What ARE people’s expectations of this? I suppose I’m expecting it not to be set in the period judging by the artwork but not having seen anything directed by him before what is Jamie Lloyd’s ‘shtick’? Are we going to be shocked? Outraged? (Doctor Faustus caused some concerns at the time I recall).... what does everyone think? I hope itll be good, though I'm less keen on this show than JCS. I find the second half drags a little. I've always found it the other way round, act one takes ages to get going then some of the best bits in act 2 |

(Doctor Faustus caused some concerns at the time I recall).... what does everyone think? The excitement for me is that I don't really know what to expect! I've seen two Jamie Lloyd productions before (both plays though) and they've been brilliant but also subverted what you'd usually expect from the material in some way. I'm hoping he'll do the same with Evita and give us something akin to the Regent's Park JCS that revitalises the energy of a show that has endless revivals that aren't particularly imaginative (*cough* Kenwright *cough*). |

Well, this was absolutely bonkers, a complete and utter mess. I found it entertaining and amusing in parts but overall I was disappointed. It was a first preview full of family and friends of the cast cheering, but there were also a few patrons who didn't comeback for Act II, including three people seating in front of us.
The main problem for me is that this production takes for granted that the public knows the story and understands the politics of Argentina in the 1940s/50s. The set is minimalist and it doesn't work at all, just a few steps for the cast to go up and down sometimes for no reason whatsoever. It reminded me of the terrible production of Carmen at the ROH earlier in the year.
Some Spoilers to follow.
The band was at the top and sounded good. Samantha Pauly struggled with the score quite a bit, she was painfully screechy at times during Act I, but amazingly she sounded good in A New Argentina. She sounded better in Act II although a bit pitchy sometimes. In Act I she wore most of the time a white dress and trainers, that was changed for golden shorts and matching bikini top for the scene where she meets Peron, all very strange. In Act II she sang Don't Cry For Me Argentina in a white bikini top with the lower part of the dress made of white and blue balloons, then back to the white dress and trainers for Rainbow High, during which she gets sprayed with cans of paint in different colours while she sings 'Lauren Bacall Me,' 'Christian Dior Me' and so on. Just when you think that it can't get any more bonkers the little girl appears and sings Santa Evita dressed up in the Evita trademark white dress with blond wig and full jewellery. All very bizarre but somehow amusing.
Te rest of the cast did a decent enough job, but Adam Pearce is miscast as Magaldi, his voice would be more suitable for Peron.
The choreography is more miss than hit, nothing terribly original, a bit meh. Very good dancers in the ensemble though.
Some of the staging was entertaining but by the end I was sick of balloons, confetti and smoke. Yes, we get it, 'Oh What a Circus, Oh What a Show', you don't need to overdo it.
Just my two cents.

Interesting about the minimalist set. How does it compare to the other Lloyd Webber/Rice musical revivals this year? I suppose it’s a first preview but would’ve expected something more elaborate. I watched the compilation of clips with Sam Pauly as Evita from Westport and thought she was brilliant but maybe first night nerves? Meanwhile... and the money kept rollin in for Lord Andrew and Sir Tim |

God that sounds awful and very unsubtle. I was hoping this might be an updated production with better production design and some more interesting choreography than the recent tour since although I enjoyed that it was mostly thanks to the music as the staging seemed quite cheap. This sounds like the complete opposite of what I had hoped for and like they were trying to be edgy with no purpose behind any of the choices. Disappointing but at least this is another thing I won't have to squeeze in before I go back to uni.

Yeah after the Elena Rogers debacle, I was hoping for a more "epic" Evita that blew people's minds the way JCS did...
