Wow, bet you're fun at long-winded parties. I thought this was an opinion board?

Ok so I've just been to the matinee - last time I went Marsha Songcome was covering and I thought she was amazing.
I agree with everyone here who found Sam Pauly's Evita shrill and shouty, my ears were practically bleeding!
However, at the end of the interval, it was announced that Samantha Pauly was indisposed and Marsha would be playing Evita for the rest of the show. I was practically delirious with joy!😂

Just to clarify, I'm NOT happy that Sam Pauly is unwell!😂 It was just such a treat seeing Marsha again😊

Interesting - I'll be at the last show tonight so will be intriguing to see if Pauly has called out completely or if she just feels a little under and wanted to rest so she could do all of tonight's show.

She posted on her Instagram that she’s had a cold which has developed into a cough so she’s struggling, and called out of the matinee so that she could try and do tonight’s show.

Well, I don't want to be mean but she is certainly struggling tonight, having to stop mid-song and cough, losing a couple of bars of lyrics in the process.

Samantha started the show but she was obviously struggling with her voice - she was quite shaky on notes that had been effortless for her the last time I saw the show, she was cracking, and she had a coughing fit just before Buenos Aires (as ceebee mentions above). It was clear that she was not comfortable. It must've been a very difficult decision given it was the last show, but at the end of the interval we were told by stage management that Marsha would be taking over for Act Two... ... and she was incredible! I had no idea her voice was so versatile - her belt is perhaps less powerful than Pauly's but her voice is much cleaner and felt better controlled, her control of her head voice in particular was impeccable and some of the lighter sections of music had a very sweet quality to them which made the latter scenes of the show even more emotional. Bravo to both women for excellent performances. Samantha joined Marsha for the bows so at least she got to see the show out of the park.

My second visit this evening. Sorry to see Samantha struggle in the first act but she valiantly made it through to the interval. Marsha, well, wow! She knocked it out the park. I’ve seen numerous actresses in this role, going back to Elaine Paige, and Marsha had me transfixed. Honoured to have seen her. And get well soon Samantha. (And i’m still torn by this production).

I feel sorry for Samantha, both for being ill in the first place, and for being ill under those circumstances; but I just think Marsha is so much better in the role!

Just back from this evenings performance.
I can understand the criticism placed on the show but personally I really enjoyed it. Thought the staging was exciting and kept me engaged.
It was clearly early on Samantha was struggling and for every gorgeous clear and perfectly placed note came a lot of not pleasant singing. It’s also hard when you know how truly hard the score is to sing and know what songs are coming up. Felt like every note you were willing for her to get.
The interval swap was understandable and Marsha (sorry if I’ve got names wrong) was glorious. Her voice was beautiful and she really got to the heart of the character. Nice to see both girls take the bow at the end.
I also really loved that when the switch was announced the audience cheered in support and did the same on the new Eva’s entrance.
I still feel it’s such a gorgeous score with some real moments of emotion. I’m glad I saw this incarnation (the last with Elena was so different)

I echo all the other comments. I was fortunate to see Samantha's performance another time and thought she was excellent. I was very happy to see the understudy (Marsha). She was truly great.
I'm torn by this show. Some bits are brilliant, but other bits less so. I'm glad to have seen it twice but wouldn't be disappointed if it didn't transfer or get revived next year. It doesn't have the same love and energy as JCS had.

Back to topic, for the last shows the Open Air FB post signed off with #WhereDoWeGoFromHere! Call me positive but I’m taking that to mean there is an ongoing life for this production! They've posted again today with #goodnightandthankyou which seems a bit more final sadly

There's nothing scheduled for The Barbican next summer. I just wonder, given the JCS transfer, was a success... Or do we think that's it?

Can anyone remember how far in advance JCS Barbican was announced?

Samantha Pauly is doing SIX on Broadway though so they'd have to get a new Eva anyway...

I found the Barbican's original announcement of Jesus Christ Superstar transferring - it was announced 7th November 2018.
... and three days earlier, the Open Air Theatre tweeted this ...
So ... looks hopeful!
