2nd visit so will give the lottery a go. The last performance is showing as a matinee on Sunday 8th Sept rather than the Saturday night which seems a bit odd and the Saturday night is more sold than the sunday.

Thank you so much for this information! It's so nice to learn more about the history of productions, why they were well received, why they still stick in the minds of so many. RE Jac I think my wording was off, I guess I was assuming that since they took a chance on hiring someone that wasn't a name, that was very fresh, that he would be pulling out a Star Is Born type of performance where he steals every moment he's onstage, has charisma and stage presence that fully cements him despite the lack of material he has to work with. He is absolutely not doing a bad job, I guess my expectations were just higher. Fortunately al the critics seem to be enjoying him so what does it matter! It's so nice to be educated on things you didnt know about before (and wikipedia can so often be lack lustre on details of production to production) so thanks again, enjoy your other trips to the show!

No worries - I also love hearing from those that were there about productions from the past that I missed but am fascinated by! Yeah re Jac I do agree he's excellent and certainly very well suited to this role! And he's certainly easy on the eye ;-) I just think the whole "star is born" thing is slightly overstating it!

Can't imagine a Sunday matinee will have quite the same atmosphere but am umm-ing and ahh-ing whether to book for that too....

We booked 8th- by the time we had confirmation that Jason wa in it (just before the news went properly public as opposed to being talked about in here!) many of the front of stalls had gone anyway. We managed to get Row B for the 8th which we are very happy about!

I still cannot work up any interest in this. Especially at the prices. Babyface Joe, Panto Sheridan and JD. I will wait for Christmas if I want to see a panto.
Its just not Joseph. Its played for laughs and very young children. There really was a story of fratracide there and love for a parent. To play that for laughs I cannot see.

Carmella 1... you have nailed it...the source material deserves more than this clowning around...it is a Summer panto for all the family granted, but the 90’s version combined reverence with a sense of fun where appropriate...this is just plain non-stop daft.

Connor's Chess in particular was appalling. He's probably cheap and easier to control. To be fair, School of Rock was solid so perhaps he needs to do more new shows than just revivals.

Not sure about that...if he had been the original director of Phantom, the show would have closed a couple of years into the run. He gets away with the revivals because the shows are established, so I guess the audience doesn't care too much about the direction (though they should). A skilled director should be able to cover up a show's flaws; he simply exposes them and somehow makes everything worse.

Despite not having seen this production, and having no intention of seeing it, I managed to dream about it last night. I don't recall much about the dream except that Sheridan Smith & a bunch of kids came on stage & I prompetly walked out! I suspect I might feel like doing the same if I went to watch it, but fortunately in a dream you don't have to worry about wasting the cost of a ticket!

I've seen this twice already and could happily watch it over and over again just for the sheer exuberance of the piece but I must exercise budget restraint and self-control. However if there is an understudy narrator at any point I'll try be there though I hope it won't happen. I assume the intention is for Sheridan Smith to do the complete run but would be interesting to see how an understudy would fill the role
Very pleased that westendwilma is in a minority with the negative and potentially libellous review linked a few pages ago.
No show ever pleases everyone and the man next to me in the cheap seats on Wednesday afternoon told his wife at half time they'd ruined the show and Sheridan Smith was awful. Wife told him not be a misery and he looked towards me for support but I said I was on a return visit and loved the show. He didn't applaud once.

OK not to stir the pot - but just watched the WOS video. Is it me or is this the second time that Jason Donovan has publicly snubbed Joseph - Jac Yarrow - when talking about this production not even mentioning the kid?
BTW - is it definite to return next summer or is a transfer still a possibility?

Has anyone had any luck with dayseats for Friday evening shows? Want to take my mum next week and stupidly didn't check my email in time for the lottery confirmation email. If they can't guarantee any I'll just buy them but it's a bit more expensive
