Agreed - the BK one is the only production of Evita I've seen. It was lost in the Dominion, but in a medium-size house on tour, it was really rather good (Marti Pellow aside). It's a musical I've always loved, and I had tickets for the cancelled Barbican OAT transfer, and I'm now genuinely excited for a new revival of it. The same production also play the smaller Phoenix Theatre. Thank you - I saw this at the Phoenix and was wondering if it was the BK production others have referred to. With Emma Hatton as Evita and a very handsome man (definitely not Marti Pellow!) as Che. It was the only time I’ve seen Evita on stage, having watched the film countless times. Thought it was pretty good, and in a venue that size the set and production didn’t feel particularly basic or cheap. |

The apparent reason she turned it down was because she didn't want the press attention and she didn't like Eva Peron as a person after finishing the concept album and couldn't bear playing her night after night, and would understand if she didn't want to deal with the score. There's a funny story in Tim Rice's biography where he took her out to dinner to try and convince her to avoid spending the money on a search and got through the entire night without talking about it until the end where he asks and she just says "No." She seems like a very private person. Another rumour was that she didn't agree with Hal Prince's politics. That wasn't true either. Covington, 42, suffered a stress fracture, the show’s producers said Sunday without being more specific. Covington, who recorded the original “Evita” album 13 years ago, arrived in Sydney, Australia, in a blaze of publicity. However, the Australian media of late has been carrying reports of friction with producer Thomas Guerra. Stephanie Lawrence, who played Eva Peron for three years on the London stage, will take Covington’s place in the show, which is scheduled to open July 18." |

I would say the same thing about the curve production (I feel like the only person here who liked it) it’s the first version i saw live and made me fall in love with a great score Not just you - I loved the Curve production. Went 4 times! Oh no, really?! I despised it! And I'm all for reimagined shows, but this weren't IT! |

Not just you - I loved the Curve production. Went 4 times! Oh no, really?! I despised it! And I'm all for reimagined shows, but this weren't IT! Ha - yes indeed! A lot of my like for it was due to reasons idiosyncratic to me (and I did understand where a lot of the criticism came from) but yes for me it worked. Clearly not the best production of Evita I've seen, but far from the worst. |

I assume Eva and/or Che will be a name in order to fill the Palladium for 8-10 weeks. It's rare for Jamie Lloyd to revisit his work but his production of Evita deserves to have a further run.

Well, I thought I had had my fill of EVITA after the recent Drury Lane Concert and Curve productions. However, it looks like I will be booking for this Jamie Lloyd version. I was really sorry to have missed it at Regent's Park, and had booked for the Barbican run that was obviously cancelled because of Covid. Really excited to see what he brings to this piece.

Maybe he has convinced regular star choice James McAvoy to play Che. James could probably vocally handle Che, considering others who have played him before.
It's going to need some big names to fill the Palladium.

Between Lloyd doing this, Much Ado and Waiting for Godot next year I wonder if the NT Ragtime is just a rumour. Would be difficult to fit in for next year unless it is maybe the NT Christmas show next year.

My 'it'll never happen for multiple reasons' casting for Eva is Florence Pugh but I suspect her score is a bit too demanding for her voice and probably not a show she should make her stage debut with.

Jamie has also made part of his brand attracting big names, so with that and the Palladium (if true) I assume there is at least one big A or solid B list name.
